Basically, they offered nothing.

It was simply a store, selling their stuff, and unstaffed if I remember rightly.

Very few of the corporate presences are any different, to be honest... and it always seems a terrible waste of potential to me.

The American Apparel store was clearly just "cheap advertising", and as such, I feel no sense of loss at their departure.

I 2nd that!

In todays face paced MTV society, I would imagine a company would want to be associated with anything except boring.

Nah. Not true. The "Guys at the Top" are still business men and quite conservative in their outlook.

I've worked for several companies, years ago as a Temp, and no matter how "liberal" or "exciting" the company was to work for, the big shots were always the same neatly coifed, poofy haired, suit N tie guys who had as much sense of humor as a bag of hammers (not trying to insult hammers).

Ever take a look at the poor uncreative build the Playboy sim was, what a wasted opportunity.

At least the Playboy people get the importance of having a reason to visit on an ongoing basis. Their sim has a club that regularly hosts live music events, which fits well with the company's long-term sponsorship of music.

Isn't the Dell island meant to be okay? I dunno though as I've never been since I'm a Mac person, till we can get OS X on a Dell I won't buy one, and when I do it will be to drop off of a tall building so I have something to aim for when I jump off after it :)

But all it takes is a few companies to make a really good online appearance and the others will reconsider or put in more effort. I'm still not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing, I personally like how we're dealing with lots of little private businesses, dealing with individuals rather than corporations. Though of course it comes with the pitfalls of dealing with individuals (lots of individuals are horrible people). But hey, it can be good.

I have personally heard corporate PR types say that the dollar cost of an entry into Second Life is compared to the initial buzz in trade and press outlets. Taht is, if Business Week says something nice about the company, that is worth several hundred thousand dollars, and therefore a few thousand dollars to build a store is trivial.
