From: Sindy Tsure Do the bots need to TP if they don't spot something in search/land that looks good?
With the number of bots he must be running, I'd be surprised (a little) if the TP throttle had a huge impact. I don't believe he runs that many, but other people do run a few, I had a visitor logger out out one sim and it would regularly greet bots who wouldn't even be there long enough to rez, another place had one of those "mop the floor" camping devices and bots would TP to thelanding point and travel so quickly across the sim it looked like they were rezzing there. Staff couldn't even TP in anywhere but the landing point. Another Spam bot flooded my email once with around 3500 IM to email within 4 hours, it got around the normal IM caps by sending them from a different sim every 10 seconds. It travelled a repeating preset path across a few hundred sims of a continent. There's probably a small army of searchbots, spybots & copybots hammering the crap out of the servers TP'ing as fast as they can. Of course the massbotters will just run more bots to make up for lost time, because SL allows infinate free anonymous accounts.

From: Antigone Stork I am glad to see the rates coming back down to around where they were when I used to deal in land speculation in 2005-2006 (initially on a different account. Is there historical data about land prices available somewhere? I started in spring of '06 and surely had no idea that just shortly before that, land had been selling for anything like L$1.5/m2. (This morning, the bottom of 512s seems to be around L$1.8/m2, so maybe there's some recovery underway?)

Does it really matter what land is worth? If we buy and have fun on the land parcels we own then, really, who cares? I understand that for some of us investment IS a serious undertaking but anyone who bought for profit in SL is really taken in by a technology "bubble". My partner and I own some large parcels of land (and willingly paid for the opportunity) but when the time comes to leave sl we'll accept our "losses".
Its interesting to see how people expect sl to be as commerical an investment as reality. It really isn't. I find owning SL land is a relief from the responsibilties I have for my REAL property and land holdings

land = washing machine! when your washing machine is old, you don't expect to sell it for more than you bought it.
…or computer etc etc.

How do you even know what continent you are on?
07-29-2009 05:24
I own properties in Larsson and Amydira and I have always been curious on what continent they are on. I have maps of mainland, but I find it sort of useless because it doesn't apppear to list the individual sims within the continent.
I think a feature like that would be useful if someone is planning to buy mainland.

If there is going to be a big surplus of mainland, as myself and others have said, it would be nice if the tier-free allowance was raised to 1024 sq.m - that would give people a nice square of land (usually, unless it's a zig-zaggy triangle with a 16sq m extortion plot in the middle of it!) and a decent number of prims to play with.
If this was done, it would mean all Premiums get an extra 512m to play with within their existing tier limit, so many would go and buy a plot rather than tier down.

Zoom out on the world map, and you can see what continent you're on.

I think a feature like that would be useful if someone is planning to buy mainland. Larsson is a snow sim on Sansara, and Amydria is on Hetercera Atoll. It would be pretty easy to script something that told you what continent you were standing on (using global coordinates of the sim corner). Unfortunately I don't know of any complete mapping between sim names to continents (nor to coordinates).

Actually, you only need to calculate your grid coordinate distance from the center of each continent, and the closest one is the one you are on. If you are further then the radius of the continent, the result would be "estate", or "near Heterocera" (or whatever)

I figured Larsson was on the Sansara continent when some mentioned the location of snow sims in a prior posting. But, unsure about Amydria. I was just thinking how come it not listed at the top of you screen along with the other land coordinates information? It could also be listed in the about land information. If it can tell you its mainland, why not list the continent too.

From: Argent Stonecutter Wouldn't that break down for the north of Nautilus? If continents are irregular and closely spaced, then you need a series of tests of the following kind: If I am less than X meters from point A, I am on Heterocera, If I am less than Y meters from point B, I am on Nautilus, ..... You can account for irregular shapes by having more than one test per continent, with each test defining a circle around a point, and the set of circles put together covering the irregular shape. (the idea is that a set of a few dozen tests would be a lot quicker than listing all 5,500 mainland regions or something like that to define which continent you are on) Edit: Argent's suggestion of bounding rectangles would work too, if your coordinates are between certain values in X and Y, you are on a particular continent. It would probably be less taxing than doing a square root to get distance by pythagorean formula too.

I think it's easier to draw a set of bounding rectangles for each continent.

From: Argent Stonecutter I suspect Elanthius' motivations involve more than simply the price of land: LL's new teleport throttling code makes it harder to run land bots at all. I accidentally sold Elanthius' bot some land once, and he just sold it right back to me. (I always like to mention this as an example of an ethical business person in SL.)

From: Argent Stonecutter The 2006 prices were a bot-driven bubble, they don't mean anything.
After the 2006 land bubble burst the low was L$3/m2. So this is only twice as low as the previous bottom, and that didn't happen in the middle of a global recession. Bots did not cause the bubble. It was land brokers and the bots. But it was mostly due to high demand and months and months of no new mainland supply because LL was devoting all new servers to Estate land. When it crashed, it bottomed out at L$6 per meter, not L$3.

I was just looking at the real estate offerings on Xstreet and noticed estate lot prices are taking a dive too. Seems most are asking for very low "purchase price".

But it was mostly due to high demand and months and months of no new mainland supply because LL was devoting all new servers to Estate land. It continued rising for months and months after LL started dumping 50-100 new sims a week on the Southern continent and even after the Eastern continent started building up. I bought my land in July, after the beginning of that growth spurt, and the crash didn't happen until December. From: someone When it crashed, it bottomed out at L$6 per meter, not L$3. I was at an "end of the bubble" party on a big patch of sub-L$2000 "first land" sized parcels, and a couple of L$3000 1024s, with no takers showing up all evening.
