Me, I am grateful: I have fun interacting with people in SL, and I make a modest income on the side too (extra pocket money). My complaints are motivated from a genuine concern that SL will be overtaken by a competitor -- SL is not ready to face a "next-generation" challenge, and then the party will be over

From: Dannoth Dagger Whenever SL is down, topics are always made betting on how long SL will be closed for over the estimated re-opening time. That one is entirely LL's own fault though since they consistently underestimate the amount of time an update will take, and when it runs long they only append the blog post 5 minutes before their end-estimate, or half an hour after it's come and gone. If you know from your own experience that the average update runs 6 hours when everything goes smoothly, plan for and announce 9 hours of downtime for instance. Noone's going to complain if they're done early .

I'm very grateful for all the wonderful experiences I've had playing SL. I'm also very fearful that one day it will be sold to some lovely company like EA or SOE.

From: Snowflake Fairymeadow I'll go first Some of us are paying (a lot of US$) for a service and believe that we should get what we paid for, rather than viewing SL as a "gift" to be grateful for. 'nuff said. Besides, we really don't need another LL should be praised and loved speech.

to those who pay (and I also pay) we CHOOSE to pay, even knowing that we may not be happy with SL, it is not like they hide any of the down time or problems from us
so choosing to pay for a service that you do not like, is your choice
it is not like we have to pay to play SL
(IF we HAD to pay, that would be different)
but all in all, it is a choice
That in my opinion makes all the difference
I have no complaints against LL, or SL
it is what it is and I enjoy it, even with the bugs, downtime and all
and I choose NOT to spend more than I am willing to spend, knowing that it has it drawbacks

I am way more grateful to LL for SL now that I don't pay them to use it. I have kept it in my mind since day one here that what I was involving myself in was primarily an experiment. I realized and accepted that I was NOT purchasing a finished product. I think I can be perfectly capable of being grateful for the experience of engageing in the experiment of SL while still feeling a certain disappointment in the way LL has developed it as a platform. But definately, not paying them for the service anymore makes it siginificantly easier to keep my disappointment at bay. I suggest everyone stop paying LL and we'll all feel much better

As for ungrateful, I don't know. I can't speak for everyone. However what I do know is SL is a platform in which some people pay to play. With that said, I believe they have every right to speak up when the ball is dropped over at LL. Its a matter of integrity on the behalf those who built the system. If anything I think that many people believe in the possiblity and the potential that SL has. Which lies in both the citzens and LL. When the system fails, people are gonna lash out. Its hard to create a work of art if the canvas goes dark. For those who are missing their fix, breath and keep your fingers moving Since there is no competition out there that suits as a decent alternative, people have no other resort other then to grin & bear it or bitch. ( remember mute is not just an inworld button) Choices.. choices.... Perhaps the time of resting on laurels is soon at an end. We shall see. Darken Spire mentioned the aspect of investment. Sl is an investment within possiblity and potential.Investment in the friends you make, and the items that you build and buy. Perhaps a question to ask is how invested is Philip Linden into his vision? Hmmm. Everyones opinion will vary due to experience within this virtual world. . If LL continues to stay the course in which we have navigated through 2007-2008 then we are still in for one heck of a ride. If the issues of Sl are not being addressed in a manner in which its citizens can rely, then this shows a lack of creditiblity in which good hard earned dollars are being spent to maintain the LL systems and pay for LL paychecks. We are still standing on shaky virtual ground and will continue to do so until the Man decides to focus on the virtual world as a whole not " see what I can do!" mentality. (google Mad TV Stuart if your not in the know) Sl is still a work in progress, but its been a few years in operation its time to get some solidification. Second Life Builders, Music Makers,Clothes Designers, Script Makers and the people that become our friends are the gifts, SL is the stage in which we all play (some play nice.. others do not). I'd say i'm not ungrateful. Just observing a trend that may make this experiment go horribly wrong.

Ungrateful?
Naw, I am definitely not ungrateful that sl exists, I met some great people and had some great experiences in there but the service is going down (not that it ever was up and running smoothly anyway) If it wasn't for the people I would have left months ago.
I have the feeling that LL doesn't care anyway what we normal residents think, would like to see implemented or even the basic: would like to be recognised as: people with worries and dreams that they want to at least be seen addressed. We are CUSTOMERS, not "residents"... Best example, check the offical blog and its answers (if answering is allowed that is)... same ideas, worries, fears all over the place... Torley's latest one on multiple players.... *rollseyes*
I talk to a lot of people in world and have noticed that the mumbling and muttering over sl is growing... I don't mean the sheeple in there that moan and whine all the time over everything anyway...
People will no longer take downtime, lag, bugs in permissions, viewers, etc... as a given fact... other virtual worlds will come and are already out there (just open your eyes) so as soon as a really good global one is out, sl will have to live with the consequences of their ignorant behaviour on so many issues. Good luck, I'm deffinitely moving on somewhere else then unless the LL make a 180° turn without breaking their neck...

From: Milla Alexandre Sometimes yes.
I pay for my cable service too....and they are worse than LL with customer service and glitches. But I want cable, so I deal. Same with SL....I chose to get involved and pay for it.....so, whatever. I have very few problems with it seemingly in comparison to a lot of the gripers.
But....my experience in-world has often times been that people start to freak out and complain......without ever checking the web site to see what might be up. Or they are just ignorrent of how certain things work and they go 'off' because they don't understand something fully. I always check the blog, and the known issues.... I try to stay informed so I'm not caught off guard. but it's entertainment...gotta keep it in perspective. I pay for a lot of things in life that probably don't quite give the return on the investment that they should. (I smoke, that sure as hell isn't worth paying for)
In defense of LL....I used to work for a big corporation that relied almost exclusively on their computer network and web site service. I cannot tell you how many times we had issues with servers...or the web site going defunct.....It was just par for the course. And it was contained in one big room downstairs.....I can only imagine the hoop jumping that LL has to do to maintain so many servers in various locations. it's gotta be a nightmare. And yet.....what phenominal thing they've put together with SL.
People gripe..that's just human nature. I'm not big on bitching or griping...it's costs too much energy and I don't need to be stressed over SL of all things. Now traffic...that's another story..... LOL QFT My perspective is slightly different given that I work in online gaming which does have some common ground with LL and in particular some of the sudden moves we have had to pull in order to be legal and compliant - I have empathy with that. I question some things, but on the whole as I am here to have fun and enjoy my time, be creative etc ... because I am not here to make money a lot of the things people moan about pass me by. If and when a credible alternative comes out I might actually stay here instead of following the stampede. OR maybe I am the first out of the door ... who knows. I am a Customer Service Manager rl, so again that colours my view. They need more staff, in my opinion, and better training.

Granted some people can get a bit harsh when SL goes down, but when there comes instances where the paying customers are faced with contstant downtime coupled with continous errors inword that should have been fixed...thats what sets people over teh edge.
As has been said, many of us put our time and a hell of a lot of money into making SL what it can be and when our money is being taken, but its like no one is listening to us thats waht really gets on my nerves.
Ungrateful at times? Probably...Extremely annoyed at how long it has taken LL to start to possibly listen ot its customers? Oh yeah, def pissed about it.

I'd cope with LL a bit better if they didn't *prematurely* mark things [RESOLVED] as has been the case with many of their asset server "oopsies."
