I got an email from Linden Lab this morning saying: Action required: Confirm your signup It gives a link to click (yes, stupid me clicked me ) a link that is on this adress: http://oi.vresp.com/confirm.html?fid=b2b92f8246&uid=7bc21084af wich gives a page looking like SL webpage thanking for confirmation. I went to change my pasword but i'm pretty worried now. Please any Linden confirm this?

It's just asking you to confirm that you want to receive the Second Life Developers Newsletter. Either you or someone else signed up and used, apparently, your email address. It really isn't anything too sinister, and in no way affects your SL account. Other than the fact you're now subscribed to a newsletter.

Actually, Kris is wrong. It's a scam that's been going around.

One would think that if it was an SL newsletter, it would have a SL URL, eh?

No, Kris is right. Sign up for the dev email here: http://secondlife.com/developers/register.phpAnd you'll get the email as well. They should have sent it from secondlife.com in the current phishing environment. However at no point do you have to enter in any information, except on the secondlife website when signing up for the dev newsletter.

I don't know what the oi in the URL means exactly, but take it away and.. http://vresp.com/That's probly a dead end, but... The address is in -no way- from LL, so I wouldn't trust it one bit. A side thought, if I were to be pulling a scam, and was in a possition to slip a little something into a company's website, keeping myself clean...yah...

Looking at the source of http://secondlife.com/developers/register.php (a legitimate page on secondlife.com), it appears that the signup requests are being sent to: <form action="http://optin.verticalresponse.com/" method="post"> who look to be a reputable 3rd party list management supplier (who also own the vresp.com domain). So I *think* it is all right. We have however asked for clarification from the guys in the Office so please keep watching for anouncements. Thanks for your vigilance.

LF Interesting, cuz I get legitimate emails from SL via that company. And had to confirm my subscription to the Developers Newsletter from that exact same email, via this link: http://secondlife.com/developers/register.phpTry it. See the email you get back. I assure you, I am NOT wrong, Lordfly.

LL realizes that the provider for this newsletter is also considered a "spammer" by many of the ISP's. If history is correct, I believe they were going to look at a different provider for this service.
Since this company is considered a spammer of sorts, this could be a verification that they feel may help them in getting their mail through the ISP's. However, simply by signing and acknowledging that you do want to receive the newsletter by no means insures that you will receive it through your regular email.

The email you recieved is indeed legitimate, I apologize for any confusion or alarm - we utilize Vertical Response for our email list management. Their service allows us to build and manage email lists all while maintaining a high level of privacy for our Residents. If you sign up for the Developers Newsletter, you will get an email in response verifying that you signed up. We will look into the language to make sure it's clear that your email address was signed up correctly. It is good to be cautious about your login information - never share it with other people - there is currently an email going around which is attempting to swipe your password, but the one described above is not it.
