Black rings around ankle/neck skin error.

I hope someone could help me out here. Recently, I purchased a Marvin the Martian avatar from Cartoon Life. When I tried to take the skin off, a ring of black remained around my avatar's ankle and neck regardless of having every Martian piece off. I tried detaching everything and removing every item of clothing, but the black still remained. I also tried to switch various skins and the black rings would appear over my skin. Is there any way that this could be fixed? I tried to contact the creater of the skin, but he's Ryan Linden and probably won't get my messages. :(

Hmmm Strange. Are you using a dual monitor? I have heard of some avatars turning black when they changed their avatars while using the Secondary monitor. I have seen another instance where pinstriping got stuck to an avatars skin after wearing a pinstripe tuxedo. The lines even went thru his face. I am not sure what happened there.Or if he even got it fixed. If using a dual monitor i would try switching monitors and redoing your avatar again .

Unfortunately, I'm not using a dual monitor. My game crashed a couple times after I loaded the avatar but even then, one would think that wouldn't attach some strange item that isn't even on my "worn" category. Color me confused.

I dont think it attached anything to you.. It is more like portions not being rendered properly. I have had the same thing on my hands before. Clearing Cache and restarting the came usualy cleared it. Not sure if you have tried but try clearing your cache in Prefrences/network/clear chache.. Then restart the game and try reloading avatar. Also try ctrl-alt-r to rebake textures and might also try changing your shape to another one and back..

SL can be a pain sometimes.. I hope you get it sorted. If none of those work i would try contacting LL maybe they have a known fix for it..

Enable the "Advanced" menu pressing Ctrl+Alt+D, then go to Advanced, Character, Rebake texture.

The good news is that the black rings are gone. The bad news is that my avatar appears to be walking four inches off of the ground David Blaine style without having the fly tool on. The pants are also not loading correctly. If I were to go to advanced, character, dump attachments, would that get rid of this ghost effect going on? I'm thinking that there was some kind of error that occurred when my game crashed since an attachment from the Martian avatar doesn't seem to want to disappear.

Keep in mind that all shoe attachments and shapes have been removed.

Bumping this back up. The rings have appeared again and rebaking textures doesn't seem to make them disappear. :(

alt-r rebakes also. do it several times, clear cache, blah blah blah. also, try going into appearance and rebaking... but don't be wearing a system skirt while doing so or you'll possibly ruin it. i dunno if that glitch was ever reparied.

I went ahead and tried clearing cache repetitively as well as going into appearance and rebaking. It's really odd because it worked yesterday. Here's what the rings look like now:

I wish there were a way to contact someone in support directly without the paid membership. I heard there were others experiencing "hovering" problems but I have yet to see this ring problem arise with anyone else.

hmmmm... did you say you already reinstalled the client? if not, it may come to that.

I installed the mandatory security update a few days ago but haven't reinstalled ever since. I'll go ahead and try that and keep my fingers crossed here.

That was quicker than anticipated. I uninstalled the SecondLife software and went ahead and redownloaded the program completely. The problem still persists. I really don't want to create a new account just to get this problem under control. :(

With the exact same black ring and band effect, I could only kick the problem by _both_ clearing the cache and deleting the SL settings files (the *.xml files that by default live in the same SecondLife folders as the chat logs, you can keep the logs if you like). Specifically, under SecondLife, delete *.xml in the folder with your username, and the user_settings folder alongside that.

You may need to rebake one more time after doing this, if the sim still has the old bugged baked version up its sleeve.

I had that one come up twice in the past year, but haven't seen it in several months, good luck and hope the same fix applies for your setup :/

I went ahead and opened up my SecondLife folder under program files and I don't see anything that has my username followed by *.xml. :/

It's not in the app folder but under your user folder. Not sure what flavor of windows that is, but for XP, look for

Documents and Settings\your username\Application Data\SecondLife\

For Vista, try

Users\your username\AppData\Roaming\SecondLife\

I deleted katharine_mcginnis' folder completely as well as user_settings and tried to sign back on. The rings are still there. Should I restore it and try it again? Also, when you had this problem, did others see it too? Whenever I log on, I ask whether or not anyone else sees the rings on my legs and the answer is yes.

You probably need to delete the entire Second Life Application Data folder, not just the subfolder for your av. You can try just deleting the Cache subfolder first if you like...that *might* work.

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

I just tried that and I'm still getting the same results. Thank you though.

Not to sound like a complete newb, but what's "the Kristen or Nicholas viewers"?

Third party patched versions of the standard SL client.

I'm grasping at straws here, but do you use an nVidia card? There have been lots of SL clothing issues with drivers earlier than the 175 series.

I'll go check that out right now. As for the card, I do. It's an 8600 but what's bizarre is that my SL sweetie still sees the black rings and he's using an ATI Radeon. I just find it weird how it's not just my computer and every person I've encountered so far has seen the rings as well.

It would be the drivers that were causing the issue, not the card itself. And other people would see it, regardless of what they were using themselves.

There's an explanation and a link to the older drivers here:
