Hi Virtualis and welcome to SL and this forum.

I tend to fall into groups one and two, only roleplaying very occasionally these days.

Be sure to check out CARP (Capture Role Play) which is a fun game if you can stand the lag. how much in character you play the game is up to you but basically its chasing people around a maze until you catch them and do wicked/kinky/silly things to them.

Would REALLY recommend you read some of the sticky thread at the top of this forum (Top Tips for the Newly Born).

Do come along to the Forum Hangout sometime.

I have to second this. That sim is *thoroughly* entertaining!

Can I make them sit out on the curb with a mailbox on their head? My old mailbox post has dry rot.

How about if I really want a turkey sandwich? Can I send them to the Subway? (6in on wheat, pepperjack cheese toasted, with all the veggies except jalapenos...mmmmmm).

Can I put them in a bikini and make them wash the biplane?

Do you see why RP is a bad idea for people like me? We just screw it up and annoy people.

I'm Category 2. I joined SL because of the possibilities it offered to live a different life...to see what sort of person I might've been, if I'd made different choices. So Lindal isn't at all like the real life "me".

I used to think that it wasn't appearances that were important...it was the person behind the appearance. After four months in SL, though, I've come round to a different way of thinking: the "person" is an amalgam of both appearance and mind. When I am Lindal, I am a different person than when I'm offline. My avatar's appearance, her experiences, and her online friends shape Lindal's personality...as does, of course, the mind behind the eyes behind the computer monitor.

And I guess you could call that "unstructured roleplaying"...except that it doesn't feel like that at all. It feels like being me...just a different "me". And so, yeah, it bothers me when people want a lot of RL information that has nothing to do with me or my virtual world. "East coast USA" is about all I'll readily mention, as that's pertinent data as to how late it is for me, and what language I speak most fluently.

Yes! This is a persistent fallacy I find, in our culture -- this idea that who we "really are" is somehow disconnected with our physicality, or that our physicality is somehow secondary compared to the "real us". I think it derives in part from religious ideas about the soul, and in part from the line of philosophy derived from Descartes who drew such a sharp distinction between physicality and the mind -- neither of which I agree with. I see us as mind/body amalgams as well -- although it's quite fascinating to me that you came to this insight through SL. That's very interesting.

Yes that's pretty much spot on what I mean by category two. Category 3 is what I consider to be true roleplaying, which I see as taking on a role that is as similar or different to our RL selves as the scene or character requires -- more like improvisational acting, rather than category 2, which I see as "being a different me" as well.

I also recommend CARP, and have had quite a few fun evenings unfold after a chase around the maze there ... but in fairness it should be pointed out that the RP in CARP is D/s roleplaying: it is the Dom/mes chasing the sub/bes around the maze, taking bits of clothing from them every time they are caught, until .... well you can deduce the rest I am sure. :D

OK - I've been obsessing on this all morning. So at the CARP sim, I can chase someone through a maze and if I catch them, I can make them do whatever the hell I want? This is so wide open that there can't be specific animations that apply. I catch them and tell them what to do? I can use them for a coaster or make them dance while I shoot at their feet? How about naked jumping jacks? Can I write on them with a Sharpie? Is it mostly just sex stuff or if I tell them to bake me cookies and fetch the newspaper, will they get offended?

Please tell me that this isn't some VSRPS (Very Serious Role Play Sim) where I have to have a backstory and be perfectly in character at all times or risk a ban. Please tell me these people have a sense of humor and can play along.

Holy Crap. LET THE REIGN OF TERROR BEGIN!!! OMG. The potential for awesomeness is off the charts. Are private parties allowed? Forum CARP!!! I want to catch Ann and make her feed me pie, then grab Brenda and steal her panties.

Edit - Victorria posted after I started this post and answered some of the questions in here. Thanks for the clarification.

Just a little further clarification ...

The convention is that when someone is caught you ask them to remove an article of clothing. If you catch them when they have no more clothing to remove, then ... that's where things get interesting. Remember, though, that it is very D/s oriented -- the people who are being chased want to be caught and ordered around by a Dom/me, for the most part.

It's not VSRPS -- as long as you stay in "role" as Dom/me or sub/be, it's fine. It's when people run around laughing and saying things like "OMG you peepul are such freex" that they get tossed out.

Well, it seems to attract all sorts. I have an awesome chat log which I guess will never get posted now (the thread was locked) from a discussion I had with a Master who couldn't take "no" for an answer, and had interesting theories about women... he was at one extreme. At the other extreme was a Domme who caught a sub, and made that the sub agree to carry aound a sign that read, "Hey, I'm over here" for the rest of the night before releasing her.

I imagine that if you bring the necessary pose balls and other equipment, you might be able to get some to do the very strange things that apparently regularly cross your mind...

Love.

Whee! Forum field trip! Thank God I don't have to get my mother to sign a permission slip for this one. Do we have to have field trip buddies and hold hands the whole time?

Yeah. Let's not repeat what happened when you got lost when we went to the Museum of Natural History.

erm, a field trip to CARP? LOL! They'll never know what hit'em.

Victoria's right, it really is D/S. And, the conventions around disrobing are more roleplay-like than strip poker like - that is, you would be regarded as 'no fun' if you just tossed your halter top without some tantalizing chat about it. And strategic resistance.

And, it is always good to know where whoever you're playing with wants to go with it. CARP is a great place to meet kidnappers, if that's your gig, or at least I've met a few there.

Victorria - Our posts crossed, and I missed your earlier explanation. Thanks for the clarification. It still sounds fun, although the potential for hilarity is greatly reduced. I would never run around calling people freaks or whatever - that's not even remotely funny. The D/S thing is a mystery to me - I honestly would make a terrible Dom and an even worse Sub. I look for consensus which is incompatible with giving orders and I subvert authority every chance I get. I probably wouldn't fit in well and I would just end up with upset people.

Love - the stuff that crosses my mind on a regular basis - they don't make poseballs like that.

Oryx. Get the permission slip signed. I don't know what I'd order you to do if I caught you, but it would be spectacular. Ever drive a backhoe? I need a swimming pool dug out. Wear a bikini and a hardhat.

Hmmm. What happens if I get caught? /me is mildly concerned that the tables might be turned.

It's the typical predator or prey tag thing. You pick which one you wear. Or you can wear both if you set it up just right. That makes for interesting times...

You got it. I'll be sure to pick up an "oiled" skin with maybe some dirt smudge tattoos as well. And if YOU get caught.... my friend, I'm sure there's a rock with some chains on it somewhere.

Brenda: I couldn't help it if I wanted to check for anatomically correct cavemen! Doesn't everyone wonder about that?
