One of theall-time greats in science fiction. Yes. I'll think of him every time I ride in an elevator that stops short of the stratosphere. |

My favorite author of all time. I am deeply saddened to hear this.
Though he would think it silly and superstitious, I will log off now and light a candle for him. Sigh . . . |

Very sad, a true pioneer in the field of science fiction. How many authors (of any type) can say they've had anything like the practical impact the Clarke Belt has?
As somebody who named all his sims after an astronomical theme, he will be sorely missed in my household. _____________________

Very sad to hear this - he was my introduction into the wonders of science fiction, and even today I still find much to ponder reading his earlier works. A true visionary.

Look for a new constellation up there-- I would not be surprised if one appears.
Clarke peeled layers of ignorance off my young brain, so I could absorb (some) of the possibilities. _____________________

I'm sure we would not have had men on the Moon if it had not been for Wells and Verne and the people who write about this and made people think about it. I'm rather proud of the fact that I know several astronauts who became astronauts through reading my books.
Arthur C. Clarke, Address to US Congress, 1975 i'm a johnny come lately to Mr. Clark's work, 2001: A Space Odyssey was my first(movie that was) which made me read the book, etc etc... Rest In Peace Mr Clark and thank you for allowing this one to dream along with you. _____________________

The first is making shoes at night while, you know, while the old cobbler sleeps. You can bake cookies in a tree. But the third job, some call it, uh, "the show" or "the big dance," it's the profession that every linden aspires to.

makes you think LL should have the Ape & Icon (wrong word) image up on the front place in his honour, but then I would guess everyone would think SL was broken!

Arthur C Clarke was not only a giant in the science fiction world, but a giant in the science world too.
The geostationary orbit for satellites was first popularised by Clarke in an article in Wireless World in 1945 as a useful orbit for communications satellites. As a result this is sometimes referred to as the Clarke orbit or the Clarke Belt, and is the part of space approximately 36,000 km above the equator where geostationary orbits may be achieved. Rock PS A geostationary orbit is one where a satellite takes the same time to orbit the earth as the earth takes to rotate, ie approximately 24 hours. So for an observer on the ground the satellite appears to be stationary in the sky. So by placing one over the middle of the Atlantic, for example, above the equator, signals from Europe can be relayed via this satellite to the USA and vice versa, using antenna that do not need to move. In practice, there are small movements and antennas need to move a little. Arthur C Clarke, may you RIP. _____________________

A great man, a great visionary and a great story teller. They don't come much better than that. Thank you for the few brief years you shared with us.

I loved "Childhood's End" among his fiction works. He was a great scientist as well, I remember reading some of his Oceanographic work. I'd say he had a good run, making it to 90. He definitely made his mark.
