[2009/04/21 3:50] Briana Dawson: no thanks
[2009/04/21 3:51] JA: i was wondering if you were really a man, and now I know
This is probably the same type who, if they find out you are a women, but aren't interested in them, assume you are a lesbian. Because there couldn't POSSIBLY be any other explanation, right?

For those who decided to attack me....

LOLWUT?

Attack?

Don't sound so dramatic.

Your post a message that earned a reply. Maybe if you did not sound so self-righteous in that post about RL information you would have not mistaken the replies for being attacks.

Even without the pun, the entire SL environment is artificial and arbitrary, based on a long series of historically relevant technical and business-related reasons made over a period of years... for some people that environment includes the desktop, for others it doesn't and leaving SL and going to the desktop is a break in continuity that bothers them enough that they don't consider anything outside the SL window as part of the SL experience.
...
For you, no. For me, sometimes. For other people, it's a complete break to leave the client.

The immersive environment is yet another good point. Though it does seem funnier to suggest that one should be able to twitter from within SL to avoid having to leave the SL experience - given that the twitter itself is outside that experience.

I do think it important to understand the why. Going overboard on integration is a worrisome strategy. Remember that Mozilla started out as a complete integrated client, but it didn't really succeed until Firefox and Thunderbird were broken out separately. Even there, I still find the newsgroup/email integration in Thunderbird to be troublesome.

If it's not obvious, I oppose integration for integration's sake. Integration implies the loss of choices, or else market leverage. If SL integrates with Facebook, that means LiveJournal loses. If it integrates with both, then Wordpress users lose. Integrate with the top ten social networking sites, and the eleventh site loses.

But if you limit integration to published standards, everyone wins.

Well, personally, I don't particularly want to twitter from inside SL, I'm more into wanting to IM into SL from outside it... when I can't get in there. But twittering from inside SL isn't really a violation of SL any more than text message on my cellphone is a violation of RL. Well, OK, maybe a cellphone would have been supernatural to Pliny the Elder or Professor Krog the Caveman, but not to little old me...

Anyway, I'm more on the "standards based" side, and I don't see that as having to involve a violation of immersion.

Some people who share a lot of their RL, but not as much as others get pressured into sharing more than they want.

Slippery slope I've always said, which is pretty much in a nutshell why I share nothing at all.

Well, gender and over 18, and I'll mention national residence under duress. I'll occasionally speak on voice. Anyone trying to apply pressure/manipulation, gets my back up.

Generally speaking: If the person isn't intimate or planning to be, they have absolutely NO reason to insist on a darned thing.

Oh and ITA about pixies who apparently smoke 3 packs a day. I saw a trio of such dancing one time - and while I smiled because they were having such a good time and giggling, (apparently RL drinking, too); they all sounded like Marge's twin sisters and it was, well distracting. I ended up muting them.

Long as someone doesn't insist their way is the only way there's room for everyone, I think. I make one exception and that's come into the forum discussions - to me that's the one fixed line.

Ayesha - sorry you felt attacked but I agree w/Briana that people were responding to the tone in your earlier post denouncing anyone who doesn't share RL details. So, defensive reactions, not offensive ones per se. I also would point to your own horror story as a reason to NOT share RL details. But, you do as you wish. Others will, too. It is, after all, THEIR lives and THEIR details to impart or not to. Frankly I take ANY story with a grain of salt and go instead, by my own instincts and boundaries. But using your own experience as a reason TO give more details and fodder, while acknowledging harassment in SL is a problem, puzzles me. I'll put it that way.

I've just noticed a Linden operated Facebook group called "Second Life Shopping Group", adminned by Christopher Colosi, in the Linden network, who I take it be Colussus Linden. Just what purpose serves other to advertise xstreet I don't know. It's an open join group, I suppose there might be some reason for sellers and buyers to join.
