Legal liabilities or no, I think it's absolutely fair to characterize both live helpers as infuriatingly terse/pedantic/unhelpful in the information they provided. This whole thread could have been avoided so easily.

From: someone
Support Agent: You cannot own land on a Basic account Kujila

This has nothing to do with the issue at hand, and the Helpers who volunteered this tidbit seem like they're being willfully obtuse in order to sidestep the problem. How many years has it been that everybody here, including Linden Lab, has referred to holding land (estate or otherwise) as "owning"? If a new internal policy compels Support Agents to always hammer people over the head with this brand new distinction whenever estate land is discussed, then they need to acknowledge in the process that the accepted usage of the term "own" is changing rather than just smugly stating the barest literal facts - with the result that they appear purposely unhelpful, or just plain stupid.

If you want to get technical, Kujila didn't ask about "owning" land, he or she asked about "buying" land, without stating the outcome...!

I'm sorry, but... well, you just don't hear many stories about these support people treating a customer *well*, do you :|

I really wonder what sort of grade-school dropouts they are outsourcing live help to these days, Sheesh!

This info they have been giving you is patheticly inaccurate. I have NEVER, with ANY account, been Premium. I have, in spite of that, used the "Buy Land" function numerous times, on PRIVATE ISLAND SIMS, IE "Estate Land" as opposed to "Mainland". I have bought all the land in an entire sim that way. I currently "own" a quarter of a sim, pruchased that way. So they are just plain dead wrong that the "Buy Land" function only works for Premium accounts. How do they think most Private island sim residents obtain their parcels? By waving a magic hankie?

Yes, on a private island sim, the sim owner is still the defacto actual "Owner" of the sim, and can eject you and reclaim the land. But that wasn't the OP's issue. The issue is that the "Buy Land" function would not work for them, apparently because of that transaitional state of being in mid-downgrade. But the point is, it shouldn't CARE about membrship status if the parcel isn't a Mainland parcel! If it is getting hung up on that downgrade status, then this is a BUG, and they need to fix it.

The OP could go create an alt today, have their main account give enough L$ to the alt to cover the purchase, and the alt could buy an entire sim's worth of land on a private island, no questions asked. Why should it give a flip if a former Premium member is in mid-downgrade, when they are NOT trying to buy a mainland parcel?

Hopefully not the same ones they will outsource the Forum management to.
