Main cause of performance problems: Second Life is on the bleeding edge of what it's doing - 3D VR massively multiplayer worlds. Comes with the territory. Personally, I hate the problems, all right, but I love the experience of playing a role, no matter how small, in the bleeding edge of something bound to have a profound influence on the future, one way or another. Screw lag, under those circumstances.
The others' advice is excellent: Search is your friend. If you're interested in something, anything, it will be out there, on one of the 15,000 or so sims making up this world at the moment.
