AWM Mars - I really appreciate your advice. I'm not very familiar with changing settings for my GC. I noticed in my Catalyst 8.3 control panel that there is an area for Open GL Settings that is unchecked but available to me. The two options I can turn on are Triple Buffering and Force 24-bit Z-buffer depth. Do you know if these would help me in SL? I'm afraid to make changes without knowing what they do :)

The two items I was able to change to "use application settings" yesterday were Anti-Aliasing and Anisotrophic Filtering. Everything else is as I got it from the computer shop.

I don't know if it was that or the uninstalling & reinstalling or the new 1.9.1.4 version or a bit of everything that fixed my problem in SL but it seems to be working very well right now. This new computer is a huge upgrade from my last and the difference in performance & just how great everything looks in SL is just amazing - light night and day!

Is .NET framework is something I can get from Windows Update?

.NET Framework is only included in the auto updates, relevant to the version you have installed. .NET Framework version 3 is not default version shipped with the OS.

version 3.5 here

It has been quite a while since I used a ATI GC, I swapped to nVidia as they sorted out their OpenGL drivers first, ATI are still playing catchup. I'm not the best one to advise you.

I was having the exact same problems as you Imagin.. after endless tweaking.. I found out if I used Application Settings for SMOOTHVISION HD:Anti-Aliasing in the Catalyst Control Center version 8.3 and put every other setting where I wanted.. it worked.. no more transparent avatar.. but you do have to deal with everything looking jagged... but I can see my avatar and others no prob.. my pc specs are:

Operating System: Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600) Service Pack 2
Processor: Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 3.00GHz (2 CPUs)
Memory: 2046MB RAM
DirectX Version: DirectX 9.0c (4.09.0000.0904)
ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT
2.99 GHz, 2.00 GB of RAM

Hope this helps :)
