Along the same lines (sort of) as the SLExchange thread, I was wondering how some of you purchase Lindens. Since rezzing I've been going thru Lindex, more and more thru SLExchange lately. But I've looked around and found MANY people willing to sell you Lindens.
These apparently include some who are charging a significant premium to do so, as well as those who selling on the cheap.

What are some of the reputable outside brokers (I guess you might call them) who charge a decent premium, deliver the money honey quickly, and above all are trustworthy?

hmmm?

anyone outside of the ones you mentioned (LL directly and SLX), you will probably not only lose your lindens, but 50% more and never get your REAL money back.

in other words, DO NOT buy from eBay or any other such place.

I only use LL and Slex for the reasons 3Ring mentioned.

I rarely ever buy lindens anymore but when I did I always clicked the little blue circle at the top of the viewer. I knew I could do better elsewhere, such as Slex but I'm lazy.

I don't. I bought some about two years ago through SLExchange (about three US$ worth), but have lived within my means since.

I use LL, on occasion the little blue circle in the viewer, but mainly via the website.

That's awfully nice for you, Mari, but it's completely unhelpful to the original poster. The fact that someone may occasionally be willing to put a couple of RL bucks into Second Life hardly merits what sounds a lot like your sanctimonious disapproval of their profligacy. I certainly wouldn't want to be chastised for not "living within my means" just because I run my place for everyone's fun rather than for my own profit and I occasionally decide to buy a cup of coffee's worth of Lindens.

To answer the OP's question, I also buy Lindens using the little blue circle in the viewer. There may be a better rate available on SLExchange but I've never bothered to do the work to look because at the amounts I buy it would only amount to a few pennies' savings. I would be extremely wary of buying from any other third party sources, for the reasons others have mentioned.

Have to join the majority of the posters upto now: the blue circle thingy. Since I pay about 15k rent a month, I am a regular buyer :-) And if I buy 15k or 20k, how much difference would shopping around really make? And of course NEVER buy from other sources then the ones mentioned here.

Greetings, Marcel

I've so far just used Lindex from the web site or the viewer. I believe SLExchange is reputable too and I would be happy to use them - but no where other than those two.

I buy strictly from LL. I bought once from a 3rd party site through ebay, and while it went through Ok and they were legit as far as I could tell, once LL announced they would be going after sites dealing in stolen Lindens, which I agree with, I stay strictly with Lindex.

I think you're a tad hard on Mari, Madhu. She's the last person here who would be judgemental of someone's SL. Since she is a kid in SL, I'm sure she doesn't need to buy much. Knowing how great her SL Dad is I'm sure she is well provided for.

I click manage my account usually and buy from the buy section in the account page because
the blue circle thing sometimes gets "grumpy"

Could someone explain to be in simple terms the costs involved with the two main methods of getting money in and out of Second Life? Up until now I use the Lindex, but have been considering using SLX, but haven't worked out the pros and cons of each.

(Note, this is for money IN and money OUT)

Can anyone give me a thumbnail of the costs?

I live within my means. I have a RL budget that covers gaming and entertainment. I buy L$ from LL with that. 10 to 50K usually, depends on what I want to do or who I want to spoil :)

When I first started, I did buy some from 3rd party site (I forget which one) because of the limits on new accounts. But for now, I buy from LL only. It's more of the ease and convenience than anything else.

What little blue circle thing?
I know there is a 'buy lindens' item in the world menu (maybe) but my preferrred method is this:

Right-click on pretty shiny item in shop and choose "buy"
Get message that says "Haha, you don't have enough cash. Wanna buy some?"
Say "Uh, sure"
Click.

Wayyy to easy to spend money in SL, that's for sure.

B.

And before anyone mentions it, that cat thing last night was strictly a scientific experiment.

I always use the Lindex web page and buy with a limit order to get the best price. I know, it's only 3.5% better than the in-world spot market, but it feels like one tax avoided. Can do about the same on SLX, I think, but sorta never saw the point of using them to buy. I believe there may be an advantage using SLX for cashing out, though I don't know that for sure. (I make a point of always finding some way to spend anything I earn in-world. And then some, evidently. :o )

I would never, ever, under any circumstances, use a third-party site that wasn't explicitly approved by LL. I really don't want to lose 150% of what I bought and have my account locked till I send official documents in hardcopy to San Francisco, pleading my case that I'm not part of whatever money-laundering plot is unloading L$s.

I don't buy L$ often but when I do, I use the lindex website for big money - over L$20k or so - and the viewer World->Buy L$ menu for smaller buys. For some reason (though not as much lately) the website seems more secure/stable than the viewer..
