I think this qualifies as a resident question. I was at a music venue last night listening to a great performer. I wnt to tip her and found that the lowest Fastpay was L$ 450. A bit steep, I thought, and paid my usual tip (I go to a lot of gigs and nearly always tip). I then got a notecard telling me my tip wouldn't even buy her half a cup of coffee at Starbucks. Novel approach to tips Meanwhile, I'm getting loads of IMs from different music groups to come to a charity gig. I'm a sucker for charity gigs, so - a little irritated by the constant IMs - I go. But once I was there I couldn't find a charity tip jar. IMed the venue owner, who turned out to be the Starbucks coffee-drinking performer from the first gig, to ask where the charity tip jar was only to be told that it wasn't a charity gig at all. They'd made a mistake in the IMs. Seven times? So how do we know when a charity event is really a charity event?

Do what I have done, go to the website of the organization. Read the fine print of how people are able to raise money for the organization. Usually there is a contact number you can call to verify if this is the case. If the person is legit and is a highly publicized event, I would think the organization they are raising funds for would have knowledge of it.

OMG......that is so 'NOT ACCEPTABLE' for a performer to do that in ANY life, be it second or first. I'm a singer in RL....so the 'tip' thing doesn't really apply because of the up-front fee for performing. But JAYSUS! for anyone to complain about the size of a tip is so unacceptable and rude and a lot of other things that I won't mention. As far as knowing whether or not a charity gig is what it states it is, who knows. I would probably find out the organizer, and ask for the charity's name and registration number and check directly. Other than that I'm not sure how else one would check it out. I'm sorry but I still can't get over that performer you mentioned......unbelievable.

The person at the first venue was a total ass. If I had intended to tip her L$1000, I would not have tipped her anything had I seen the lowest amount to be L$450. The notecard was so rude I wouldn't even know where to begin to comment on it. The economy in SL cannot be compared to RL and if she doesn't get that then he needs to look elsewhere.
I don't trust charity gigs in SL unless I specifically know the people involved. We've all seen how much there is to distrust in SL. I have so many friends in SL who are involved in charity organizations that I stay busy enough, otherwise I'd focus on my RL contributions.

If I wanted to donate to a charity I would just go to their website and donate directly
one never knows in SL if it is legit or not
now if it is a type deal where I can buy something and the money supposedly goes to a charity, then I will buy IF I want the item, doesn't matter to me where the money goes LOL
would love to know who the entertainer was so I know who or what name to avoid when looking for places to check out

Pity is she's a great performer with a great voice. I go to A LOT of music gigs every week, and I've never seen this. Her exuse is: "I've got make a living, too". It was so brazen, I had to smile

If 3 people who were going to tip her 400L and decided not to because of her notecard she would be out 1200L - her loss. I like to tip many times during a performance. At the start for encouragement, halfway through if I'm enjoying myself, and also at the end if it was truly amazing. If I was told my initial tip was too low, I don't know, I think I would be put off giving anything at all.

Shame, as she was bloody good.

From: Chas Connolly Her exuse is: "I've got make a living, too". Lot of people make a living without the extra funds to buy Starbucks everyday. Pretty unprofessional and without thought of the less fortunate that are there to support her. As for charity: I don't do any charity in SL. You have no idea at all if the money you give in $L is actually going to the real fund. Anyone can make an avatar and claim they are collecting for any charity and you have no way to verify unless the charity in question specifies that particular avatar is a collector for them (even then you have no idea if that person is skimming). Better off paying direct. To many scammers and un-trust worthy people out there these days.

They usually provide great entertainment for your donations, too. I think I'll keep an open mind, but thanks.

For what it's worth...... there are a great many great charities active in SL and I think it's a great thing. A mistake posting or listing does not a scammer make. All it takes is a google search or a check with a friend. I will continue to support charity events and live music gigs for same....

Yep same as me I'm a sucker for tipping something evertime I see a tip jar and the owner is present. I figure yeah $50L isn't much in RL (I'm not rich enough to tip $500 either) but if half the people seeing the jar tipped something, the rus;t would be good. But seeing most of the population don't appear to even have $10L. The jars rely on a few people donating good amounts instead. Yes I tip people for just being there and performing and if I enjoy it I tip them more afterwards.

Contact the RL Charity that the SL Charity event is in benefit of. If the On line event is using the Name of a RL Charity, they have to be registered with it to do so. If the RL Charity has never heard of SL, or the people from SL organizing the event, it's Probably Bogus.
