It boggles the mind how much people have invested in SL: For example.....

A long time ago I just about covered my modest costs mentioned above from income earned in-world.
But......Different days now!!

And please note this: Some successful people in the SL land business never invested an actual dollar in SL. They started out by creating and selling things, then bought land with their profits. There are others who did make some kind of initial investment, but who reached a point where their businesses were self-sustaining, and profitable enough that they could buy islands with income generated in-world. I belong to the latter group; my last 3 islands were all bought with money I generated in-game, so it wouldn't hurt as badly to lose everything as if I had bought everything out-of-pocket.

Good point. There is good money to be made if you have the requisite skills (building, creating, etc.)

If I were any good at it, this is the route that I would take, even if it took quite a bit of time to build up the L$'s. Thoughk, the more I immerse myself in SL, the better I am getting. Excuse the grammar.

$20k US <snip> but if you remove SL from the mix and jsut consider it a new "toy", it's not that much.

That's more than I make in 3 years.

If you need a place to keep your money, Winter, I have a briefcase i'll gladly let you fill ;)

I fall into Wildefire's category. I paid for my first island, but the other 14 have been paid for with in game funds. Bringing more online this week, if anyone needs an affordable place to stay. :)

when i sold most of my land on yamma yamma in early december, Praetorian Industries had a 2.5K parcel there. for sale. L$50K. it had been there for sale at that amount since july of last year.

they bought it in july at auction and set up ban lines immediately. it sat like that. empty. in october it went up for sale.

it's still there for sale.

i don't understand.

I spent 72 on a premium membership, and... maybe I paid 25 USD/mo tier for a coupla months... maybe not... I don't recall. Maybe just one?

After that, I kicked in about 500 USD about a year later as 'hedge' during a time of insane growth.

I wasn't quite sure if Caledon would be long-term sustainable past four regions - there was a lot of excitement, it was early on, was it just 'hype' or something? My god, 4 regions, 800 bucks tier a month...

...well, we know how that turned out. :) I paid myself back for that hedge amount not long thereafter.

I'm one of those with "expendable income". SL is my entertainment, and since I live in the country without much entertainment around, it works. I'm spending in SL what my hubby and I easily spent driving into town and going to dinner and a movie once a week. I lease my sim, so I didn't have to pay that big chunk down, and then pay the full tier on it.

I'm running a club which I opened, being fully aware that there is no money to be made and that it's just a money pit. I get some donations (10k in February), but considering I spend 86k just on tier, it's a drop in the bucket. I have a staff to pay, people to tip, party popper to pay. *shrug* No big deal, as long as I don't exceed my budget.

Same here Honey. I have nothing else to do with my entertainment budget, might as well put it in SL,lol. I am a SAHM with two disabled children,I do not get to go out much unless it is on an errand. One month I did go way over budget with SL though.:o I am getting better now.

Oh and thank you for paying me and adding to my budget.:D

I was searching for land and noticed that Praetorian Industries has at least eight new sims in Corsica, which is probably only a drop in the bucket as to what they own. I mean if they sell all the land and make a profit okay, but jeez if SL ever goes under boy is it going to hurt. And if they don't sell the land all at once, just think of the tier fees. Just these 8 sims alone has to be what, around $20,000US.? I also happen to think they are ridiculous as far as their asking prices, but you know somebody will pay.

This leads to my next question, What do you think the repercussions would be if SL ever really did fold? Does everyone here believe that this can go on forever?

Is it me or is this just crazy.

The SL economy is growing very quickly, especially as of late (there seemed to be a slight lul in growth during Nov-Jan.) In the last few months I personally have seen growth in sales, as have my friends. Innovation drives SL, and over the past few months I've seen a lot of it in nearly every field.

Any investment/business has risk. Some are taking a gamble IMO putting a lot of money into SL when it's so unstable, yet it's the early bird who gets the worm.

Oh mannn...I just changed the quote in my sig, but I think in this case my former one bears repeating:

"....on the other hand, the early worm was eaten by the bird." :p

My current business within Second Life cost around $200 US to set up and has tier costs of around $25 US per month. In addition, I pay for premium membership but as a Second Life member that cost is broadly neutral as I receive stipend. At this level its just a hobby for me and I regard it as unlikely I will even recover tier costs let alone make a profit. But I am content with that, as other folks have said, when it gets down to the level of entertainment that’s okay.

Investing real money with Second Life, well I am not too sure. In principle maybe, BUT I have been around long enough to have some idea about what works and what does not. Here, time commitment vis-à-vis early rewards is the big issue
