I think you can be fairly accurate in pinpointing someone's age just by the music they consider "the best ever". It's not always true, I know...my husband for example likes music from just about every era, so he could be hard to judge age-wise unless you knew him. But once you know him, he too will tell you that the 80's had great music. I met someone once on SL and later found out his RL age, which I had already guessed when he told me that his favorite group was The Beatles and that he never really got into Elvis as much. Kind of gave away his age at that point. I have found that a lot of people in SL tend to fall into the early 30's to early 40s age group and most of us grew up in the 80's, hence it's very popular in SL.

I am also a huge 60's fan, I adore the Beatles, but you are also just as likely to catch me listeng to Frank Zappa, Gustav Mahler, or Duke Ellington. _____________________

Ducky was a character from 16 Candles....an 80s movie.. He dressed mainly from the 50's, rockabilly style with touches of the 30's. and by suits i should have said he would borrow pieces from them, jacket, tie, vest, pants.... sometimes he wore the whole suit. and noooooo unless they were those baggy surfer type shorts, i liked those ! but lord,if You meant speedos...X( --------------------------------------------------- Ducky was in Pretty In Pink, but it's easy to get them mixed up. Both had Molly Ringwald. Another great thing the 80's bought us......the Brat Pack....Demi Moore, Molly Ringwald, Robert Downey, Jr, James Spader, Andrew McCarthey. It was a fun time period...the movies were fun, the styles were fun, and most of all, the music was fun, full of one-hit wonders as well as timeless favorties such as Duran Duran, Def Leppard, Bryan Adams. Hearing those songs can still bring back where I was, what I was doing and who I was with "back in those days". thank you! i was wondering if i got the movie reference right! lol and yes i still have that soundtrack somewhere. i was more into 80's "glam bands"... Poison, Cinderella, Ratt...but yes has listen to and still enjoy Duran Duran!! ahh if only i could go back to the future....._____________________
There's, uh, probably a lot of things you didn't know about lindens. Another, another interesting, uh, lindenism, uh, there are only three jobs available to a linden. The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps. You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

Me, well, I'm a bit timeless, more hippie bohemian, a style that could be anything from 1960's to 2007 and beyond!!!! Hippie bohemian, unless you are an actual hippie in Bohemia, is definitely a 1960s thing, and only if you were stoned out of your gourd. To have a hippie bohemian style now would be like wearing a zoot suit (1920s style) in the 1960s. I've seen the Dick Van Dyke show (early 1960s) and the Mary Tyler Moore show (very 1970s), I have to say that y'all had to be stoned out of your gourd to wear those 1970s fashions as seen on MTM. Mile wide coat collars. Shirt collars over the jacket collar. Church bell shaped pant legs. Helmet hair. Oh god, what a mess! Now, the suits and dresses on the DVD, while conservative, would still work today. Laura Petrie's skirts would still be just as tight, but the hemline would likely be higher. And her capris trousers would still be stylish today. All that comes to mind about 1980s fashion are shiny skinny ties, pastel colored linen sportcoats, Members Only jackets, and football linebacker shoulderpads on women. As for the music, I don't know if you've heard but... DISCO SUCKS. ![]() |

I used to run a chat room in IRC and we didn't allow underage people because it had an adult theme. One of the questions we asked if the person was suspect was.. "what was the first album you bought with your own money?" So much more effective and revealing than asking for their pre-learned false date of birth... imogen by the way, mine was "Yellow Brick Road" by Elton John _____________________

One of the questions we asked if the person was suspect was.. "what was the first album you bought with your own money?" Wow, I'm supposed to remember that far back? I think it *might* have been Duran Duran/Rio, using birthday money...I was majorly obsessed with them in middle school. (The metal thing was high school and college, although I did start listening to the Cure, Depeche Mode, and some of the better electronica in college as well. omg, and TRENT!) _____________________

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things. Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut. |

Hmmm first album I bought? I THINK it was "Fragile" by Yes. However the first 45 I ever bought was "Frankenstein" by The Edgar Winter Group. Ok so I'm showing my age. 80's ruled - but 70's were better, imho. Now as far as today's music goes, I think that .... umm ... did I mention that 80's music ruled?

"I think you can be fairly accurate in pinpointing someone's age just by the music they consider "the best ever". "
This is true only for people that feel nostalgic about the time when they were in their teenage years, it has nothing to do with the quality of the music itself, it just means you're getting old, lol .Music styles change but good is always that - good, there's something cool in every period of time. I appreciate 60s and 70s because this is the beginning of the contemporary music, a real revolution, with tons of good stuff, it's classic and it will never go away. I think part of the 80's is very good and the other part - not so much, this is kind of "mixed' period that evolved into today's variety of styles. I end up not listening very much the music I used to like because even being good, some of it really feels "old" and I do think music that's being created now feels closer to my everyday life (there's always room for exceptions like some classic rock bands). Movies are completely different story, it looks like the quality goes down, I miss the work of the really genius directors from the past (some of them before "my time" ._____________________

The '80s rocked. I'm 31, and I was at the age where I was most influenced by pop-culture, music, and at that time, just discovering the opposite sex. No responsibility other than get good grades...ahhh...the good ol' days.
Remember Tears for Fears? Remember pleats? Remember white jeans? Remember your Commodore 64? Remember 867-5309? Remember Buggle Boy? Ah man, I could go on and on. _____________________

"...There was U2..." There still IS U2, going strong in both RL and SL .********************************************* I believe the pick in the music and cinematography was 60s, 70s and early 80s. There's a lot of kitschy stuff and significant decline in 80s (together with some very cool stuff). Nowadays I see lots of new talented artists, it's just that the music/movie industry has become literally an "industry" and it's very difficult for anybody to break through without compromising their uniqueness. Hopefully the evolution of the Internet will change this, the crisis in the music industry proves that, MTV should take a note .cept that from a profile Bono is starting to look more and more like Robert DeNiro |

The 80's theme is definitely heavy in SL and I hate it. I respect others for enjoying a virtual 80's life - but it's not for me. I had enough of the 80's in the 80's. I'm from the class of 89', so I certainly experienced the RL 80's, but consider my tastes more late 90's early 00's - and try to live my virtual life accordingly... Theres a scientalogical word that describes this- Denial. |

We've played the same 80s stream at the Shelter for the past 3 years. What's the URL of that stream? I always hear good music at Second Fortune so it would be good to hear that at home too. I've owned land for almost a month and I still haven't found a good stream yet. |

It's a personal thing - there has always been crap music about as well as good. It's all that electronic drumbeat stuff, male vocalists who sound drunk and the mandatory goose-strangling saxophone solos that DON'T do it for me! Now I am imagining a magical saxaphone which can contort around geese to strangle them. Noo!! Leave the geese alone!! Honking rights for geese!! |
