From: Sredni Eel If you were told that a cool DeeJay was playing at a club, but there was no linden prize involved, would you bother to go to the club for good music and possibly to meet new friends? Depends on who's telling me of this "cool DeeJay". If it is a close friend, I'll trust their tastes and go. For a select few DJ's i'll put off a lotta stuff just to go listen to them. I don't care about cash prizes, but I do love dressing up for events. From: someone I don't want to have to bribe people to come out and dance to some good music. Am I off base here?
No. No bribe should be needed. Nor should it be taken for granted they come to your shows even if they are friends. From: someone Am I also off base for expecting the club to support its staff? When I got there, a notice went out to their group for some other event at a sister club, so basically I got the shaft. I almost walked when I saw the notice, but professionalism kept me there as long as I had a couple of friends listening.
That I can understand. That's just plain wrong.

From: Sredni Eel So a buck thirty is more important to you than a friend who will play any music you want, engage in conversation, dance, and generally help you have a good time? Yeah, you know that makes a guy feel pretty good about himself. Well.....yeah. When I do (rarely) go to a club I turn the music off and have my own music on anyway. Why would I want to listen to other people's choice of music when I can listen to my own? Say if there's 10 of us at a club and we all make requests - that means I will like 10% of the music. You can get conversation pretty much anywhere too, and anyone who needs help having a good time needs to get out more. As for dancing - you're just playing an animation; I can get a bot to do that. I might actually. Dress him up as a little monkey in a fez and make him dance for my amusement. That would be awesome. Personally, I'm fed up of uppity DJs pretending they're some sort of performance artist - you're not, you're just playing someone elses records - and having hissy fits because no one is paying them any attention. You want attention? Learn to play an instrument and become an actual musician, instead of doing a job that Windows Media Player set to shuffle could do.

From: Irene LeShelle First I'll have to say that neither in SL or RL would I go anywhere because of a DJ. Actually, I would prefer that there was just music and no DJ (or that the DJ kept quiet).
This.

Characteristics of DJs that make me want to go to parties they work at:
1. Good music without prompting 2. Willingness to play requests 3. Ability to find and play the requests 4. Sexy female voice 5. Doesn't say much but DOES announce the records
Pep (6. IMs me to ask what I am doing afterwards)

We have regularly scheduled dances on Etopia and have found that themes for the dances work well in attracting people. We dont have cash prizes tho at all times we have free stuff folks can take. We usually have about 20-25 people depending on the night and those folks chat, interact and have a great time. I personally like that kind of atmosphere much better than a room full of people not talking and just there to win a prize. I tend to not go to clubs but more look for the ambiance of a place to attract me or the crowd of friendly people to do that.

While you have a point with "track list" DJ's you should go and google "turntable musical instrument" as watching/listening to the seriously good dance/techno genre DJ's particularly, is quite an art in itself. It may not be your preferred listening but to assume that ALL DJ's are just playing track lists is a generalisation.
