Sculpted prims are great prim savers. I have a few in my house that save me about 20 prims if they were regular prims. Should we all switch to it? I don't think we should. Prims are one of the defining elements of SL. We wouldn't have the huge amount of builders if we didn't have them. It's better to have a large pool of people creating than just a few.

This is counterintuitive, but 128x128 is the optimal size for loading speed. 128x128 will load faster than 64x64. I couldn't tell you why, but this is the info from the sculptie techies.

I couldn't tell you why, but this is the info from the sculptie techies. I don't know if it's been fixed since then but about a year ago I was running into problems with a HUD I was making: the buttons were 16x16 each and I *think* I was making do with a 64x64 uploaded as "lossless" (might have been 64x128 too). I noticed that on the next clear cache relog the silly thing wouldn't rez properly for up to 5-10 minutes at times but I shrugged and dealt with scripting it first. When the "no rez" of the buttons finally annoyed me enough and I went looking for why that particular texture was stalling the answer was that there's an "expected size" for every texture resolution at which point the texture download will just stop until there's nothing better to do (which apparantly can take many minutes after everything else has finished rezzing) at which point it resumes. Since sculpts will generally be lossless a 64x64 sculptmap might be exceeding the expected size at which point it will completely stall but that same sculpt as a 128x128 might load instantly because even though its larger in size than the 64x64 it's smaller than the cut-off for 128x128.
