Claire, I know people will probably disagree, but If you already have a monitor, £500 is more than enough for a pc that will run SL. I would also suggest you buy a ready built base unit as to be honest nowadays, it is nearly impossible to build the same from components plus you get the security of a warranty.

I would suggest something in the lines of the following that I picked out from ebuyer.com:

Acer T180 Athlon 64 4000+ Dual Core 250GB Hdd 1GB Ram DVD+RW MS Works Windows Vista Home Premium £299.99 quickfind code: 126116

CPU - AMD Athlon 64 4000+ Dual Core
1GB Memory
250GB
DVD-RW
Nvidia Geforce 6100
Keyboard ,mouse,Speakers
Windows Vista Home Premium

You will need to add in a graphics card as the onboard one will not do for SL. I suggest something like a 7600GT if you are not much into playing other more recent games as otherwise there might be a need to change the 250Watt power supply too for the newer 8000 series cards. The card can be ordered starting from about 40 quid. Also another 1 GB of memory will be nice which will be around 25 quid. So for a total of less than £400, you will have a unit that will play SL very well.
Just for the comparison, I self built a very similar setup except for a marginally slower processor and have had no issues running SL. The only possible concern might be Vista as I am running XP.
Hope this helps.

hehe, i'm going to copy this and print because I don't have a clue what all this is. But I'm sure I will be able to order something similar lol. Are there problems with Vista and SL then? All I know is the IT guy at work keeps saying its crap. But then he says that about most things.

It is not only possible, but is in fact piss-easy to build from the same components as the OEMs. Also, each component comes with a warranty in itself anyway. This particular argument doesn't hold any water.

My recent acquisition which is custom built and just beautiful for SL:

* Trison Core 2 Quad Q6600 CPU 2.4 GHz (overclocked, heh heh)
* 4GB DDR2 RAM 800
* Windows XP Pro OEM
* nVidia GeForce 8800GTX 768MB AMP video card
* 150GB RAPTOR X SATA I 10K RPM
* 500W Power supply

Is a very very nice machine.

Not all components are created equal. I'm a big fan of custom built machines, but I understand people might not always have access to a reputable PC shop. Failing that, a business grade PC, not a consumer grade PC. Consumer grade PCs come loaded down with extra stuff you really don't need and that just bogs a machine.

Hope that's helpful. Have fun!!!!

Yes mine is black and shiny with a button that lights up blue and loads of holes at the back.

It's never given me a moment's trouble, so I would always recommend a black and shiny one with a button that lights up blue and loads of holes at the back.

ROFL. This is exactly how I buy computers!

Mine is like Kelly's! All shiny black and full of blue lights. Does that mean we are PC triplets?

The mind boggles, with cobblers.

Q: How many IT guys does it take to change a light bulb?

A: It doesn't need changing. Just switch it off and on again.

@Sandy, I think you need to work on your material but other wise :D hehe
@Bilbo, the IT guy at work just never turns up! he gets annoyed because things that don't work for other people always work for him so he never knows what is wrong. It's always 'gimme ten mins'...

But in order to exercise the component warranty, you first have to determine which component is the problem.

My resident geek builds all our PCs, but I have had to administer sympathy and cookies at times when two components don't work with each other, or when he can't trace a problem to a particular program or component.

Being a PC builder means that you become your own IT department.

To answer the question posed by the OP, the issue is really not about brand. The issue is to buy the very best machine you can afford. By very best, I mean largest RAM, largest hard disk(s), most capable video card (NVIDIA) and fastest FSB Mobo. Do your homework - Tom's Hardware is a great place to start. :)

I'll add my 2 cents:

Processor: 2 Ghz MINIMUM, Dual Core Definitely!! AMD or Intel. Doesnt really matter.

RAM: 2 Gigabytes Minimum.

Hard Drive: If you got the $$, go for 1 Terabyte (TB)

Video Card: My recomendation- GForce 8600 minimum

Or if all else, it confuses the living crap outta ya- go Mac. Just dont whine when LL screws over the Mac user. ;)

A Note about the 8800GT: Many users are reporting problems with the drivers & not being able to access SL.

(and Fiberglass Resin, Epoxy Putty & some skills at sculpting & mold making can do wonders for your case! ;) )

I was nodding in an aproval way until I reached the last line '500watt power supply' OUCH....

I never recommend any particular system provider, because if it goes wrong, they blame you.. lol..

Whatever you buy, you can rest assure that in 18months-2 years, it will feel like a 286.

Buying from a big name is ok... but when things go wrong or need changing out of warranty, its doubtful you can just buy a 3rd party new thingi majig... you will have to buy their branded version.
For £500, you can buy quite a fair system.. go to a relatively well known box shifters website and create your own system.

1) Dual core (not currently used by SL, but worth having now) AMD are good value and equitable to Intel.
2) High range nVidia 7 series (7900GT or above) will serve you well for quite some time. SL doesn't really use the additional pipelines of the 8 series and most of the advantages of high end cards are towards DirectX 10, which SL isn't, it's OpenGL.
3) 2-3gb of fast matched pair ram (corsair are good).
4) 100+ GB SATA II HD 10,000rpm 16mb cache.
5) 600+ watt power supply (800 is better).
6) Motherboard that supports at least 4gb Ram beyond 800mhz speed. Dual SATA II ports, Maybe SLI... PCI+ and PCI16 (although in the New Year these will be superseeded).

Now the important parts... try out and use a keyboard, and a mouse (not wireless).. you will use and see those far more than the contents of the 'black box'.. Then pick a very clear and high contrast flat panel with 8ms< update speed, 1000:1 contrast ratio.. those components will serve you better and make using the PC a joy for much longer. Good quality modem/router and connection.

I have a rather odd-shaped black box, with a logo and a button. I often press the logo and, guess what, nothing happens. When I manage to press the right button and get through some very mysterious error messages ('close' or 'ignore' are my twin gods here)
I can usually launch SL and do what I want. I also have a great keyboard I've been using for three computers. The right-hand numerical keypad is useless after a spillage of kiwi and strawberry juice, but I just ignore that. The cigarette-melted ctrl key is a bit of a bummer, but I have two of them so who cares.

Karma is more important than computers:)
