From: Dana Hickman Yes you're right, for 32bit I think it's 3.2 (something) GB exactly.. I can't remember... but I wasn't commenting on that part. It's the "17 Billion (with a B) GB" that somehow doesn't equal 8, 16, or 128 GB for 64bit maximum supported physical memory Possibly trivial, I know.. but then it probably wouldn't be to Carolyn if she opts for Home Basic 64bit, Splurges on 32GB of memory, only to find out a full 3 quarters of the brand new memory she just purchased doesn't work. Thank you for your clarification Dana - I'm not overly knowledgeable about these things but it seems to me that the general concensus for Carolyn (the OP) is that she will be fine with XP Pro or Vista, but if she choses Vista, then go for the 64 bit version. Vista 64 would also leave open the option for future memory upgrades.

I opted for Windows 7 RC 64bit. It can still be downloaded from the MS website. I was going to buy Vista 64 Premium, but instead I will save that money to buy Windows 7 64bit when it is released.

It may be worth noting that Windows 7 is just around the corner, and I have heard nothing but good about it. I haven't run the beta myself, but coworkers have. To some extent, Windows 7 is the "nice skin" on top of all the technical changes which went into Vista (which was a *massive* rewrite from the previous Windows). So while Vista64 was initially a little bumpy driver-wise, as has been mentioned, Windows 7 should build more smoothly on top of that. So one strategy, if you need the machine now, would be to simply run the cheapest OS you can get, and then upgrade later, or run the Windows 7 beta/RC, which from what I hear is quite stable and usable.
