Temp Rez Objects

Is there an easy way to find objects that are using a temp rezzer? I noticed the number of objects changes in my sim about every minute. I suspect that is being caused by a temp rezzer of some sort but I have looked all over at everyones objects and nothing appears obvious to me. Thanks

View->Hover Tips->Tips On All Objects - then the little box will tell you if an object is temporary.

You can also do Advanced -> Show Updates and look for the green poofs. Press ctrl-alt-d if you don't have the advanced menu. Show Updates does different colored poofs for different kinds of updates being sent from the sim. Red means it's sending you the complete object, blue is a position/rotation update, and green is an object being deleted.

Since temp objects get deleted after a minute, continuous temp rezzers will show a big poof of green as the old object gets deleted by the sim then a big poof of red as the new ones get rezzed..

Beware a big viewer FPS hit when you enable Show Updates. It's normal.

edit: and, if you can't find 'em, post the region name..

When in use, temp rezzers themselves are usually set to transparent so, to see them, you'd need to have ctrl-alt-t pressed.

Frontier Linden made a temp prim scanner. I'll drop a copy of it into your profile. By wearing it, you'll be able to tell if any temporary prims exist, both on a parcel and throughout the sim. It also shows the X and Y coordinates of them, but not the Z. Even so, you should be able to track down the temp prims and the rezzer will be near them.

Thanks Phil. The scanner helped me find it. Certainly a very useful tool.
And thank you Viktoria and Sindy I tried your methods as well but still had trouble locating it. Mystery solved. :)

Phil, do you mind dropping a copy in my profile as well? I'd really appreciate it. TY.

There are (IMO) several legitimate uses for temp rezzers.

One is to create a temporary demo copy of a product to show a customer.

Another is to create a swarm of little animals or plants, such as a school of fish for an underwater build.

People who use temp rezzers should understand how they work, and their downsides. While they can be used to "cheat" parcel prim limits, they do NOT cheat the overall prim limit for the sim. In fact, while one object is de-rezzing and another rezzed in its place, the rezzer actually causes twice as many prims to exist for a brief period. What one parcel gains, the rest of the sim has to pay for.

When I ran a rental operation, I used several temp rezzers for decorative purposes for the community at large...but I specifically forbade my tenants to use them. One of the privileges of being a landlord.

That was changed a long time ago. Temporary prims haven't counted against a sim's hard 15,000 prims for a long time, so parcels that use temp rezzers are not taking away from other parcels.

If temp rezzers are bad news why is it possible to go out and buy any number of different ones? Apart from cheating the prim limit do they have any legitimate use?
Temp rezzing was originally created for objects like bullets - things that you WANT to disappear, so no one has to clean up after they're created. I have a teleporter that creates an object for the avatar to sit on - this object is scripted to llDie, but it is also temp-rez just in case.

Temp-rezzers are also good for on-demand rezzing of large complex objects. Think prefabs - at any one time the rezzer uses only enough prims for one house, but is capable of displaying an entire product line, one at a time. The rezzer will usually keep the house in place for 10 minutes or so, but then it disappears, and nothing is rezzed until another customer shows up.

A BAD use of rezzers is when folks use them for permanent gardens, etc.. This puts a load on the sim, not because of the number of prims, but because of the computational load of destroying and re-creating them. If avatars are present, the load is greatly magnified, because on every rezzing all those avatars have their views updated - even though the object looks the same every time, it gets a new UUID on every rez - i.e. once a minute.

Linden Labs doesn't stop people from selling tools that have no legitimate or functional use whatsoever. If they did you wouldn't see "Copybot Protector: !QUIT" all over the place.

There are a number of legitimate uses for temporary rezzing objects: bullets, vehicles, followers, demos, and various physical objects (animals, moving parts, relays). Some even make sense as automatically re-rezzed objects (for exmaple physical animals that may drift into no-script land under high load).

But the typical temp-rezzer that's being discussed here is not in that category.

Phil, you are probably going to keep getting requests for that... why not throw it in a box for $L0 and put it in your shop?

Or post it to the script forum, if it's mod..

It WAS? When? And why didn't I get the memo?

It got sent to everybody but was marked as a temp asset. Only those that logged in within a minute of the memo being sent got to see it...

LMAO!

It was merely treated as just another change in a release of some server code a year ago(?) - maybe a bit less.

It did occur to me to put it somewhere where people could get a copy, but I don't want to do it in the store or put the script (not sure if that's mod) in the forum. It's Frontier Linden's work, not mine. I'm happy just passing it along when requested. Although I suppose i could ask him for permission to put it somewhere for people to get a copy.

I'd be curious to know how it can tell the difference between a normal prim and a temp-on-rez prim. I don't know of anything in LSL that can distinguish, unless it is an undocumented feature or call.

Hey, that's a good point.. Maybe some secret llGetObjectDetails parameter?

You can call llGetParcelPrimCount(llGetPos(), PARCEL_COUNT_TEMP, FALSE).

That just tells you the raw count tho, right? Not where the prims actually are..

Since you aren't going to place it somewhere for now, go ahead and send me a copy also.
