What if someone decided to sculpt terrain in order to build to-scale Olympus Mons or Mount Everest? How many regions would it take up? Would it be possible to use multiple regions for such a project? From how far away would you be able to see them?

There is (or was) a Linden made volcano that required four sims to make a convincing slope.
I have no idea where it is. |

Yeah, but what's the scale of Olympus Mons? Will someone do the math for me?

Any terrain over a kilometer tall isn't going to work in SL.

Malachi, are you talking about the volcano in Noyo, Palamarian, Pomponio, Albion or the Mt. G'al volcano farther northeast in Mahulu and surrounding regions? Mt. G'al is a MUCH steeper slope than the Pomponio volcano. |

This was an interesting question to me because I love mountains in SL. I have a small 6000 meter parcel that I raised a 70 meter high mountain on and cut in hiking trails. Nothing like what you are asking--I know.
Mt. Everest is about 8900 meters high. I couldn't find any precise measurement of the base--they say it's hard to measure. But from pictures, I'd eyeball it at maybe 3X the height for the base, this would be 27,000 meters along the base of one side of the mountain. That's 729 Million square meters!!! With region sizes of about 65,000 sq meters, this size mass would use 11, 124 regions for the build. Someone once write that the current total land mass of second life is about equal to the size of Thailand. So that should give you an idea of just how big this project would be--if it were even possible. Even then, the mountain would be surrounded by water, rather than it's RL neighboring Himmalayan mountains. Okay. Math is my worst subject. Anyone else want to take a crack at this and correct me? When I did the math to convert my 70 meter mountain to Everest proportions, I found the need for about 120 regions for this. I have never been able to do a mathmatical equasion twice and get the same result. LOL |

If all of SL was one big mountain, would we all have one leg shorter than the other?

"Olympus Mons: the largest mountain in the Solar System rising 24 km (78,000 ft.) above the surrounding plain. Its base is more than 500 km in diameter and is rimmed by a cliff 6 km (20,000 ft) high …."

Thailand is pretty big; all the land in second life would be just a dot compared to Thailand. _____________________

Thailand is Land area: 197,595 sq mi (511,771 sq km); total area: 198,456 sq mi (514,000 sq km)
so 514,000 sq km = 514,000,000sq m One SL Region (sim) = 65536sq m Thailand would take up 514,000,000/65536=7843.017578125 Regions (sims) Im lead to believe there are over 8000 Regions now so, yes SL is larger than Thailand. I do not know the whole area of SL including water areas. I would conclude SL is considerably larger. _____________________

You'll never manage a realistic, full-scale mountain in SL. You can't build reliably above 768 Meters altitude in SL. A single sim can't have terrain higher than 512 meters, and that is by 'tricking' the terrain height map and using a multiply layer value of 2.0, so a greyscale value of 256 would equal 512 Meters, and you'd have a vertical resolution that would snap in 2 meter increments.
Compare that paltry 512 meters altitude to the height of Mount Hood, in Oregon. A reasonably nice sized snow-capped peak, though nowhere near as big as Mt Everest, Mt Hood is 3,429 Meters tall. _____________________
Sorry, LL won't let me tell you where I sell my textures and where I offer my services as a sim builder. Ask me in-world.

I've spent days travelling through Thailand, in everything from taxis and tuk-tuks, longtail boats to jet planes, even by elephant - Thailand is a scary-huge place. *contemplates* Boggled. Just... boggled. My but-but-but-this-just-CAN'T-be-true meter is pegged on 11. _____________________

There are Clubs for this sort of thing. I think it looks really silly, but I guess some people are into it.

Why not start with Thailand? I love Thai food. Right on! Every single avi in SL is armed with torch and a pop-gun. Let's storm Thailand! _____________________
