LL just did a round of press releases in September proudly claiming over a billion-dollar economy in SL. As I read the CIA figures in Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_(nominal)), that's larger than the GNPs of 23 countries/territories. It's not surprising that SL's economy is bigger than that of the Marshall Islands; but it is a little scary that it's bigger than the BVI's (British Virgin Islands).

They tout content creation as a major driver of this commerce.

I have very little confidence in M Linden. This mostly comes from a huge lack of trust. I know where he says he is headed but I would not follow him across the street. I think I will just go that way on my own and maybe I will see him later if he gets there.

I think that is well stated. Even if they want to take SL in a direction I can agree with, I too don't trust them to get us there.

Perhaps, but I do think that they no longer care about what those oldbies want or think. They are courting a new clintele, and the rest of us will just take whatever they give us and be happy with it. I do think LL wants to disasscociate themselves from the early adopter types, knowing that many are so emotionally and financially tied to SL that they will take all the shit thrown at them and still stay on and keep paying.

I had to use a welder's mask and gloves to take quick peeps at the "Thank you LL" thread. It's a bit toxic.
However.... something that came up there is relevant to the whys and wherefores of this thread.

What came up in the thread is the theory/belief that the world is really run by shape-shifting alien reptiles -- lizards!

That has suddenly clarified something about SL.

SL and any other 3D virtual worlds that permit non-human avatars are a plot by the lizards.
The lizards can shape-shift to human form or breed with humans to make hybrids. This drains their energies and - more vitally - makes them feel 'dirty' in using a puny human form as a vehicle. They need a way of being able to appear in their natural form without causing mass-panic and riots.

We're probably all familiar with the way that SL carries over into our RL. We look at something in RL and wonder what the prim count is. We think about retexturing our RL homes. Instead of asking someone for directions to somewhere, we ask for a LM.

What SL does is to desensitise us when it comes to interacting with non-humans. That will carry over into RL as do other aspects of SL.
This is why the push is on to get the masses to sign up for virtual worlds. The day will come when the first alien lizards begin to appear on RL streets. Before that can happen, the majority of the world's population will have to be conditioned to accept them.
Instead of "ZOMG!!!! ALIENS!!! RUN/FIGHT!!", the reactions will be along the lines of "Hmmmmmmm. Interesting boots!" or at worst "Tsk! Furries again!"

This is not to say that every furry and reptile avatar in SL has a alien reptilian typist. A small number operate in strategic areas in order to engender empathy from humans. A few others are in SL purely for recreation in a environment where they can be who they really are. Most non-human avatars in SL have human typists who are at various stages of conditioning.




So.....
The push to AOL/FaceTwitter SL has nothing to do with business or profits. The lizards want it - so it's going to be made to happen.

Maybe not this November - Maybe not the November following - but some November and for all the Novembers after.

If i expressed what i really thought, I'f probably have my SL account terminated by the Lab......so i'll take the 5th amendment!

Seriously....I browsed through my group list profiles last night at random, to get to know my members better....looked at maybe 50....was not even attempting to look at this aspect, but it stuck out.....and more than half had a RL pic and RL information. Much more so than in the past. In fact, in the past, would have been rare to see that. Most would have stated RL = RL, and SL = SL, and never shall the two cross.

Looks like a trend toward people wanting to be Real, and wanting to communicate Real Stuff. Looks like a large percentage of people want that and need that. It's already here....and there has already been a shift.

I have noticed that too.....more RL pics appearing in 1st Life tab.

ObPositive: LL sold me some more 16m cut-farm parcels the other day so I could join them up around my home land; I've had good luck with their Mainland cleanup policy since they first introduced it.
