Is Second life for me? What does it really offer?

I can meet interesting people from all over the world. My SL "neighbors" are from Japan, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, France...

I can be a dragon, a mermaid, an anime character, an elf.... and interact with others of my kind via role play (RP).

There are loads of fascinating places that residents have created, and I can spend hours exploring. (See http://www.mermaiddiaries.com/ for an excellent "tour guide" to get started.)

As mentioned above, I can play with the SL building and scripting tools to make things...

I can do/be/own things that I can't in RL.

There are others who use SL for counseling services.

Oh, and casinos are now banned. Thankfully.

Ah I see.

Thanks for all of the information. My counseling online has always been donation based and I've been doing it for many years. Just the actual virtual thing seems like a good idea since I get contacts from so many people that live out of the US.

Now I see the game has lots of building and scripting. What if I have utterly no interest in that? I'm glad casinos are gone. I thought that was somewhat dumb.

Can anyone give me a list of things to do? Now when I decide to pursue putting up this online area for myself in SL. A area so people can meet me at random or scheduled for some sort of virtual counseling. How would I get that area made? Would I be able to do it with no scripting experience? Can I hire or buy some sort of preset area? Would this have some sort of montly charge?

All I can think of right now.

I use SL as a way to get past an extreem shyness, often mistaken for being.. stuck up...No I'm just not into being part of a clique.. I like people who embrace everyone.. You find that a lot on SL.. BTW these cliques... But now I have an addiction to SL and that is a bit harder to overcome, aside from removing the PC from office, home, the corner cyber cafe'... Hey idea. Why not host a service for SL addictions?

This is what I meant by the visual aspect... you can "be" these things only if having the visual aspect of looking like one is sufficient to constitute "being" to you. The social side isn't really there because groups of elves in SL basically socialise the exact same way groups of anything else do, including groups of humans in music clubs.
