Help! Can't detach "humping" toon

OK...I'm a complete newb, about a week old, so go easy on me. Maybe this help info is easily available, but I couldn't find it.

I was trying to learn more about buying land. I did a search for some small parcels and teleported to a region from one of the search results to just check it out. Upon arriving, a female avatar to the side of me immediately gave me a set of "cool sunglasses". I didn't know if this was some ritual or welcoming present, but I put them on anyway...

Well..they AREN'T sunglasses. It's some huge, purple, inflatable beach toy/cartoon type contraption that is now permanently attached to my pelvis and screaming sexual vulgarities all the time. I can't get rid of it. Nothing works. It's like there is some script overriding the drop or detach commands because nothing works when I right click and try those commands. The same if I go to my inventory and try to detach the thing from there too.

Any help would be appreciated. I haven't logged on in a few days because this thing is attached to me wherever I go and I don't know if others around me can hear it yelling. I was afraid to go to one of the help areas because they are PG.

I WAS having fun learning this place until this happened. I guess I'll have to learn not to be too trusting.

TIA

Right click the object on your avatar, and select "detatch".

right click on yourself and choose 'take off' then 'detach all'

that will take off the 'sunglasses'

and don't forget to AR that oh so helpful avatar for griefing.

Ok...the detach function is working now. Hmmm...it wouldn't work at all the other night. I'd hit detach...then I'd wait...and wait...and wait...but nothing.

Thanks everyone. The ugly, obnoxious toon is gone and in the trash.

Horrible that this is one of your first impressions of SL.

And not accidental---the person who did this to you would have clicked on your avatar and thereby learned that you were new---and therefore would provide more 'entertainment', since you probably wouldn't have known how to get rid of the screaming humping attachment.

And another reason for targeting you new people: you are less likely to know how to file an AR (Abuse Report).

As mentioned earlier in this thread, filing an AR is a great idea, once you get your bearings enough to know how to do it. (It's easy---instructions and information can be found here: https://support.secondlife.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=4417 ).

People who do what that person did are rather sad little twerps, but ARs ARE effective in slapping them with some consequences for their actions.

For the record, there are lots of fun, goofy attachments flying around the Grid. I've got a whole folder of them that I pull out for crazy parties and such. :) And welcome to Second Life. (Edit: Not to say that your icky "sunglasses" were that sort, but, well, there ARE fun, goofy attachments out there. LOL.)

Excellent point (I'd forgotten that the gift of the 'sunglasses' would have been recorded).

Ah welcome to SL Mandolin~!!!

You have just experienced the consequence of not practicing one of the golden rules of SL.....LOL Never just accept things from strangers.....and definitely don't accept and then wear! LOL This is just a goofy form of harassment and it's really only an annoyance. Often times you can just log out and then re-log...and detach the offending bit.

But......for the most part there's plenty of friendly helpful folks around too......many of whom are right here in the forums....so kudos to you for coming here for help. One of the ways that people who do like to cause trouble......get away with it...is by preying on the new avatars. So....you're a little wiser for the experience. Never click 'ok' or 'accept' unless you are sure of what's coming to you. Also.....not to confuse you.....but when you start bouncing aroud to new areas you'll often get info notecards and landmarks automatically handed to you from shop scripts set in place....or greeter scripts. These are ok......tho you can certainly ignore those too. ;)

You may want to do a bit of exploring and learning before you jump into land ownership tho......there's a lot to learn and a lot to be wary of when looking for land. Give yourself time to adjust and have fun....and meet people that can guide you~!!

To the OP: Definitely make it a habit to NOT accept unsolicited objects from people. Unfortunately some are bad news.

If you talk to someone a while/have a good sense about them, it might be less risky, for instance some people like to help 'newbies' by giving free alternative clothes, hair, shapes, etc. to wear.

If in doubt just ask them for any 'newbie shop' landmarks they have. Some have free sunglasses if you still need some. Milky9 I notice has some in several shades.

