I have been using the various versions of WindLight since it more or less started and up to date the latest RC version, but todat I notice on Blogg the main viewer is now Windlight. Should I change to it? Or stay with RC? Are both at same level with changes. Love June

I wouldnt say to do it since what may work for me may not work for you. Perhaps install the new viewer in a different folder? Give it a try if problems revert back to the older one.

The latest RC has the same version number (1.19.1.4) as the new official release, as far as I can tell. I've just kept using that RC.

I've been using the various Windlight incarnations since they started, plus lately the RC when it incorporated Windlight.
This morning, I downloaded the new viewer, cranked the settings up to Ultra for everything and strolled round my land at a greased pigletesque 40fps. I am content*. *this may change if the usual routine of me spending money is scuppered by more grid trouble this evening.

The official release fixes a few more bugs than the last RC (according to the Release Notes).
It incorporates Windlight (it is basically RC 1.19.1.4, with minor tweaks).
It puts the "old" splash screen up, instead of the prettier WindLight image of the RC.
It introduces a new, annoying bug...often, when hovering, you may sink slooooowly downwards. Or maybe that's a function of the new Havok IV physics. Hard to tell, with som many changes being made at the same time.

There's a Linden comment on the announcement blog saying the last RC and the new main viewer are basically the same.

I drift down and someone mentioned that a catapult doesnt throw as far with H4

I noticed yesterday that while standing in my backyard, which gently slopes down to a dock and the water, I drift down the hill.
That has never happened before so I assume its the new Havok engine.
Not only that but my wandering manatee died. He just sank down to the bottom of the river and nothing I do will revive him. We will miss Fred dearly on Fire Island. (sniff, sniff)
The funeral is at 3pm SLT at my place, IM me inworld if you would like to pay your respects.

My media on land doesn't seem to be working with the RC. The play buttons are grayed out even though they are set in the about land window. It works in the new windlight main viewer.

It seems strange to me that people are lumping Havok 4 a server side only engine, and Windlight a client side only engines together.
We all live in a Havok 4 world now, this is not something you can control, you can't NOT upgrade to Havok 4 and I for one think it's wonderful! A great reduction in physics induced server lag.
Older viewers are still, for the time being, being supported however they have already announced that they plan to cut support for older 1.18 viewers. This makes sense, they don't want support staff bogged down with old issues that have been resolved in the 1.19 views.
Now next the are tackling server lag caused by scripts with Mono and I for one look forward to this as well. This will mean more complex scripted devices can be made, and existing ones will take less server resources.

Now let me ask a question... What do people have against Windlight? It seems to be a much faster, stable, and hell even better looking graphic system in most cases, my NVidia 7600 GT has some issues with it but I will be submitting a JIRA on that tonight. When it's not having issues it's screams along and looks wonderful doing it! Hell I run it on a completely unsupported 32MB Mobile Graphics chip on my laptop and it's faster then the pre-windlight viewer. Hell I don't even see a frame rate difference on my laptop between low and medium, so I just run my lappy on medium and turn off bump and shiny because the graphics chip does not support these!

From: Mortus Allen What do people have against Windlight? I don't know about 'people,' but I hate the way it makes avatars and numerous builds look. I don't wander around staring at the skies and water, so "Oooo, they're pretty!" does not work for me. And I sort of doubt Windlight itself has much to do with the increased stability some people are seeing. Other aspects of the client, maybe, but not Windlight. Nicholaz 18.5.3 works just fine for me.

----- Ohh and I hate the communicate window too. I really see no problem with how builds look or anything... then again, I use my own day-cycle sky settings, so my skies aren't as harsh on the avatar and architecture geometry as theirs is. I absolutely love Windlight.. used it since it was re-released in first look, and haven't gone back except to check for specific problems to see if it was consistent in both viewers. To get the most out of it, and make things not look crappy sometimes, you just have to learn to use its advantages to their fullest. (In my opinion) And..what's wrong with the commo window?

Not only that, but attributing the asset issues to either. I guess it makes sense, though, 'cuz people think of SL as one thing, not independent parts of a whole. Mari

Nicholaz 18.5.3 works just fine for me. Same here. Stability isn't my issue with The Windlights. I just can't use it to any degree thanks to my admittedly orphaned graphics card. When turned on, it does look great, even though the pre WL graphics look fine to me. But when set low enough to give me the movement I need, the graphics, notable clouds, water and terrain are awful, worse than the non WL viewer. Putting any more money into this computer is not an option for me, the machine isn't woth it. So I'll be clinging to any viewer that allows me to bypass Windlight totally, hopefully from Nicholaz, or maybe someone else. Once it is mandatory, I'll give it one more try , and if it's the same result, that's that. Plus I hate the Comm Box too. It just gets in my way.
