In my email inbasket, from Linden Labs:

"I regret to inform you that Linden Lab unintentionally made the email
address associated with your Second Life account available via
jira.secondlife.com. Your profile at that site included your email
address from May 20 to May 24, and according to our server logs, your
profile was accessed during that period. Based on the context and
nature of the access, it appears as though your profile was accessed
through normal use of JIRA and did not appear to be accessed by anyone
harvesting email addresses in large quantities.

We take your privacy very seriously. I am very sorry for any problem
this might cause you."

Erm. Well, haven't had any spam or stalkers, so either no one malicious accessed my profile, or said accessors found me an unsurprisingly boring person IRL.

Did anyone else receive a similar email today?

Was there a name attached to this? It seems a bit clumsily worded, the switching from "I" to "We" back to "I". It wasn't signed "PrinceOf Nigeria Linden", was it?

I'm not sure. I sent the fellow my bank statement and credit cards to help confirm my account, but I haven't heard back....

Seriously, though, I think TOS won't be violated by me listing the address in this case:

"Linden Lab: Rob Lanphier" <Linden_Lab_Rob_Lanphier@mail.vresp.com>

I don't beleive it's a phish, as he didn't ask for any information or any response at all.

Are you serious about that email address? You're making a joke, right?

In case you're not joking, that email address has nothing to do with LL.

Actually, that email address looks right. They use a mailing service and vresp is it.

No, not joking, and was perplexed by it to say the least. I don't intend to respond to it, of course, but I trying to find out if it is legitimate.

If it's not really LL, I am wondering how they associated this email with a SL account. I run a secondlife themed blog via Blogspot, but my while posts there are routed to that address, my email address (I believe) is private.

I have about 6 emails from LL using one of their vresp addresses. One is about the concierge party, one is about age verification, one is about the double billing error, etc. I wouldn't worry about a vresp account. But at the same time, I wouldn't respond to anything asking for a password.

All my emails from LL have been in the nature of - "If you don't stop posting x then we're gonna break your legs."

this actually was something I was concerned about when LL started displaying the gravatar icons on their blog. Each gravatar icon is actually displayed by referencing the email addresses we use (the same ones they ASSURE US will not be published)... then they basically encode the email address somehow and send it to gravatar to find the icon associated with your email address.

Not terribly secure.

You'll notice that the gravatars seem to be gone.

I received this same message. I sent a reply asking for more information to the e-mail address given at the end of the message, which is to someone at lindenlab.com. Looks legit to me.

So, it was legitimate. Thank you all.

I cannot say I'm too worried about the email being briefly public, but it's still a bit annoying, to be honest.

Just to add a little more, I can't get google to load atm (Wow...wtf?) but it would seem Rob Lanphier is Rob Linden.

His user page on the wiki says 'Rob Linden aka "robla"' which would seem to reference his last name might start with 'la' hence Lanphier.

So, probably legitimate.

But just because it says that stuff doesn't mean it's 100% sure to be legit anyhow.

Hey grumpy!,

She said it was a bit annoying. She didn't say she was going to go slash her wrists. :p

Once a spambot grabs your email address then you're screwed. The email address is passed onto marketers and it becomes useless. My main email address has my full name attached to it and so it's easy for me and my friends to remember. Once that email address becomes a target of spam then I'll be forced to use a crappy email address like MyName29399@MyISP.com.

So I'm very protective of my email address and while I might not kill myself when it gets into the wrong hands. I sure as hell will find it more than slightly annoying!

Yes, I got it. Yes it's real. In my case personally, I don't care, I use that email address all over the web, it's pretty much public knowledge at this point. But I'm glad they informed the people this happened to in case it could cause them issues.

Hee, no worries, no wrist slashing here. The thing that bothers me is not that the email was briefly exposed on the JIRA profiles. Joking aside, while the email I use for SL has some RL information attached to it, it wasn't as if they scrawled my phone number on the wall of the men's changing room at NCI :P

What does annoy me is that LL makes a rather large deal about their respect for privacy, and yet supposedly private emails were published. The repentant letter is all to the good, but I would like to hear what they are doing to prevent data leaks in the future. Again, not a huge concern, but one likes some level of information security practiced by people who really do have my billing information on file.