Not to flog my group (I try not to, at least not often!) but you are welcome to join and meet some nice people that way...it's in my SL profile.

Woohoo! Is this something like the llama feathers? You do know that to flog isn't exactly a good thing...................... unless they are so inclined. :D

EDIT: Ahh OK I was only aware of this definition:

**********1 a: to beat with or as if with a rod or whip****************

I didn't know the British used it like this:

3 achiefly British : to sell (as stolen goods) illegally <flogged their employers' petrol to ordinary motorists — Economist> b: sell 7 <traveled by horse, flogging encyclopedias — Robert Darnton> c: to promote aggressively : plug <flying around the world flogging your movies — Peter Bogdanovich>

Isn't language fun? :p

To the OP: Welcome to SecondLife :) I'm sorry one of your first experiences was not a good one, but on the bright side no harm was really done and you've learned a valuable experience that will stand you in good stead for the future.

Definitely be careful about accepting things which are just sent to you in an unsolicited way. It's a bit like opening an unsolicited attachment on an email from someone you don't know; you can do it, but it's not advisable. If you do accept it, *usually* no harm will be done until it's either rezzed inworld (dropped on the ground) or worn it (dragged onto your avatar, or right click > attach/wear). So you normally have a second chance to not activate something harmful. This was a relatively harmless (though extremely annoying) item; some items can be far worse, for instance like emptying your entire account's balance into the perpetrator's.

Having said all that, don't be put off and while I will say be careful, SL can be great fun.

I'd really like to hear back from the OP on this. The described behavior (inability to detach) isn't something I recognize from attachments. (If I interpret the description one way, I can imagine this thing in fact may be a follower instead of an attachment).

Right. It may be helpful to "unpack" that explanation a bit.

Scripted objects have to get your permission to do certain things. The problem is that once they have that permission, it can be retained forever and there's no way for you to later revoke that permission.

And scripts can get certain permissions automatically, without explicitly asking you for them, if you Wear the object, or Sit on it. Objects simply rezzed on the ground do not get any permissions without asking for them explicitly.

The very nasty permission to drain your entire L$ balance is one that must always be requested explicitly (and appears in a kind of putrid orange dialog box to get your attention, in contrast to the regular blue request box). So if you see something like that, asking to take money from you, it is very unlikely you want to grant it that permission.

It could be, or there could have been a lot of lag at the time. I've certainly had the situation before where I've been unable to detach hair or another sort of attachment and that normally corresponds to "lag". That aspect may just be an innocent "one of those SL things".

Usually the Mudkip is handed out in welcome areas with scripts disabled. When the wearer puts it on it plays a sound loop of "You f***ing love it, don't you b***?" but the animation usually won't launch. When the wearer trys to detach, they're usually stuck in welcome area lag and can't do so. Eventually if they do get it of, they're left "enjoying" the floor because the script glitches and finally triggers the animation. (^_^)

The "Nice Pants" bull used to do the same thing and it's tricky to deal with without relogging. Even "World >> Stop All Animations" will only stop the animation on your own client. The crowd around you still sees your avatar having a moment of ~ahem~ on the ground. (^_^)

Really... This applies to just about everything on the internet. >> If you're not absolutely sure that whatever is behind that link/icon/menu is exactly what you're looking for: DON'T OPEN IT! << I live by that rule and because of it I have 4 virus free computers between work and home, no less than 6 spam free Email accounts, and I ain't been caught in a situation like that. Even when I was still new. Though, I still HAVE all the items. =^-^=

Don't feel badly about it. Not too long ago someone gave me an apple, and when I asked what to do they said, "You eat it. You wear it to eat it."

So I did, and it turned out to be an animation that made me run away, squat, and look like I was having diarrhea.

Add to that the fact that I was at a concert on a very crowded sim. The lag was so bad I didn't know what was happening, including the fact that I was up on stage.

At least you had the excuse of being new.
