From: Treasure Ballinger In SL I don't give these things much thought and am very accepting of everyone, and treat them as they obviously are choosing to represent themselves. Which, IMHO, is the best way to play the game. And hopefully helps to bring us all closer together, in the long run. I look forward to the day when the average American could be described as a "light skinned black person" (or person of color), and skin color becomes no more significant than hair or eye color. Alas, I won't quite live long enough, but I'm hopeful nonetheless. And is it just me, or do many other people find that most mixed-race people are so damned good looking? In RL, I'm pale, blond, blue-eyed, and what I wouldn't give for a quite bit more melanin to let me enjoy the sun more! Oops, sorry, off topic! We were talking about furries. Some of them are cute too.

From: Lias Leandros This is a fallacy. There are real BDSM Masters in SL that have their slaves living their homes with them in RL that do force that slave to log into SL when they tell them to - and only log on using restraint life viewer so they have no control over what that Master does to them. ^-^ WOW, restraint life viewer. SL constantly amazes me.

I'd prefer to see the day when there are no Mexican-Americans, African-Americans, Philipino-Americans, Italian-Americans, Irish-Americans, black Americans, white Americans, furry Americans, centaur Americans, hyphenated-Americans....... This was never meant to be a country of isolated communities who rejoice in the fact that "we" are not the same as "you." The United States of America is supposed to be United. Saying you are a light-skinned black person emphasizes the fact that you are different from the dark-skinned white person, the latino person, or anybody else except for other light-skinned black persons. This does not foster unity, it fosters "us v. them" attitudes and should be abolished.

Meh. I'll just call you a ferret and be done with it. I've never understood the point of the "Politically Correct" versions. I very rarely use them, and haven't yet offended anyone. Most people can tell it isn't being used to offend. If it does, then oh well, they apparently have bigger issues with their ego than I'm willing to deal with, as far as I'm concerned. I also agree with the "us vs. them" mentality that is so prevalent it is beyond annoying.

However, I was responding to this statement, by Lear: " wonder how laws would be interpreted in an actual court case where the appearance didn't match the RL race. My guess is that it could go either way, and get reversed at one or more levels. The best part is that the division probably wouldn't fall on conservative vs. liberal lines, either -- for a change!" and in referring to myself I was referring to his statement about 'appearance not matching the RL race." You can take anything out of context, and make it mean or appear to mean, something else.

This does not foster unity, it fosters "us v. them" attitudes and should be abolished. That will never happen as long as there are people who look for ways to scream discrimination. They actively seek to find ways to put a discrimination title on everything in their lives............and hyphenated ethic/race titles work very much in their favor. It's a badge to wear telling the world than they are different and therefore you must never "offend" them in anyway. And some of the offenses are absolutely beyond pettines. But, it keeps them different.........and on the attack against the rest of the world. And to answer Scalia's (did I spell that right.........I not interested enough to go look) question about my opening a white only club in SL. What makes you think I'm white? What makes you think I'm anything at all? If you went online and looked at my profile you have seen what I tell you I am.........but you don't know and you never will know if what I stated is true. Linden Lab knows who I am........but they don't know my race. Get off your condenscending high horse and learn that avatar discrimination in SL is a non issue. All this thread was for you was an opportunity to highjack it for your warped sense of what things should be here. That's not my sense of what SL should be........and you don't see me highjacking threads to spout them either. HaHa............I still didn't answer your question. It's a stupid question for anyone except you. And I won't answer. It's, frankly, not your business. Now carry on with "your thread" (since you took it over)............I won't participate any further.

This does not foster unity, it fosters "us v. them" attitudes and should be abolished. That's a vast and extremely one-sided oversimplification of why people use hyphenated American references. There is nothing un-American about celebrating aspects of our immigrant culture and heritage so long as they are not inconsistent with notions of democracy, civil liberties, and the pursuit of life, liberty, and happiness. The ability to celebrate our differences while remaining united by those common values is one of the things that is supposed to make this nation great, and the concept that a nation of immigrants should disavow their cultural backgrounds or that it is core to what it means to be "American" is quite absurd. There is nothing inherently separatist or isolationist in doing so either. It's a distortion of fact to characterize the evolution of concentrated areas of Americans of one particular racial, ethnic or national background as the fault of that particular group's desire to be isolationist when the consistent and historical truth of the matter is that these kinds of geographic communities come into existence in no small part because people from the very same self righteous groups that make such ludicrous claims move out of the area when they believe they will no longer be the group of majority there or that the property value will go down. The us versus them divisiveness to which you refer occurs because of bigotry, not because people choose to acknowledge their immigrant heritage. It is somewhat ironic that the very proponents of such bigotry when called out on it will say that the targets of their bigotry are crying wolf by saying that they are being targetted for discrimination for being Jewish-American or Asian-American etc.

To answer Scylla's question, I can think of instances where it would make sense to insist that avs working in a sim be white. Say you wanted to do a sim of the Ming Dynasty, or do an SL Cotton Club, or some kind of serious historical re-inactment of Viking raids on the British Isles. Would it really be so beyond the pale to ask that avs "hired" to play the parts in these sims be Chinese, Black or Norse (i.e. white) looking respectively?
I'd draw the line, personally, on saying only whites (or humans, for that matter) should be allowed to visit the sim, but I don't have a problem with expecting the people creating the environment to look the part, particularly since changing ethnicity in SL is as easy as clicking your mouse.

That sound you hear is my standing ovation. I've never understood why homogeneity should be preferred to diversity. What a very very dull, and stagnant culture this vision of "unity" would produce. Nor do I get why some who embrace and celebrate individual freedoms have such a problem understanding why diversity and individuality, expressed as a part of one's cultural makeup, is such an integral part of those very freedoms.

HaHa............I still didn't answer your question. It's a stupid question for anyone except you. Well I guess that's where you try and live up to your own forum title? At least you made Scylla into a Supreme Court Justice, I guess, if you were going to call her something other than her name. I don't see anyone as being on a 'high horse' - just people sharing their own thoughts, views, experiences and opinions on a topic - in this case, discrimination. And some of us have expressed that it is an interesting discussion, whether or not such a thing can truly exist in a virtual world. I've never seen Scylla say that the two are the same thing, in fact she's said they are not; so I'm unsure why some are once again making her into a thread's whipping-avatar.

Yep, I agree pretty much entirely. Your point about visitors to the sim, however, raises the spectre of the debate we had here a week or two ago, regarding the 1920s Berlin recreation, and the expectation that visitors should make an effort to fit in visually with the historical context. This did not extend so far as actually joining in RP, but did include the sort of avi one wore, even to the height and clothing. I'm still sort of torn on this one. In the context of SL, such a request does not seem very unreasonable: as you say, ethnicity here is not difficult to change. So far as I know, the Berlin sim did not ask people to change their ethnicity (although it did their species), but given the echoes of RL racism that might be involved in hypothetically asking someone representing an Asian or a black, say, to change their ethnicity to make things more "historically accurate," I'd probably draw the line there?
