The volume label is the name of the volume.
eg:
c:\> dir F:
Volume in drive F is Volume Label
Volume Serial Number is 1234-5678
...
However you should also be able to enter "f", because that's the drive letter.

Thanks Where would i find this info (volume label) this is the problem i'm having, someone said under properties but i don;t see it At the CMD prompt, type the command I just typed. Look at the response you get back. The volume label will be displayed in the place where the words "volume label" in brown are in my message. Just try it, you will see. _____________________

If the disk was not named it may not have a label at all. If that is the case the properties dialog will just contain an empty field where the label goes, at least with XP I believe this to be the case (I'm on Linux now and don't have access to an xp box to double check).
Edited to add: I just pulled up a DOS Prompt on my Windows 7 machine and did a dir c:, assuming your version of windows works the same way this is what you should see if your volume has no label... Volume in drive F has no label. If that is the case then I would assume that just hitting enter when the program prompts you for the label would be all that was needed. _____________________

I think what Argent typed means is to open a command prompt and type
dir f: then press enter. At the top of resulting directory there should be something like Volume in drive F is Volume Label Volume Serial Number is 1234-5678 The words "Volume Label" should be replaced with the volume name. in my case I get such things as "Local Disk" instead of "Volume Label" for C: and "has no label." for D: on my system. _____________________

If it has no label use the drive letter, like the book says.
The drive letter is "f". _____________________

Because it's a harddrive, it also has a fixed volume name that was assigned at the time of formatting (either by you or at the factory).
Easiest way to find the volume label of that drive is to open My Computer (start button ->My Computer) Any wording that appears before the ( F: ) will be the volume label. It may be a funky factory name if you didn't reformat the drive before using it, but that's ok. Type it in as you see it and remember it's case sensative. _____________________

If i remember, some good souls made an ext2 ext3 driver for windows, but you can't use it on your system drive.

If you are using XP go to Start, Run. Type in the command 'cmd' (without the quotes) and a command window will open.
If the drive you want the label for is F: then at the command prompt in the command window just type 'F:' (without the quotes) and you will now be in the F: drive. Now just type the command 'vol' (without the quotes) and the drive's name will be revealed to you. Rock |

Well, I *would* ask why a third party can't develop and implement it, _____________________

try this
Open 'my computer' Right mouse on drive F: and select rename. Enter a new drive name (keep it simple and no spaces) eg: oldfat now try again with same command you used in OP convert f: /fs:ntfs When asked for volume name, enter your new name 'oldfat' or whatever you used. |

All it's trying to do is to double-check that you're actually performing the operation on the drive you intend.
If you type the drive letter, "f", and hit return... it should work. _____________________

I think we've finally hit on a way for LL to sell SL to the business community, as a superior way to provide support for MS Windows.

I think he was saying that the forum help here was better able to help you than Microsoft's support options and joking that it might be SL's best marketing angle; since claiming to be a fully functional virtual world where "the only limit is your imagination" doesn't seem to be working ![]() _____________________

Now how many of you know how to run SL under DOS 3.0?? ![]() That's too easy. Just put the system you run SL on on the first floor, and put the DOS 3.0 system on the second floor or roof it you don't have a second floor. |

On the one hand, why isn't it easy to get answers to questions such as this directly from Microsoft? (Part of the answer is that anything Microsoft can do risks suffocating under its own weight.) On the other hand, we keep talking about LL's desire to get more business customers, when they have yet to prove any business value - but here's some clear business-related value. There's also irony, since obviously SL technology had no role in answering the question, other than providing the context to bring together this community. |
