For information on obtaining a license to produce NFL merchandise, call (212) 450-2000 and ask for the NFL Licensing Information Line.

Hang on, I haven't been able to verify that number on the NFL site itself. Their site is... not super well organized for that kind of thing. There's a lot of sites with that number but they all seem to be referring to each other for verification.
![]() I have a great idea for an NFL Licensed Product. Where can I find information on obtaining an NFL license? For information on obtaining a license to produce NFL merchandise please go to www.nfl.biz. Or to hear this information, please call 212-450-2780. Looks like they've automated the process at www.nfl.biz _____________________

Ah, someone doing the right thing!
Well how about this ~ if you want to make a Caledon Oxbridge University cheerleading outfit, go right ahead! I hope you make some money off it. School colors are burgundy and gold, with maybe black for trim. The Caledon tartan texture/colors aren't too hard to find either: ![]() And if anyone asks if you are allowed to make this, point straight to this post! I looked at the "getting a license" thing but I have to have a legit business for 3 years in RL lol. So thats a no go.
Desmund, if you want me to, I'll do it. I'll let you know when I've completed it so you can take a look at it. |

From another copy right thread.
11-16-2009 16:26
Back in the mid 90s I had a license to put NFL team logos on products and sell them in RL. I looked into doing it in SL when I first came on and the licensing costs would mean selling items for 1500 L$ I thought it was way too much. Maybe SL football team jerseys would be a better option. Anyone one up for a Zindra Zeolites baseball cap? Then again I am surprised at what fans will pay for their favorite team's clothing. _____________________

I see a LOT of trademark violations in SL.
There is, for one example, a well known video renter in SL. Do the movie studios know they are streaming these movies (to hundreds of people) for profit? Yet, this same place forbids their customers from showing to more than a few friends at a time. THAT made me laugh. |

@Rafe, did you ever look into the NFL license for SL or did you just drop it? I just dropped it due to all of the qualifying criteria one must meet to become officially licensed by the NFL. The license that I "had" was actually a shared license that I was paying $5000/yr as member of a clothing group. My plans to use a similar license in SL where basically thwarted due to digital licensing not being part of that particular group's rights. As a business model in SL I was thinking about having a SIM designed as a stadium to sell my products from. I was basing the 1500 L$ amount on only having to pay $5000/yr + LL's fees and being the only officially NFL licensed designer in SL (having a monopoly.) The actual cost for an individual to get a license was closer to $80,000 so I scrapped the idea. _____________________

@Melita, yes I know. There are trademark violations everywhere. I ask myself, "ok so.. if they are doing it.. why can't I?" Because they haven't been caught/been complained about. It would be my luck that I'd be complained about and have to take mine down. We have costumes all around us, batman, superman, wonder woman, even avators made to look like the RL celebrities and etc.
@Rafe, ya that does suck. |

It's always better to be part of the solution than part of the problem anyway.
![]() Edit: And since Ciera seems to disagree with the OP posting with her store name (which she didn't even do until I brought it up), I'm going to take the opportunity to plug the store myself! Everyone go check out Nella's store at Sugar & Spice! She has some really nice outfits over there, and not just cheerleader outfits either! ![]() _____________________

I know that there are companies that use shared licensing, you just have to find someone who has the ability to both share their license and sell digital media.

Too small for now... ...tomorrow their legal department will be hiring some young gun who will have too much time on his hands. ...next year they will decide to protect their "digital rights." Just because they 'allow' it right now does not mean that their stance isn't going to change. _____________________

Assuming it's unlicensed, that's a copyright violation, not a trademark violation. Tomato tomah-to. Actually it's both since they are also trading on the studios' names. |

It would be really nice to get the NFL's permission to use the team logos in SL. You might point out to them that Coca Cola allows the use of their mark in SL, because it gives them free exposure. Coke and the NFL are different types of products. Coke sells a consumable, in stiff competition against Pepsi and others, and benefits by constant exposure. They may sell some branded merchandise, but I can't imagine it's a huge revenue source compared to their main business. On the other hand, branded merchandise is a major business for sports leagues - at least judging by how often we see such merchandise. They don't really need the brand exposure - people likely to either attend games or buy their merchandise know the names. With the exception of some larger markets, they're don't really have competition, or at least not competition based on brands. Furthermore, each individual team really has a local market. It doesn't help the New England Patriots very much to get exposure to people in the mid-west or Europe. So they're going to want a piece of the product pie; the exposure isn't going to cut it for them. |

I don't think advertising "I have illegal copies of Sony Pictures videos for you to download" is a trademark violation, because there's no brand confusion, but perhaps. |

The NFL will not license to any video games due to their contract with EA sports. Yes, they know SL does not directly compete with Madden Football.
EDIT to say scratch my previous post... I know that there are companies that use shared licensing, you just have to find someone who has the ability to both share their license and sell digital media. Good luck trying to deal with both EA and the NFL. *gives up again* _____________________

I once wrote two very nice letters to Warner Bros, asking if I could use this guy:
![]() on a pair of boxer shorts in Second Life. They never replied; probably laffed my letters into the trash. I never did get around to making the boxers, but I seriously doubt Warner Brothers would have come after me if I had. I suppose I could have drummed up an argument that a "non-response is the same as tacit acceptance" though I doubt it would fly in a court of law! *shrug* Some companies are more uptight than others. _____________________
