Sheer Shirts?

I just bought some outfits that appear to have solid tops, but when I put them on, they're totally sheer. The clothes I got came from two different places. Any idea what's going on or how to fix it? Thank you!

I'd start with clearing cache and restarting SL; turn off palletized textures if you have the option, change outfits, go to different sims, rebake, do Advanced Character Character Tests Test Male or Test Female, stuff like that.

What operating system, 32 or 64 bits, what video card, what version of video driver, and what version of SL are you using?

Also you could try alternate viewers, such as the Release Candidate, the Cool Viewer, Imprudence, etc.

Thanks, Suezanne. I figured out a few things with creative Googling (trying the character test freaked me out, though!).

My graphics card is a NVIDIA, GeForce 7600 GT/PCI/SSE2, Open GL 2.01. I've poked around and noticed other people having problems with NVIDIA.

What's weird is, I didn't have the sheer shirt problem until I opened the Graphics tab of my settings and changed the screen size. When I swapped clothes after that, my new shirts were all sheer. I checked in the Graphics tab again, and saw that something called "Avatar Cloth" is unchecked. Is it possible that that is what caused it? If so, any idea why all my other clothes still show normally? I just checked it and restarted after clearing cache, and no difference. Hmmmm.

Sorry, forgot to answer the rest: I'm using Windows XP, and the version of Second Life is whatever version I just downloaded off the site last week.

A lot of folks suggest using nVidia driver version 175.16 or 175.19 instead of the more current drivers.

Avatar Cloth, when enabled, is supposed to give an illusion that some parts of your clothing are being blown by the wind, at least that's what I've noticed about it, along with it sort of deforming your body a bit along with the clothing. You should not need to have it checked to have your clothing appear. As with many settings, it can't hurt to toggle it one way for a while and then the other and see what happens. Another setting one could play with is the avatar skinning.

Did some more playing around ... I deleted one of the outfits and cleared my cache, relogged ... then I went back and bought the outfit again. The top is still sheer. However, except for this and the other outfit that is having issues, none of my other clothes are sheer. It's pretty baffling.

I checked in the Shirts under Appearance, and nothing there seems to indicate why they would be sheer. The images shown there on the little side tabs look just like they do on the product display. So ... I'm at a loss.

I wonder if the fault is in your computer or in the clothing. How does clothing on other people look? Do other people see though your shirts?

When making clothing (I use Gimp, I assume this applies to Photoshop) the transparency can be set. For some blouses I have a very slight transparency to duplicate real ones (we all know what it looks like, in RL, to wear a dark bra under a white blouse). Other things I make are opaque (sweaters, wool skirts, etc.), while some of my bras and panties are very sheer or less sheer in certain places. (like RL)

The transparency cannot be set using the appearance dialog box.

There is a problem with clothing being sold that does not look like what the box (or Xstreet picture) looks like. For example, I have bought "business suits" that show flesh at the waistline and my navel (top too short and pants top too low).

Marybeth, other people in the world look just fine. As for how other people see ME ... um ... should I just wander up to someone and ask, "Can you see through my shirt?"

Sorry. That just made me giggle!

It probably is this computer for whatever reason. I've noticed sometimes when I'm playing that like, giant beams of objects start shooting out everywhere. If that makes sense. Like huge colored splinters that match trees or dresses or whatever. It's really weird.

Ohh pfft. They're just going for the modern TV show female business suit. Everyone knows that RL female CSI, FBI, Police & CIA agents all wear tummy/cleavage showing clothes. :p

Maybe they shouldn't watch TV, or at least watch different shows (perhaps C-Span). :)

I have always wondered what it would be like if I showed up at the law firm where I work wearing a pants suit but with tummy flesh showing, or how much influence I would have standing in front of a state legislative committee (these days about half women) with my belly button showing. ;) (I draft tax and other legislation for several state legislatures).

But RL can be similar. One person who worked in a store selling professional suits told me that the items on display were the high margin items but what they really sold was on the rack in the back. And mail order catalog and web pictures never seem to be very accurate. :(

Just walk up to a strange guy and ask him. :):) In RL you could watch his eyes open real big, but in SL that wouldn't show up.

Actually, I would recommend asking someone who is a friend and is female. :)

Giant beams of objects suggests a problem with video drivers. I don't see that you said what your video driver version is.

Also might disable VBOs, vertex buffer objects, in Graphics, Hardware Options .

Is the shirt supposed to be sheer? Does it look sheer on the ad? do you have a pic of the ad and of your avatar wearing the shirt?

It is possible that the shirt was made sheer, but the person who made it forgot to say so on the ad and had something on under it when they took the pic (it does happen)

as for the nvidea, yeah I had that issue too with nvidea, I switched to the release client and no more issues with the nvidea card

No problems [as long as SL cooperates] with this configuration:
nVidia Geforce 8800 GTX, Driver: 182.08 Which is the current release.
Vista Ultimate, 32 bit
Intel Pentium, dual core, 3.2 GHz
4 gigs RAM
Cool Viewer release of March 6, 1.21.6.0

Mary, somehow in my mind I just can't picture you (in RL) in your dress-for-success power suits but with your belly button showing! :)

Update: I asked, and yes, other people can see through my shirt. However, it's clearly supposed to be opaque from the picture in the ad. So ... no idea what's up.

The suggestion was directed at someone who has a graphics problem, with different hardware than yours; it was not a suggestion for those who don't have a problem to change what's currently working.

Trying the Cool Viewer couldn't hurt, I'm using the Cool Viewer for the Release Candidate with adequate results.

I have several shirts that are sheer. Also torn sheer. They are sheer on purpose.
You may have actually bought sheer material.
I think they look wicked when on. Men like them also.
It's possible what you ar eseeing is NOT really a problem at all.

Mine too, first hint was clothes not showing correctly (jacket layer for one outfit added solid white stockings that really wasnt there), next hint was the giant beams .... 2 weeks later the card died.
