Yes, that's a good example of where someone used a watermark to deter screen grabs. It's still susceptible to capture and even laundering, but it does at least make more work for a counterfeiter who wants to get away with things. And that's how lots of real world security works, make your stuff less attractive to steal because other people have easier pickings.

ETA: but there is a balance to strike, some things that might make an item less appealing to steal can make it less appealing to buy too. One hair maker whose stuff I used to absolutely love won't see any more business from here because the wigs were changed to no modify with those useless resize scripts that don't take different avatar shapes into account (and I can't shuffle prims to cover my avatar's human ears with the nerfed hair either). All that lost utility, and the no modify trick doesn't prevent copying at all because copying scripts are the hard way to do it.

They would probably be happy to agree with you, since OpenGL is an SGI thing and at MS they have their own workalike system. But switching over to Direct3D or whatever they call it this month, or some other graphics API, would make no difference, the textures are intercepted before they even get that far.

So, if the bot can copy another avatar, does that mean they could potentially change things in that avatar? Like wipe out their inventory or revert them to a default body and skin or whatever?

No, nothing like that. Well, you could cause self-inflicted damage, but no worse than you could accomplish with the regular LL viewer =)

Irony and idiocy can look the same, with all those letters in common, but they are very different things.
