In 1977 I turned 16.
It was the end of one life and the begining of another. It was my first real introduction to death. It was the era of the 10 dollar lid. Ford did not run for election so was out of office; the age of Nixion was officially over. _____________________

Now I've done it.
I've pasted that ABBA Dancing Queen youtube link to a distributor's purchase order return email, instead of the UPS tracking number. Okay folks I think I better pay attention to what I am doing. If I didn't work for me, I'd fire me. I hope that purchasing agent likes ABBA. She probably thinks I'm really, really strange now. Off to pay more attention to what I am doing, Des _____________________

It was the era of the 10 dollar lid. Lol, I remember my sister and her friend whispering about a 'pot party' and throwing an unmerciful fit when she wouldn't bring me. I thought it was like a Tupperware Party, and was unable to figure out why she was ready to suffocate me with a pillow the longer I moaned about it. _____________________

Well, you did mention in several threads that you were ill. Perhaps someone sent you well wishes. In that case, it would certainly be polite to read and return a personal reply. Most people here, are multi-tasking while working, just as you are.....so their time is equally valuable. You had the time to chit chat in this thread, so hopefully you took the time to reply to them personally.
You had also started a thread and asked for opinions, and if you responded to anyone in other threads, and addressed them personally, whether it be blatantly polite, or might be construed as negative....then I would assume that if "etiquette" were a concern, that it would be nice to respond to those IMs for the same reasons as above. Either someone wants to thank you or wishes to address a concern out of the thread. Any time that I've done so....whether it be a "thank you" or "your comments suck"....a friend was made. Only one time has that not been the case....so well worth the time in responding to people who took the time to contact you. |

I've been on the internet since the days of 110 and 300 baud modems, but even so, a lot of the modern forum social rules have gone right over my head. Me too, except I don't think they've gone over my head, they've just evolved in ways with which I heartily disagree. a) Is it expected that I personally contact everyone looking for me via private message, if my inbox overflowed? I don't know some of them. If it's not a friend with whom you're already in contact via PM, then no, you never owe anyone anything for an unsolicited contact. b) Does everyone look at the little PM inboxy thing each time? I am lucky to notice it maybe once in every five forum visits. If I'm happily posting away with "5 Unread" is that generally something that will cause the messager to get upset? (not the case this weekend but I have done that before more than once) Nope. c) If it overflows and I leave it that way, is it considered rude, or just a personal choice? It's your choice d) I've got PM inboxes on other forums, which I almost never check. Does everyone else keep up with all the myriad forum inboxes out there, or are all of you just as intransigent as I am? On most other forums, PM's are hardly ever justified. I turn them off when possible. Moderators can contact me via email. For others, if it's not suitable for public consumption then it's probably not suitable at all. e) There seems to be this sort of... I dunno, social network consisting as much of private messages as public forum posts around here. Which is cool, I get that, people have their friends and I think that's a very valid usage of forums. But I'm more of a forums 'write and run' kinda guy... I post in forums between doing other stuff at home, or the office. For instance now I'm writing between customer orders. Last night I was cooking seafood (while a bit sick) and you can't let fish go too short or too long, you gotta watch it. I only read 3 or 4 interesting threads, and then I gotta go do something else for 20 minutes. Does this make me seem sorta distant or detached (or clueless?) on forums somehow? Sounds pretty normal to me. f) (okay unrelated but similar) ~ I am not on Facebook. Were I to be on Facebook... I'd lose maybe 2 more hours a day to interacting socially on the internet. My email's fairly well known as it is... but I keep getting constant invites to: Facebook, LinkedIn, Plurk, Twitter, the list goes on. Now, I know one person here invited me to a forum last week and that was very nice, there was a personally written note with it and a 'hi' and all that kinda stuff. But I'm talking about the automatic invites, not the ones where someone took the time to write. Does one write a gentle "no thank you I am overwhelmed" to each automatic Facebook invite via email/SL IM/notecard/whatever, or just let it go? Sounds like spam and should be treated as such, even if non-commercial. |

