From: Tegg Bode Ah these forums are fine as is, you want to see real anarchy visit some newsgroups where there is no moderation at all aver. The ones I was in a long time ago eventually got overwhelmed by spammers and now they're just deserted wastelands. :/

It's why I stopped visiting here regularly. In fact, I clicked this bookmark by mistake, and noticed the thread before I closed the window.
I created a thread about forum police, and got attacked by ... the forum police. At that point, I said to myself, f@ck it.

I believe this poll is skewed towards one answer being right. The answers range from 1. I am a coward. 2. I am a strong person. 3. I am unassertive. 4. I am frivolous. The poll addresses one particular type of person who tries to police the forums by being pushy and pompous while at the same time silently includes any and all other forms of self-policing. A 'self appointed forum police' can refer to an abusive moderator person and also to a kind and tactful moderator. Perhaps if the poll were worded in a manner giving equal respect to any stand for or against policing we would see a much truer answer as to the feelings of forum users on this subject.

Self Appointed Forum Police like statements are useful if post is incredibly annoying but either way any other time I have no problem with topic overlapping outside of their assigned spots or whatever else. The opinion pieces that go on for page after page in resident answers sometimes are very annoying but everyone and their Mother, Brother and Hippo seems to participate. Either way we really are responsible for what we choose to read or not. We are Adults aren't we?

Perhaps if the poll were worded in a manner giving equal respect to any stand for or against policing we would see a much truer answer as to the feelings of forum users on this subject. Bree - when I wrote this it was not really any kind of question even if worded as a poll. I was annoyed at the constant "don't post this here, post it there" posts mostly because they weren't, "hey you know, you proly will get a better response..." no- it has been more in the tone of, "You really bother me posting this here- go away!" So- yes it was skewed - by my feelings "of mind your own business, if you don't like it, don't read it." i really never took any of these potentially helpful pointings to the right forum as helpful- just self-righteous and vaguely pompous - if that's not how they were intended then I apologize to the posters of said answers but frankly that's what it sounded like. So maybe it says something about me as was suggested above - that the tone one reads it in is more telling than the post but it seems i am in wide company. When there is actual Moderation - and believe me, I do know what I am talking about - I have been Forum Admin on one board for te past three years and on another for about a year - you Moderate with a soft touch - you want to instruct not insult even by omission. So while it is true that the poll is completely unscientific, it gave me the forum, if you will pardon, to discuss it and see how others here felt. And the frivolous Pie portion is sort of a Forum Requisite- just a little escapegoat answer and had no relevance whatsoever. I have a huge frivolity streak

Haven't read all of the posts in this thread so sorry if parts of my response have already been covered. I did want to present a different take on the matter thou. Just scrolled through the last 200 posts the the OP has made. Every single one has been in Resident Answers. Nothing wrong with posting in Resident Answers and people are helped here too. But if you spend a good deal of time in any of the Content Creation forums then you will see a solid core of individuals that constantly watch and wait for a chance to give guidance to people learning new skills. We do point people to the right forum to post thier question in so they can be helped by the most knowledgeable people. The only time I have seen responses which could be percieved as "short" or "Hey go away" is when we get person after person coming on and asking "Would you give me this for free", "I don't want to work for it and learn and I don't want to pay for it". But even then it is a two way street. More times then not if someone comes on and asks nicely, "Hey I am having a party, my skills are seriously lacking but I would love to be able to have such and such", someone will fix them up. Tones of voice, facial expressions and body language in general are all lacking in a forum. All we have is our eyes to go by and "tone" can be misinterpreted at times. I would imagine that we have all misinterpreted intent at times. That being said, a post briefly stating "I want" is more then likely to be met with a "I won't" or a gruff "Post in the right forum".

I''m sorry but no - you are wrong. Although I definitely hang out in RA, I have posted in other Fora. See me in Texturing where I just recently posted a "here, look this way" regarding Gimp tuts. Besides - that's not the point. You are reinforcing my point here since the original prosit was that people come here mostly and do not really need one to tell them go here, go there.

You are reinforcing my point here since the original prosit was that people come here mostly and do not really need one to tell them go here, go there. Nope not wrong. Look again, I said I looked throough your last 200 posts, I didn't look past that point. Take a look for yourself, 200 for 200 in RA. I have absolutely no idea how you could possibly see any reinforcement to your point. We have cycles where there are several posts at a time of people coming and looking for freebies or paid help instead of posting to the Employment Ops or Products Wanted forums. People come and post to RA with questions regarding textures, animations, scripts, building, when it would be better to post to the correct forum. As posited many times here. RA has a core group, but so do each one of the sub forums here. A lot of regular users constantly watch thier pet forum but infrequently scan the other forums.

Exactly.... if you don't get to the other fora as much then you may miss the content- if it gets posted here you have a better chance of finding a quick answer. And yes, you are right - my mistake, you did say last 200 - Also, the point of it all was not so much if people should go elsewhere for pertinent answers, it was more about the people pointing out the error of their questions and how you - the reader- takes these suggestions. But oh well.. never mind Have a great day.
