Getting away with slapping the guy would be good maybe.

Not so long ago a good slapping did keep me in line as a kid.
It work well because it hurt i think... It imprint a pavlovian reflex in the mind that connect misbehaving with pain. _____________________

No, but after the day I've had at work today, I'd be happy to slap one of my co-workers. Preferably into next week.

I'm sorry I would NEVER slap someone elses child.. Unless I was givin permission, and still Im not sure I would. I do believe in spankings to so..
You know being a mother when I hear someone's child crying I actually smile and sigh and remember those days. Mostly they are crying because they want somethign or are just bored while their parents being responsible strap their butts in the carriage. What I HATE is seeing little kids running around the store while their parent chit chats or just totatlly disregards their kids... But no you don't EVER hit someone elses child! Try talking to the kid, make funny faces... Consider the parent is usually just as frustraited as you are! |

I noticed her aunts name was Mathis.
Maybe Jonny is a relative and she screams like him,in that case fair play. _____________________

Depending on the situation, maybe the parent. But the kid? Off limits, period.

Reading it infuriates me. Unless the circumstance is of dire nature, the task to inculcate discipline in a child still lies with the parent(s).
The man - a stranger - who did this could cause an irreversible, psychological dent to a young mind; a child who is very much dependent on his loved ones for guidance, and not from someone who cannot control his lack of maturity. *takes a time-out to chill* |

No, I've never wanted to assault a two-year old. The man was rightly charged with a felony. What he did was vicious, counterproductive, and criminal.

why would you EVER want to strike a child? if the child's need were being met, he/she would not be crying. sheesh.True, but very simplistic. Children take a long time to learn that other people have needs too, and that their needs are not always the most urgent or important. They also have little sense of time, so find it difficult to wait a few minutes for their needs to be met. For example, a small child may be crying in the supermarket because he is tired. What should the parents do - abandon their shopping and take the child home immediately? I have never smacked my children in these circumstances, but have certainly felt like it. When I see parents in these sort of situations, I give them an empathic smile - I've been there, and know the feeling of wanting the ground to swallow you up. If you reprimand your child, you're in the wrong, and if you don't, you're in the wrong as well. You can't win. I think on the whole, we just don't like children very much, at least in the UK (can't speak for America). We are intolerant of their quite natural childish behaviour. It doesn't have to be that way, though. I just got back from Portugal, where kids are not excluded, they are out and about with their parents, in bars and restaurants, 'til late into the evening, running around outside and behaving like kids. The kids were happy, the parents were relaxed. Nobody minded. If a kid fell over and cried, it was dealt with calmly, nobody got uptight about it and the kid quickly recovered. If a child was sleepy, they were tucked up in a corner until it was time to carry them home. I have, on a very few occasions, smacked my kids when they were little. If they are determined that sticking their fingers in the socket or running into the road is the best game ever, and no amount of reasoning will get through to them, then a quick smack is an effective way of delivering a life-saving lesson. I would be furious if anybody else smacked them though. I did have reciprocal arrangements with friends, if we were all out together, that we would tell each others' kids off. They seem to pay much more attention to somebody else's mum than their own. _____________________

No, that's messed up. That would only be funny on Saturday Night Live.
And I don't believe in spanking children. My spanking hand is reserved for my girlfriends ;P _____________________

No, I never want to get away with something like that. My daughter has never been spanked in her entire laugh, yet she is lady like, She goes to a very difficult school and always brings home A's...Oops, I forgot, she was mad at herself for getting one B last semester.

I have the utmost sympathy for parents of really young children who are crying because they are really young. When I did work for Wally World a few years ago, I'd see a young kid crying and their parent is trying to handle too many things at once. I'd peek around the corner, stick out my tongue at the kid and then whisk back around the corner.
The crying usually stopped as the kid tried to figure out what the heck the crazy woman just did.... I still do it to this day, when I hear a younger kid crying. It's a great distraction, that's for sure and the kid usually forgets what they were crying about. As for my earlier comment about slapping the parents instead of the kid? That was because I saw a kid climbing on the bicycle rack yesterday, knocking down toys that were piled near it and getting into a spot the kid could get really hurt on. And the parent thought it was "cute." So, kid gets hurt, starts crying and the parent is ticked at the store for not stopping her pwecious from climbing on the thing! _____________________

I can't download what I guess is a video of a bloke slapping a little girl. That is disgusting. I was never smacked or struck in anyway when I was a kid. I was never punished or withheld from anything. I wasnt spoiled; I was just treated fairly and with respect. Parenting needs licensing.
Slap a kid and you lose your license. For ever. _____________________

Sometimes I wish I had a cone of silence for other people's children. Other adults, too.
Grabbing someone else's child and slapping them is a really good way to get your ass kicked. _____________________

I never slapped mine but they did get spankings when it was warranted. I also never told my kids to shut up. I would always say hush up.
However, I do have a problem with parents that allow their children disrespect them. I witnessed that at Wal-Mart and couldn't believe the mother and I believe the grandmother let that boy talk to them like he did. In Raudi's example of the child that knocked over the toys and the parents thought it was cute. Now if the child had hurt him/herself, not only the parents would've been ticked at the store, they would've sued the store. They would've received payment for lack of common sense for their child's safety and the consumer would've received an increase in prices to offset that payment. _____________________
