Would really appreciate it if someone could explain what the new adult policy means for the non-business person, how I can still find adult content, can I have sex in my home which is on mature land, and how can I get the viewer to access adult content? Thanks.

You need the latest viewer, 1.23, I'm sure some third party viewers support it too.

You're ok in your own home, the policy is aimed at business.

When you have the latest viewer you will either need payment info on file, or to be age verified, or a premium member, or payment info used yadda yadda yadda to be able to go into preferences and select that you want to be able to search for adult content.

Yep what Ciaran says is about all you need to know. The changes are mainly affecting business (advertised adult content is being hidden) but here's a how to on the basics of verifying so you can explore the adult estates
Step one:
Visit the official website www.secondlife.com, login and click on the arrow next to "account" at the top of the page under your avatar's name. So the drop-down menu appears.
Step 2:
Click on "age verification" and fill in the details.
Step 3:
Log in world using the Secondlife program and go to EDIT (at the top of your screen) then click on "Preferences" then "General". You will see a pull down menu near the bottom, click for it to allow adult followed by hitting the "Apply" button.
Step 4:
Try searching for adult keywords - you may need to tick the 'adult' boxes on each search engine tab.

If you can visit an adult sim (try Mindshift Atoll a sim of mine) you're sorted - if not try re-starting your viewer to make sure any changes have been saved.

Now you're verified, you can enjoy as much slutty, violent, dirty, naughy, sexy content as Secondlife can offer! Woo yay go wild

Payment info on file is enough to get you into ADULT listed estates, so if you've already got that or premium membership no worries, just click to adult using the preferences in your Secondlife software.

Ok so how does one know what viewer they are using - I'm confused. LOL

Note that you do NOT have to use the Age Verification process. An alternative is to have Payment Information on File...give LL your credit card or PayPal account. You do NOT have to actually USE your payment method (by going to a Premium account, for example, or buying linden dollars).

Help/About Second Life will show you your viewer version.

If you want to stick to the Official Linden Lab viewers, you have two choices. Go to

...and either download the 1.24 viewer (the box at the top of the page) OR the Snowglobe viewer (the column on the right in the "test viewers" section) Or both...they install to different directories, so you can have them both on your computer.

Some are based on the 1.23 code, some are not, you can tell if they are if serach has checkboxes for PG. Mature, and Adult under most tabs

The Lindens seem to have engaged in a bit of woolly thinking as regarding adult content and access to adult land

1) To access adult CONTENT you must have EITHER payment info on file OR Age Verified

2) To access adult LOCATIONS you may have to have Payment Info on file AND age verification

This is because the access to content is "One of the following", whereas access to land is dictated by the parcel's access check boxes which are orgainised as "Both of the following if checked" .. NOT 'EITHER of the following'

So .. the following scenarios apply

1) You are not age verified and don't have payment info on file
- You cannot access adult content
- You cannot access adult land

2) You have payment info on file only
- You can access adult content
- You can access those parcels that have ONLY the 'Payment info on file' checkbox checked
- You CANNOT access any parcel that has the 'age verified' checkbox checked

3) You have age verification only
- You can access adult content
- You can access those parcels that have ONLY the 'age verified' checkbox checked
- You CANNOT access any parcel that has 'Payment info on file' checkbox checked

4) You have both payment info on file age and are age verified
- You can access adult content
- You can access adult parcels that have either 'age verified' checkbox checked or 'Payment info on file' checkbox checked or both

To gain access to 100% of adult parcels you MUST have both payment info on file AND age verification. The Linden statement that to access adult CONTENT you can one of these is quite frankly misleading.

But one thing you didn't mention (great post btw) is that checking the box *age verified only* is NOT required on adult rated land, and DOES NOT make you compliant with the new rules if you are on mature land. It's an extra un-necessary step that is left over from the initial run at trying to age verify people years ago.

ya it's always been in there..nothing has changed..the only reason there is a new date on the page is cause of the website being updated..

Another related question:

Land names, product names and search keywords such as 'sex beds' and 'erotic furniture' are obviously not considered to be Adult, because shops with these products still show up in the offworld and PG inworld search. I can't find which keywords are allowed and which aren't and LL won't tell.

What can be more Adult than 'sex beds' and 'erotic furniture'? I completely don't understand LL's policy.

i'm sure they will be working on the filtered words for awhile..there is such a huge range of combination's..also don't go by the search you see in sl because there are going to be some that i'm sure are still advertising adult on mature..

The keywords seems to be the biggest thing they have not been clear on and really one of the most important that they need to be clear on hehehe..

You're better off avoiding "adult" stuff as LL seems to be on the band wagon to ban it all. Zindra is a start. Reminds me of a concentration or re-education camp. Take all that you don't want or like & put it in 1 place. Slowly get rid of it. Soon we'll be given a reason it's being abandoned as well as all adult content.

lets rate everything mainland we don't want in the public eye into an adult rating .then put them on the most valued mainland in SL because it will be the land with the most freedom to do things on and see how long it takes before everyone starts to feed on it..it's gonna be an interesting year thats for sure..

I am wondering what LL's response is to very Adult behaviour in public on a sim which is totally dedicated (BDSM club) to Adult behaviour, much of it in public...

but which is rated MATURE.
