I too like to take water trips from time to time, although I prefer power boats. I have gotten used to the "dip" when crossing sim borders but the majority of my extended trips have all ended the same way-- ban lines. They are the worst navigational hazards, they eat boats. And when combined with a sim border cause a full blown crash and restart.

What a great trip, Mari! Thanks for reminding us of the joy that we can find by just relaxing and playing in SL instead of getting all uptight over the problems. I'm itching for a biplane flight, and I've wanted a sailboat for a while. I think I might go boat shopping tonight after a little flight around the Linden water off the Hangout. I can't match your record, though. I always crash into something. I almost never land on purpose. It's part of the fun.

The free one's price is right, but the upgraded one is still cheap, an customizable (lots of people sell texture sets, even). Plenty of other options out there, too, including some big, ol ships that would look quite impressive on the SL waterways. Mari _____________________

I used to travel around Nuttall on the Linden canals now & then. I definately managed all the way to Elibia in one go a few times... six or so sims of twisty waterways. Across to the other continent via ANWR a few times too, I think. I wasn't sailing with the wind, I have a boat that looks like it sails but just goes where you point it

My one and so far only sailing excursion in SL bore an eerie resemblance to one of my early RL sailing trips. My SL friend, a new sailor, beached the craft for me to enter, but as I endeavored to click on the appropriate pose, the wind caught the sail, and off he went… his cries of “Run, Maitri, run!” echoing on the wind, as he and the craft disappeared into the distance.
In RL, my husband at the time, also a new sailor, launched our 15 ft craft from a public launch in one of the inland waterways leading to the ocean. Together, we pushed the little boat out until he deemed it safe to enter without scratching the hull on the concrete launch. Of course, by then, at 5’3”, I was up to my neck in the February chill of the ocean, and couldn’t get in the freakin boat if my life depended on it. My hubbie had an easier time, with his 6’4” build, and quickly leapt into the craft, inadvertently letting go of the main sheet as he turned to help me. The wind caught the sail, and unguided by human hands, sped across the bay, with me clinging to the stern for all I was worth. Suffice it to say, I was eventually hauled by the seat of my jeans into the boat, and after further adventures, our cruise ended when, a remarkably short time after our ignominious departure from the very well-populated launch, we were towed back by the harbor patrol, sails down and billowing inside the tiny craft. Believe it or not, after this experience and a few others, we sailed for several years and both grew to love the sport. I still laugh out loud remembering this experience… /me smiles anticipating fun times sailing in SL. _____________________

Are you sure you're old enough to be piloting a boat all by yourself?

When I was a baby avatar my friend who is not on much gave me ride over several sims on her magic carpet but it was very difficult passage.
I loved riding on her penguin and following her the best even though it looked bit strange. _____________________

I think my best sailing expedition was when I took my Tako out from my home sim of Firespire and attempted to circumnavigate the island sub-continent (what do you call those big islands that consitute the continent of Nautilus anyway?) on which I live. I was very-nearly-successful, too. There were only two spots where I had to "get out and push" (ie drag the boat across a difficult spot in Edit Mode) - and they were on corners of sims where scripts were disabled *and* land reached very close to the edge. Oh, and one or two unfortunate experiences with banlines and boat-dumpage, where I re-rezzed the boat past the banned spot but as close to the spot where I'd lost it as I could.
The trip took two hours or so, and was a lot of fun. Not only did I see a lot of interesting scenery and builds that I wouldn't have seen otherwise, but I learned a lot about how to sail a boat reasonably effectively in no-script territory (which mostly seems to involve setting the sail at about 45 degrees and hoping like mad that you'll be back in scripts-enabled land again before you encounter a waterway that requires you to face too close to the wind). I also got a lot of practise at being patient with moving at *very* slow speeds, again because of the prevalence of no-script areas (particularly around the southern end of the sub-continent). Another memorable expedition of mine was a long time ago, back in my newbie days when I spent most of my time exploring SL and seeing the sights. I discovered the road network on the Old Continent, and starting hiking along it from Abbott's Aerodrome to see where it took me. I spent hours just wandering along seeing what was there, and having a look at interesting builds along the way. I did some of the trip in a quadrupedal horse avatar, and when some wag took potshots at me with a watermelon cannon I derived great amusement from attempting to eat the watermelons. I also tried driving along some stretches of the roadway in my Damani Roadster, which was fun but challenging. Sim crossings were problematic in the Roadster - I think I crashed into the Great Wall a couple of times, getting stuck inside it more than once. And again with the banline problem - if they run right up to the roadway (which is pretty common) it is *very* hard to avoid unfortunate Car-Meet-Banline experiences on a regular basis, which is why I gave up and went back to walking not long after. I'm not sure how far I went, since the roads loop around and connect up with each other, but it felt like a good couple of days' hiking, if I add up all the individual sessions I spent on that trip. _____________________

