..no, not for smoking.
I bought a bunch of lawn/grass textures and thought I could just drag them onto my land and have them appear on the ground for me to move around, etc.
I get the red circle with the slash through it though.
The notecard says, "rez the object and take it into inventory." I have no idea how that is applicable to textures. I do know about rezzing rez boxes and then taking the items into inventory, but these are just textures with the texture symbol in inventory.
Help please?

Textures would have to be applied to a prim. You can't just apply them to the ground.

I make a flat 10x10 and apply the texture to it, then name it lawn panel and take it into my inventory.

- Jaycee - If you own the sim, Jaycee and want the entire sim to be of that 'grass', you are going to select the grass to appear in the 'Ground Textures' under the estate tools panel. If you don't own the sim and this is just for your land parcel, then you have to put it on a prim as others have said here. Would be cool if you could just drage the textures out onto your land parcel. But you can't.

What is the emphasis with taking it to inventory. That is such a normal thing to do I am wondering why they even mention it. Are these Full Perm textures?
if not I have some full perm grass textures I sell, they are on the ground floor level at Texture Arts Headquarters.

Depending on the size of your parcel, you could also use a megaprim or a particle effect also.

From: Infiniview Merit What is the emphasis with taking it to inventory. That is such a normal thing to do I am wondering why they even mention it. Are these Full Perm textures? So you don't have to keep re-creating the same grass-textured prim? If you have a "Lawn module" handy in inventory, it is easy to rez one when you need it, and duplicate that as required to cover the area. To the OP, unfortunately, there is no way to texture actual terrain on a per-parcel basis. At the parcel level, the simple method is with prims of various shapes, building a fake surface for your lawn. The "advanced" method would be to somehow make a set of sculpted prim planes that closely match the shape of your actual terrain, and that are placed a few milimetres above the actual terrain, and texture those with grass textures. This is a non-trivial task to create, and any time you change the terraforming you would also have to create a new set of terrain covers.

Thank you so much everyone. I will make the little flat thing and put the texture on that. I should have given more info: It is a parcel I purchased. Also the grass is little squares that come out as "256 x 256" when I "open" them from inventory (I purchased 8 slightly different color/styles to experiment with). The instructions say, "These textures are seamless, so you can make repeats per face as high as you like. Rez the item and choose copy to inventory." I'm afraid I don't understand much of that; I have rezzed things, as I mentioned earlier, but these squares came just as is and there is nothing to rez. Also I am trying to understand the size thing; am I supposed to make the "prim" thing 256 meters square? Also, does all this about making a flat "prim" mean that the texture cannot be made to follow the contours of the surface of the land? It has to be flat, boardlike pieces stretched over my property? Apologies for all the newbieness here. - Jaycee -

I think what the instructions met to/should say is … rez a cube and apply the texture to that prim. No you don’t have to make the prim 256X256 to use them …. In fact the largest prim you can make is a 10X10 … then just make it as flat/thick as you wish. But you’re right this big flat board will not follow the contours of you land. However yesterday I saw a product on Xstreet that claims it will make sculptie prims that follow your lands contour. Never used it … maybe someone here may have … but here’s the url if you wish to check it out. From: someone Apologies for all the newbieness here. Jaycee …. Hey no apologies needed …. We all went though that newbieness period at one time.

From: Jackie Silverfall Jaycee...where did you find the lawn/grass textures? Any recommendations for a good one? Thanks. Jackie I have a bunch, and I am changing the full sim when I change them, but 'could' do the prim thing if wanted to. I get mine at Creative Fantasy. (Fantasies?) They have several (wonderful, beautiful) sims, so let me know if you can't find that exact one and I'll send you the LM inworld that drops you right in front of the ground textures. You can get lost browsing around their sims, and forget what you're there for. Oh, Lilith Heart also has some pretty ground textures, and I got a nice free one from there too.

