Hiya
What are the best software based voice changers out there? Is there a free version? Do they clog the internet connection/PC? Can you create a completely new voice, like a cartoonish and cute one? (That could be sweet). Can you still guess age, gender and accent, if the voice is heavily masked?

Let me just say, I went to the welcome area today and someone was talking like a robot, obviously using a voice morpher, so erking! However, it was the first time I heard voice chat on the grid so perhaps I may just think people yapping in general is irras. From: Monalisa Robbiani Hiya
What are the best software based voice changers out there? No idea From: someone Is there a free version? Of course you`ll be able to find something free. Will it be good? I don`t know. From: someone Do they clog the internet connection/PC? Doubt it. I`m sure some take up a good amount of RAM while running, though From: someone Can you create a completely new voice, like a cartoonish and cute one? (That could be sweet). Yes From: someone Can you still guess age,.......... No. Even without a voice changer its not a good idea to try and assume you know someones age due to their voice. From: someone .......gender and accent, if the voice is heavily masked? Your accent will still definitely be there unless you can hide the accent first yourself. As far as gender, I would not doubt someone would be able to tell if you were really male or female. Some may not be able to tell the voice is morphed, but there will be many out there who will pick up on it. I for one can always recognize a morphed voice versus a real voice.

http://www.screamingbee.com/News/UniversalVoiceChangingEngineNowAvailable6202006_34.aspxSeems to run ok, I used it and it seems not to be understandable listening to it yourself but others seem to listen to it ok, 50 odd voices, masking depends a lot too on your normal voice pitch I'm having problems getting it to work atm my sound card sems screwed on the mic side

Voice changers cannot mask your accent, unless you have trained yourself to speak with a different accent.
Voice changers can change various aspects of voice such as pitch and timbre, but for a trained ear, there are still cues which can be used to tell teh difference. With training, a person can mask these cues too.
With a voice changer, it is sometimes possibel to guess whether a voice changer is being used or not. It is not generally easy to determine the age or gender of the original voice though.
Voice changers can quite easily be used to make cartoonish voices.
ETA: with the second paragraph, I was referring specifically to differences in gender patterns of speech. Just as people from different regions have accents, there are identifiable cues for teht rained ear to determine a gender-based accent. And just to add to teh confusion, some regional dialects are distinctive for having teh gender-patterns of another region. Isn't life fun?

Sounds fun, maybe I will give it a try some day. I don't plan on hiding my voice changer, why should I? You use it on purpose to keep your anomiity, don't you? I think I would create a cartoonish voice that fits my av.

Screaming Bee offers a free test version of their MorphVox voice changer: While the free version can only change the tone pitch, the Pro version can use the voice font add-on packs to create a more realistic (?) voice. ( ). Their website also features a help page for Second Life residents: . And No, I didn't test it yet I see no reason to test voice at all. But I understand the need for a voice morph software; it's as crucial for SL as the appearance menu and should be part of the client, imho.

I think many people would use voice changers just to hide their identity, even if they are keeping the same gender. But I'd guess that if they became popular, judging by many avatar appearances, a lot of people would set voice changers to maximum parameters to give strange, funny sounding voices! I would quite like an accent changer so I can talk with a Nottingham accent in SL, m'dooks!

Voice masking should have been a feature already built in when voice was released. Add some defaults like robot, pitch and speed, and let the residents create their own voice effects and put them up for sale. Could be a new business

Go to eBay and do a search on "voice changer". I found tons and tons of hardware voicechangers there, most of which are pretty cheap too. If you must use one, you would much rather prefer to use it as hardware rather than adding to your poor computer's work load (it must run SL after all). I won't be able to hear you though, because you will already be on my mute list after the first initial bad jokes about human beings, earth and our leader.. J/K. If used with caution, a voice changer can add a lot to RP and general fun, just please don't overdo it.

I played around with the Screaming Bea one that someone else linked too, it doesn't take much CPU.

i actually believe this was the intent of LL (to stall voice until morphing tech improved). From: Monalisa Robbiani Voice masking should have been a feature already built in when voice was released. I spoke to a co-worker who knows about this and they mentioned this too. On the Screaming Bee site they really cheat with this! The "male to female" example has a starting male voice who's already making effort to copy some female characteristics, such as using pitch for emphasis, and reducing resonance. And the "female to male" example starts with a natural woman's voice, and sure enough the resulting male voice sounds decidedly odd because it's also using pitch emphasis, which most guys don't usually do.

these things always sound artificial to me. pitch shifting may sound good on a stringed instrument but it sounds awful on a human voice.

To create a cartoon effect I think speed AND pitch have to be changed. Unfortunately it works better with male voices while female voices end up sounding like a baby. Ah well... I thought about entering the dreaded voice realm with a female-2-male voice changer and see what the reactions would be...!

I had one of those voice synthesizers for my ZX Spectrum in the 80s. Can't remember who made it now but they were really popular and sounded VERY Stephen Hawking. Huge difference between voice changer and voice synthesizer. The latter doesn't require voice input at all.

IMHO Linden should implement voice changing and synthesizing as part of the av costumization process. You could then create, share, sell and buy voice effects for your own voice, and/or entire artificial voice patterns to fit to your av. This would relieve the social pressure for those unwilling to talk and at the same time draw much, much more people to use the voice feature at all.