Ford did run for election, but lost to Carter. I was an odd 11 year old I suppose, to know this. Hmm, I stand corrected. Ford did win the GOP nomination. It was a long time ago and I had a few of my own problems, of which the drugs were one. I should be suprised I remembered as much as I did. ![]() _____________________

Des: LinkedIn is the most antisocial social networking tool around. You can completely ignore it, it doesn't bug you, the user interface is reasonably good, it certainly doesn't suck. For example... if enough of your connection requests are rejected you don't get to make any more. Ever, as far as I can tell.
This is probably why it tends to have people who actually matter on it. _____________________

Des, you being a public figure should probably be more connected than most. I keep a Myspace page for my SL venue and a Facebook page for my avatar. My Facebook, Twitter, yahoo, plurk and blogs are all connected. But there is no tool available to connect SL to 'The Network'. Annoying as it is - my first two hours online is used to respond to everyone. I have my SL Forum settings so I get a e-mail and pop-up when I get a private message. I think you need to get that Facebook page setup, include a slurl to your SL community gateway there and encourage your residents to post. Perhaps hire a community manager to deal with it if it's too annoying to you. Technology is your friend and you have to keep up. _____________________

In 1977 I was 20. It had been 9 years since my recovery from the very nasty Hong Kong flu. Mexican dirt weed was $20 an oz; the good gold stuff was twice that. There was no internet; only ArpaNet and the emerging dreams of Stewart Brand's Whole Earthers that later became The Well. My green machine was a 1973 Ford Pinto (yes, it was green) that was not yet twisted and crumpled by the multiple traumas to come.

Okay... caught up with everybody I know except one, and will catch that person inworld (I hope).
LinkedIn... hmm. Isn't that for real people, not avatars? I'm not terribly concerned about "outing my real identity" all that much, other than I don't want to become an easy target of anonymous tards. Meh... and even if I did, I suppose the ultimate irony is that anyone looking to invite me can already find me without LinkedIn? Lias, do you really think I'm a public figure? A bartender at a modestly popular real life bar would know more people by their first names than I do, don'tcha think? With regard to hiring a community manager... well, let's just say I'm in no position to hire anybody. Maybe if I had 500 regions instead of 50ish, but certainly not where I am now. _____________________

Lias, do you really think I'm a public figure? A bartender at a modestly popular real life bar would know more people by their first names than I do, don'tcha think? What on earth makes you think that "public figures" know people by their first names? If anything, that would probably be a disqualification, judging by the RL public figures I've met. All I know is that Prok calls YOU by your first name. And that means you MUST be a public figure. ![]() _____________________

Without dwelling too much on Prok (who can't respond here) ~ Prok calls me by a few other names as well from time to time, not all complementary... if all it took was a call~out there to be a public figure, SL is rife with public figures!
As far as people sending $L periodically... does that make every merchant on the grid a public figure? I still don't think I qualify. Hypatia... is very much her own cat, and if anyone tried to tell her what to do, they would likely have about as much luck as trying to train a cat to do their will. She has estate manager powers and can do quite a bit that I can, but only for the nice and only if she feels like it. We get on well enough, but if you read too much into it you'll be rather disappointed. I doubt anyone would last long at $L 1000 a week and a place to stay. Caledon needs easily 10 to 20 hours of intense service each week, if not a lot more. Including being irrationally cussed out by people who have simply not paid, and other ridiculosities on a regular basis. _____________________

Hugs to everybody who PM'ed me this weekend and I didn't get it. i suspect most of those attempted contacts were from people who #1 couldn't reach you inworld and/or #2 found out you had been sick and knowing you weren't inworld thought to try you here. *hugs* glad you are better. and there are no PM rules. some people enable PM and keep the box full - so they'll be informed of attempted contacts but not have to deal with anyone. some just disable PM. you don't HAvE TO participate in PM's if it's burdensome. |
