Latterly I seem to have missing inventory every time I log in. I have about 18000 items in my inventory and usually I get between 3000 and 15000 actually show up. I end up clearing my cache each time, but even that, after waiting interminably to reload the inventory, doesn't always fully restore it.
I am using the latest viewer, and also use the latest OnRez viewer, and I get the same issue with both. It is really beginning to p*** me off, especially as it's almost always the item you want that just happens to be the missing one.
Is anyone else having this issue, or is it just me?

I cleared my cache for the first time in I dunno how long a few days ago, and after it had reloaded I'd lost some 3000 or so items. So no, you're not alone.

Strange things can happen time to time with inventory. I get the same thing sometimes and it seems to depend on where I log in all the time. I have a rather large inventory my self. and sometimes only half of it loads. I find sometimes when I search for something like AB and then my inventory will start downloading again and finish loading everything. Just the other day all my notecards would not show up in my inventory.. All of them were gone.. I didn't see them come back till the next day. Another time all my textures were totally wiped out.. I kinda freaked on that one.. but they showed back up 2 days later.. It can be frustrating at times

Are you always fetching everything on the same sim? If so, clear cache and try a (couple of) different sim(s) (log on to that sim directly, or log of there and relog into last location) because some sims don't seem to fetch everything (I had one that insisted 15,200ish was all there was to fetch last night when it should be 16,400ish). Avoid refetching on openspace sims and before you refetch on a full sim use View / Statistics Bar and look at "Pending Downloads" and "Pending Uploads". Both should regularly be dropping back down to 0 (even stuck at 1 you'll encouter problems). It's fine if it's always spiking (from 0 to 10 to 0 to 50 for instance), just as long as it returns to 0 regularly. (Actually as a general rule you wouldn't want to do much of anything that involves inventory operations/rezzing/buying/adjusting attachments on a sim that has a stuck pending downloads/uploads if you want to minimize inventory loss) On a positive note they seem to revamping the inventory fetching to be more reliable and solve apparant - in the "not really gone" sense - inventory loss issues like this.

Thanks for the advice Kitty. I'll try that. I hadn't been aware of the pending issue, but i'll keep a sharp eye on it in future.

The sim you log into after clearing your cache matters. Log in to a low-lag sim, such as Cyclops.
After you've logged in, open your inventory window. Search on some terms. (It'll sometimes help to type in a VERY long search term, even if it's a nonsense/made-up series of random letters.) If the search seems to slow down a lot, change the term.
Don't do anything else while your inventory loads. Avoid changing clothes, IMing, etc.
If it doesn't all come back, try again.
Also, many people have said that it's better to clear your cache when you're NOT inworld. Drag the cache files on your hard drive to the trash and empty it. That's better than using the Cache Clear command (in Preferences) while you're inworld. For a Macintosh running Leopard, just trash your cache folder (Library > Application Support > SecondLife > Cache). For Windows, I have no idea what to trash, but many others do.

One thing that may be happening: I believe there really is an issue with some lost inventory items -- things that either do not exist in the database or are corrupted. It could be that these are the items that are no longer showing in inventory. If so, it is highly likely that the items would not have rezzed anyway. Corra is another good sim for inventory loaded -- it is almost all water and nothing ever happens there. Log in, sit on the ocean floor, and start typing garbage into the inventory search window. Definitely do not change clothes or try to rez inventory items. I have found that IMing does not seem to have much impact on the loading of my inventory, but Miles could be correct that you should also avoid that. The last time I had to do this, it took somewhere around an hour to get all 20k loaded -- hence the reason for avoiding clearing cache unless you are really having problems with stuff.

If the grid/sim is/are getting stressed it can sometimes take up to 5 minutes. I clear cache at every log-in, I'd go crazy if it took an hour each time .

It usually takes 4-5 minutes for mine, and I avoid doing it during peak or IGS* times. I have 14,400 items. On my older, recently-retired computer, it usually took at least twice that long. I suspect the network speed, processor, and amount of RAM can result in huge differences in the amount of time it takes. *Irritable Grid Syndrome

In recent days I've noticed that my inventory has been showing 800-1,000 fewer items than it should. I wondered what was up--in a way it's good to know I'm not alone.
It's even better to hear that LL is working on making inventories more stable (speed the day!)
I should note that this has been happening even though I have a much smaller inventory than those that have been mentioned (~8,000 items), and a fairly new computer.

When you clear your cache, do you ever do it on your hard drive? That sometimes helps too. I had 20,000 items in my inventoy too. It was always a slow load. I lost a bunch of stuff too, I cringed, closed my eyes and kept hitting *delete*. Now I am down to around 11,000 items. I love collecting free stuff even if I don't need it, and those treasure hunts are too much fun.

Whoa. Now I feel super fast =D My inventory loads completely upon startup?.. Least from what I've been able to tell, lol. Just over 10,000 items. Keep trying to clear it out.. But then someone has a good sale or yard sales pop up.
I had some inventory issues a week or so ago where it told me that it wasn't fully loaded.. Hrm.

A number of textures have gone missing from the asset servers in the last week or so, breaking existing content all over the grid. This included some textures from the library (I believe those have since been restored). In newer clients, the textures show just as matt gray "unrezzed" textures; in older clients they show the classic "Missing Image" texture. PLEASE VOTE for this critical issue, SVC-3063 "Textures show "MISSING IMAGE" https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-3063If you've never voted for a Jira issue, it's easier than it looks, simple instructions here: /327/4a/234101/1.html#post1826980Note that not every unrezzed texture is due to this bug! Those who know how, may want to watch the texture console to verify that all textures have loaded before suspecting this bug is the issue. There are other ways to verify that the asset is actually gone ... if you are not sure, do not assume this is the problem with something you are seeing. But in any case, it is a real problem, so do vote!

Of course, those last few times it took that long, SL was also having fits -- and SL having fits is usually the only time I clear my cache.

From: Kira Cuddihy .... I love collecting free stuff even if I don't need it, and those treasure hunts are too much fun. Yes, this is my biggest problem. I have started disciplining myself and only picking up the freebies that I really want/need and immediately cleaning house after treasure hunts. I've also spent the last week or two doing some major deleting in my overall inventory.

From: Ponsonby Low It's even better to hear that LL is working on making inventories more stable (speed the day!) Now if LL would also work on in world rezzed items not poofing...that would be heavenly. Case in point - my THinC trunk of items (items used only occasionally and/or copies) that I store in world EXACTLY so I have them when/if inventory items go missing. And the topper was having the LL Live Support Rep tell me, "Gosh...that's what we recommend doing (storing items in world) to keep huge inventories under control." Well I guess it didn't work this time.

The last time I tried (months ago) the viewer stopped fetching anything when it wasn't the active window so switching away to do something else while you think it's fetching but it's actually just pausing could be counter-productive .

That is definitely something worth knowing. I wonder why, when the viewer will continue to do other things when it isn't the active window.
