Hey im Kim Pettersen from Norway, and i know this is a topic which is lots of times on this board (this ismy first post thought) but i am really newbie in Second Life in getting money, i have like 100L$, and i want to earn money, i have skills in 3D modeling (using a third party application called "Maya";) and i got some skill in DJ'ing. But at the moment, there is no one who needs DJ's as far as i can see, and i dont even know how to import my maya models into the game, which i heard is avaiable, as a sculpt map etc. Anyone want to help me? I really want to earn money ingame, but its not that easy as people think it is.

Greets Kim!
PS: If it is posted at a wrong category, feel free to move the topic :)

Put credit card info on file.
In-world, there is a button on the top-right of the viewer.
This allows you to purchase $L.

In fairness to the OP, they asked how to EARN money. It's true the easiest and quickest way to acquire money in SL is buying it with a credit card.

To earn money in SL will not be quick or easy. I suggest you spend a month or so just exploring the game, go to building classes (free to take) to learn how to create objects in game, and then you will have a much better idea about the market and what it will take to produce a desirable product or service.

If you have experience with Maya then that is a good start. Although, I recommend you take some time to just learn SL. Like Annabelle suggested above, put some money into the game (not much...you can get over 2000L for around 10.00U.S.), and take your time getting to know the game. Then you can decide what you want to make and sell.

Agreed, take the time to learn SL before trying to make money here. You not only need to learn how objects in the grid work, but how the social aspects of SL operate. If you have good RL skills, there are people who will pay for your services. You might not make enough to quit your RL job, or even come anywhere close, but you can get some sense of satisfaction and a nice addition to your resume.

Hey! That was fast answering, thanks for the answers. I am do know that i can BUY money, but i dont think i should do that, because my goal is to earn money, and maybe take it out from Second Life, which will take a year or something... Hehe. I take your advice, i've been exploring for like a month or 2 already, and those classes, i will check out. Please tell me if it is something more i could know, and a special request from me is, is there anybody that wants to talk to me over MSN about Second Life? I have NO Second Life players on my MSN list, and i am alone about that game, if you know what i mean. Here is my email address:

You may find a lot of folks, like myself, prefer to communicate inworld, and not everyone uses the same IM. You can IM anyone in the game though. Feel free to shoot me an IM, and if I'm not terribly busy I'll be happy to chat.

These aren't exclusive. Buying some L$ to invest to start your business can put you in a better position than you'd be in trying to start from nothing. It's how every real business starts, too.

Importing from Maya - if you are using the Personal Learning Edition of Maya, you can't export from that into SL (unfortunately - it applies a watermark to the files it exports, which ruins them for SL purposes). If you're using the full version of Maya (and you were complaining about paying for L$!? ;) ) then there's a script available that does the exporting for you: http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Sculpted_Prims:_FAQ#MayaExporter .

Kim,

If you already have prior 3D modeling experience, particularly with Maya, it sounds like you have the EASY part down. Devote some time to exploring Second Life, and get to know and understand the community. We are, after all, your marketplace. As challenging as it can be to run a successful busines in Second Life these days, it's all the more challenging if you don't understand the world in which you're trying to conduct business.

So as others have said, and I'm merely repeating in a different way, get acquainted first with Second Life, and endeavor to engage with and understand the extraordinary community of Residents who give it life.

It may be worth a look at some of the content creation forums, perhaps specifically /8/1.html, the Building Tips forum, which tends to be mostly discussion of sculptmap generation methods these days. The general 3D modeling knowledge will be more useful to you than facility with any specific tool, and in the foreseeable future, sculpted prims won't be the only way to use 3D models in SL (thank heaven).

As for wanting to make money and take it out of SL: yeah, lots of people want that, just be aware that for every one of those, depending on how big a tycoon, there must be a few dozen or a few thousand residents who are willing to pay money in. So it's not like there's a desperate need for more people eager to cash out; quite the opposite, in fact.

Kim I'd also suggest checking out onrez and SLExchange because you can easily browse items there.

As Qie says check out the content creation forums, loads of tips and links to tips.

Get some ideas of the products on the market.

You're right. It'll take at least a year in most cases. Also, the old adage is true. It takes money to make money. You'll need $L to pay for all those sculpt map uploads.

The rule to make money in SL is to not try. Have fun, and if in the process of having fun some opportunity comes up, then wonderful.

Kim, edit out your e-mail and name.

Det er riktignok 60 K.P. som kommer opp på et søk i telefonkatalogen, men når du i tillegg opplyser om alder har du blottlagt deg for mye. Vær mer forsiktig gutt, ok?

Edited to add: How can you state to be a newbie in SL when your account is over a year old? *scratches head*

What do you mean So?

Do you not want to know that someone is here giving out there email address for you to chat is a teen and not an adult? If not that I digress and you have all my apologies do as you will.
I for one would like to know so that I can apply what I say in the appropriate context.

Also I am not stating that the OP had meant any harm.

Gosh, I wish I had Maya when I was fifteen. Then again, I might never have gone outside....

Thats not true. you don't have to spend money to make money in SL, Ive never invested a single penny of RL money into SL and have cashed out Tens of Thousand of USD. Everything I've ever earned from SL has been 100% profit. All you need is time and skill and not money.
