From: my email
The object 'DiSSENT' has sent you a message from Second Life:
test GREETINGS, THIS IS DiSSENTi0N. WITNESS THE RAW POWER OF OUR NEW SEKRIT WEAPON. ALSO, HERE IS COPYBOT: http://www.linkremoved.com (Link changed to protect the innocent)

= DiSSENT is owned by Fricking greifer (Name changed to protect the evil)

This message has been sent to my email 108 times in the past few days. I Abuse reported the object when it still existed, then let it fall into my land (It was a physical object running around my neighbourhood) and returned it to the owner.

This was a few days ago. Now.. I've received this email many time since then, and have gone to the exact location, there is NOTHING there. What's going on? I'm being emailed by a ghost, and that ghost isn't even a person!

Is there anything I can do to stop it, aside from adding it to my spam list in my email (Done)?

Did you scan for it visually or using a scripted scanner (which wouldn't work if it's a child prim sending the IMs)?

If they're half intelligent they'd have it move around or hide if someone comes near it or something else sneaky :(.

The object was physical and bouncing around the sim originally, before I returned it. Now however there is nothing there. I've dragged a box around a large area at that location, I've checked in wireframe, normal, with transparents highlighted, scripts highlighted, with a scripted object checking..there is nothing there.

And every email has been from the same location, where it was right before I deleted it. (I deletedit because it was spamming me with llInstantMessage. Apparently it decided I was mean and went further)

There is very likely another copy of the object. Most likely, a new invisible one. Objects can't talk to us from the grave. :)

Mute it and AR the object owner.

If it's your land, disable object entry (perhaps ... though I've heard this causes problems ... but at least for now), and disallow others building on your land. Use the "About Land" to return any objects you find by that owner.

Good luck. Don't try to "get even" with the griefer. They love any evidence that they're annoying you, and any attempts you make will most likely cause them to give you more attention. Do your best to be a boring target, and most likely they'll move on.

Maybe check the mail headers to see when they were sent? Could be that a ton were sent before the object got deleted but they've been slow in getting to you.

/me does not believe that is the case but you did ask...

Hmm, i had one of those at another sim, i muted it, AR'ed the guy etc.
They went later that night,,,but i still get loads of spam to my email like you discribed.
I dont know, i thought mute ment just that, unless they bypassing SL somehow.
So, cant help you, but your not alone.
:)
Edit: Do not even own that land anymore, they still come and cap my IM's.

Um ... try waiting at least a day before bothering to bump. 30 minutes isn't a much time for folks to see this and respond. It doesn't need to be at the very top for us to see it.

I've checked every way I know how and there's nothing there that is detectable in any way shape or form

Mute it and AR the object owner.

WIll muting it prevent emails? I'm not getting any message at all within SL, only emails, whether I'm online in SL or not.

My land is all of that, and when I got rid of the other one I returned all owned by that person. Also checked again last night to be sure and nothing owned by anyone but me and my two renters. Also, unfortunately this particular location is about a meter outside of my land.

I do so hate griefers... never fight back though, I only want them banned, not me too!

Things fall off of the face of the forums often in my eyes. I also use the 'new posts' button so forget to see how far down it is in the forum. Anywho, seems more responses now =P

Checked that too, and unfortunately, the mail servers are behaving just fine >.<

Could these things be the root of the problems with IM and notices not getting out these past few weeks? The SL email system queued up with a few million of these SL mailbombs, perhaps.

I know that at the time I asked for some help in the forum cartel chat to AR it to remove it before remembering I could let it fall into my land. At the time at least one other had the same problem, so it does seem the grid was littered at least partially with them.

They spam in chat and blue-notice-box, as well as email if they don't like you or something.

And this is with the object muted? If you have muted it, try removing it from your mute list.

Going by http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/LlEmail and the format that sends things in, these look like offline IMs going to email.

I'm starting to like the "something's backed up and these are old messages" idea..

Here's the timestamp for the most recent one: (I know that may not be indicative of anything though)

date Mon, Apr 28, 2008 at 9:22 AM

And no, for me it isn't currently muted actually. I can never remember how to mute things without clicking them, and hadn't thought about it since it's not bothering me in-world.

Just a little background on the griefer if you've not already seen this.

http://foo.secondlifeherald.com/slh/2008/04/anonymous-disse.html

I so hope you find a way to get this problem fixed. I hate these people and everything they think they stand for.

View / Mute List, then add "By name".

Is it sending you emails while you're logged on? They could be (intentionally or by accident) using a bug in llInstantMessage. If you llInstantMessage an object it will send the owning avie an offline email even if they're logged on and you'll never see anything in-world and muting won't help you.

Check if there's anything nearby the location that's colliding with where the prim you returned was. If it's accidental stopping the collision might stop the IMs if it's scripted to IM anything that collides with it.

(http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-269 for the bug... it's "only" 10 months old)

And what are the times like? If you've only gotten 100 or so over the last few days, I assume they're not flooding in. Is it once an hour or every 41 minutes or some other even interval?

edit: also, can you PM me the email text without the object & owner names removed?

Ooh thanks for that info (Both about llInstantMessage and about the muting)

However, yes I'm online at the time sometimes, and as of the last 15 or so, nothing could be colliding with it. I removed all objects under 700 meters on my land yesterday for a renovation and didn't build anything near that spot yet. Maybe 6 prims about 30 meters away or so, that's it.

The owner of the object doing the IM gets the email or the owner of the object receiving the IM gets the email?

(You might also need to mute the owner of the prim, not all sure :o. You can use View / Mute List for that as well... if they're not banned already :()

I'll check to make sure when I log on in a bit :). Fairly sure it's the owner of the object that's being IM'ed though.

They're not constant, no.. they come in bursts, looking for a pattern atm.

There doesn't seem to be any pattern.. one set of 8 sent were at

6:03
6:04
6:07
6:08
7:15
7:16

And other sets are similarly jittered. Sometimes more than an hour between bursts, sometimes less, sometimes more than one arrives at the same time in minutes, sometimes within a minute or a few...bleh
ANd sure thing, sending the PM in a minute or two.

Also, in a few I'll be going to class and work, so won't be able to offer more info on my situation to anyone after that until about 5 or 6 PM SLT
