Japanese is not a race. They are people who live or were born in Japan.

Japanese is a nationality.

Trout is on a roll this week. You win this thread, too, Troutie!

Faith:

To answer your questions...
Yep, anyone can do whatever they want with their land here. The Equal Housing Opportunity Act doesn't apply to SL. If you want to be insular or racist or misogynist or just plain ornery, you can.

Why would Japanese people want to limit a sim to fellow japanese only? That's a long story, but the Japanese culture tends to be quite insular. It is very much "us" and "them". Japanese refer to non-Japanese as "gaijin", a term meaning "foreigner", but carrying quite a negative connotation. The Chinese have a similar tradition, but their term translates to "foreign devils".

Countering this, the Japanese are also an exquisitely polite people. This is due to the crowded nature of their country. There is little room and little privacy, and politeness is an essential lubricant for society. So, while a Japanese may secretly look down his nose at you and your foreign appearance and manners and dress, he will never say so to your face, or give any indication that he is not delighted with your company.

I like and admire the Japanese and their culture. It has acquired a Western veneer which tends to hide the fact that the culture and mindset are still wildly different from that of Eurpoeans and Americans. That difference can pop out and surprise you.

thank you for your full & eloquent reply :)

Hmmmz i would hate to think Sl ever being split up into race or ethnic groups......irrespective of race, creed or whatever. Were supposed to be a sharing equal community..all simply enjoying what Sl has ( or not so often ) to offer.

Foreigners are only foreigners to peeps who are not native of the country of the person they think of as foreigners.......confused yet ?? SL is a world......not a country divided by political, ethnic or borders of any type.

sure you can call the shots if you own a parcel as to who or " what" you allow on your land, and im sure such bigots exist........but for me........I just *sigh * and move on. I aint got time to waste my valuable Sl time in arguing the toss with morons.

from my prospective The far eastern residents Japanese or otherwise have some really good artists, produce some fantastic creations and in general if you can get over the language barrier have all been freindly.

My ten lindens worth.

hugs

While they may have a "Right" to say that... it may also be Abuse-Reportable as intolerance.

From: Community Standards
Intolerance
Combating intolerance is a cornerstone of Second Life's Community Standards. Actions that marginalize, belittle, or defame individuals or groups inhibit the satisfying exchange of ideas and diminish the Second Life community as whole. The use of derogatory or demeaning language or images in reference to another Resident's race, ethnicity, gender, religion, or sexual orientation is never allowed in Second Life.

I don't think so, Winter. As I read it, the restriction doesn't belittle non-Japanese or insult or demean them. It just says they can't live in that particular spot. I suppose, as a non-Japanese person, I could take offense at that ("what? I'm not good enough for them?!";) but that would be my choice.