Also, does all this about making a flat "prim" mean that the texture cannot be made to follow the contours of the surface of the land? It has to be flat, boardlike pieces stretched over my property? ... Jaycee, You're a bit confused, understandably. What you have purchased are "textures". Textures are pictures...bitmapped images. Like a .jpg or a .tga file, you know? They aren't objects. The "256x256" refers to the image's "size" in pixels, not its size in meters. Objects are made out of geometric primitives, or prims. You can make one by right clicking the ground, and selecting Create. Then click your magic wand cursor on the ground again, and a plywood cube will appear. This cube can be reshaped, resized, rotated, and moved. It can be combined with other prims to make a more complex object. Most importantly, it doesn't have to stay plywood. You can apply textures to it, to make it look like a rock, or a lock of hair, or a steel plate...or a patch of grass. You can think of textures as being a coat of paint that you apply to objects. You can make several of these, cover your land with them, and texture them with the grass images you purchased. For more details on object creation and editing, visit The Ivory Tower Library of Primitives. They have a full set of self-paced tutorials. The texture of the actual land CAN be changed, but only under certain circumstances such as others have described...for instance, if you have purchased an entire private island estate from Linden Lab, you can specify the ground textures used. There are five available for each region, and which one is used depends on the terrain elevation.

I built my little garden platform (10x20m) over lunch and flew it up to my skybox cottage and just slapped a freebie grass texture on it for now. Arwen described attaching it to the cottage as "docking the space shuttle" Now I have to put some Linden 1 prim trees and my picnic furniture out there, maybe some flowers too, then I'll go shopping for "good grass". Reporting back..

..thanks all for great info and suggestions..
It turned out to be simple (of course) and follows the ideas expressed here about prims.
I made a 40x40x.08 super prim, nice big flat prim, and dragged the grass texture to all sides of it, including the thin edges.
Then I placed it to my satisfaction and copied it, placed the second one and began terraforming as if I were an expert. lol
I did have to learn about the "facing" thing from a mentor who explained about getting it to look real by making it repeat at the proper intervals.
Thank you again; this forum got me going with good, basic info!

Bhata- there are a number of Mega Prims going around in world and u can find them for free on Xstreets- try to get the ones made recently - not the Gene Replacement ones that are older because the new ones are more maleable. They can be cut and hollowed just like regular prims- what they CANNOT be is sized. If u do it will snap back to 10 x 10.
Jaycee - i will drop on u some lumpier sorts of prims u might find helpful too in ur build. To break up the flatness.

You declined a sculpt ground cover that might have been of use to you. Good luck in your build.

BT Thank you Bhata- you are welcome anytime and the slurl is in my picks as well as well as my siggy in the forum- the megas are free though and you can find them on xstreet- u do not need to buy them or really even have anyone give to you. Best rule of thumb is to rez the smaller ones and see from there how much higher u can go. a 20, 40 50 is safe and will not mess up things, unless u anger ur neighbors by dropping it on them! Just be careful and u will do just fine If u drop by my store - take the TP to the Rainforest world - that showcases a 52 M sphere - which is pretty darn big and still causes no problems. Holler if u need anything

BT Please feel free to come by and explore the Rain Forest world- there is a teleport from my store and the item is on sale shd you decide you want to call it home. It's even less than 100 prims . ETA: The prims include some poses and furnishings so there is room for your stuff and u can always remove what u might not want as it is all copy/mod

Our Meadow!
05-09-2009 21:24
Jaycee, this was something I wanted to figure out for the longest time. Finally I found some one-prim grass circle things that come in varieties: greenish grassy, white flowery, red flowery, and so on. You drop them, spin them, mish them around, and pretty soon you have this wonderful meadow all gently waving... take a look at my Picks, there's a shot of our home garden there... the grass items are copy, meaning, you can rez as many as you wish, and are made by Moon Fargis - just find him in search and tp to his shop. Very reasonably priced. (Read: wow, cheap!)