Cool story Nimbus!
The Kid Scout troop recently did a hike in that area, going from Rodeo to Abbots, mainly along the coast. That's a really pretty area, an Salazar Jack should be proud of the forest. ![]() Good grief! Do your parents read the forums?!?! ![]() My daddy does. I believe I've told him about dat before, too. If not, well, I guess he knows now! Mari _____________________

I've done several cross country trips before. A long time ago I flew from ahern to kuula in my modified freebie hovercraft because teleporting was down. I had often just tp'd over to nci all the time but flying there really put the location in perspective. I've also tried crossing between water bodies using the water channels. The first time I tried was in a jetski which I actually had to drag across short distances of land using edit mode in order to reach the next canal. I ended that trip by building ramps in this linden water sim which strangely had object rezzing enabled. I recently made a canal trip with my new beach-cat. I'm not sure that I can do it in a big boat.

What an excellent adventure Marianne, for me sailing is one of the most pleasurable experiences in SL. In RL we jump into our cars and miss so much we might have seen had we walked. In Second Life we teleport everywhere and miss out on so much also.
About six months ago I set forth from the Forum Hangout in Allana and after about half a dozen attempts successfully circum-navigated Corsica (tricky as Corsica was not, and has yet to be surrounded by water - consequently the journey necessitated a short hop in a helicopter). During the journey I saw so many amazing things that it reminded me just what an incredible place Second Life is. I decided at that moment that I would endevour to acquire waterside property on every continent in Second Life, allowing me (and others) to sail in the waters everwhere in Second Life - I'm working on that. I have this vision that one day all the continents will be joined by corridors (some already are) allowing anyone to sail/fly/drive/walk from one continent to the next. Some day some one will post a thread telling of their experiences while circum-navigating the whole of Second Life. Great thread Marianne... ![]() thanks..Perre Anatine |

I've done a circumnavigation of the central land mass in Corsica.
It's water all the way, apart from one sim in the South where an idiot had beuilt a footbridge over the Linden canal. Only Edit gets you past if your boat has a mast. As others have said, it's a wonderful way to see a huge variety of builds. |

I rode my pony half way across Heterocea and round and back again in a big circular route - didn't count the sim crossings, but there were lots. It's a really good way to see the metaverse.

It's not a walking or riding trip in any way. But I was on a shopping binge last night. (^_^)
First, 4:30pm ... I reviewed all the freebie mall LMs I keep in my "Noobie Help Freebie Places" folder.... One of them turned into an S&M mall with dance pole camping spots... (T_T) ... *delete!* ... One of the places was loaded.... 83 people... (O_O) ... Had a friend mapstalk me and we chatted for a while then went along our merry way... No lag ... \(^_^)/ After that, I TPed to a few of the welcome areas. Hung out with the comedians and griefers for a while... One place was particle spammed... Still no lag. \(^_^)/ Then I hung around NCI and watched the award hand-outs for the noobie Show & Tell... I MISSED IT AGAIN!!!! (>_< Unpacked some of the things I bought out in the sandbox... Met a friend who knew about a store that was closing and cut their prices... MORE SHOPPING!!!! \(^_^)/... Still no lag... \(^_^)/Then I went to my favorite abandoned mall to try on some of the clothing... including some freebies I picked up on the way... (=_=) ... Separated most of the outfits into my jeans, shirts, socks,..... folders, probably to never be combined again. (<_< ... Still no lag... \(^_^)/Then back to NCI to show off my new jacket with the floor-length flexi-bustle... Someone pointed out that one of my clickables was visible in the transparency glitch... Nuthin' I can do about that. By then it was 10:30pm ... The RL meatsack was getting tired so it was time to log off. \(=_=)/ I'm sure that is somewhere around 20 or more teleports. Notice.... not once did I say relog. (o.o) It was just one epic stable day yesterday. And the funniest part is, I turned on 'Run Multiple Threads' this week and had it on the whole time. I'm still on Ultra, I still have Impostors turned off, and I'm still LOVING every second I spend in SL. !kiss Linden Labs. (^+^) _____________________

Last night was great, my partner and I were trying out demo horses and found this road, I can't remember the correct name of the Sim but it was Belleg... something. We rode for a long time, very peaceful. It was on protected land and there were rental lots and areas with protected beaches....riding horses on the beach was a wonderful way to spend time together.

Went to one of the big carmakers' sims.... I think it was Pontiac, with my sweetheart. That or Nissan. I was driving, and this girl just sat on top of the car! We took off driving and told her to hold on. lol. Pictures are funny.

Because of this thread, I dug out a folder full of freebie boats I got as a newb and never opened, then spent a while last night rezzing them at the hangout and sailing around the Linden water there. I wish some more people had been there last night; it was a blast! Turns out I actually already owned a handful of sailboats, a couple yachts and an inflatable boat or two. Sailing around by moonlight is great fun, and if you hug the coast, there are some interesting builds to look at.
