And this is true even if you buy land on the Mainland direct from Linden Lab. Just ask all the adult content merchants and adult content users who are now facing a threat of either forced moves to a new continent, or eviction from their land, for doing activities that were perfectly legal and acceptable on Mature mainland property when they bought their land.

Most Private Island landlords would have handled the re-zoning issues FAR better than Linden Lab is doing right now.

Same could be said for the Gambling and Banking people ..

in almost 100% of cases Linden Lab would have a "reason" to kick you off your land, it may be a mistaken reason, but they do have a reason.... Private island owners dont have to have any reason at all.

Think of it this too, if your private estate owner dies in RL, as soon as his Tier runs out everything poofs... if Phillip Linden dropped dead tomorrow I think Linden lab will say "aww will miss you" and then get back to business.

I love my mainland land. I started with a small plot and have bought up land around me over time and have quite a large chunk now. In the last few months I have moved my store up to around 600m and i have left the land down below as just water. At one time I had a home there, but now have it on my sims. As a landlord, i try very hard to work with those who "buy" land from me and make everyone enjoy the experience.

Another difference between mainland and estate land is the sense of community that we have on the estate sims with rented land. While I love my mainland area, there is no connection between me and the other land owners. On my sims, in addition to the land folks purchase, there are events, community areas etc. It is quite a different feel and has very different goals than mainland. That sense of community is why i actually live on the estate land. I like to be able to run into people I know, chat with them, wander over to the beach or the mountain etc. It is a much more expansive area with much more variety than my water mainland plots.

I dont really worry about being taken advantage of etc. things in sl are very transitory...that is a fact of sl. as long as you go in with your eyes open and know the risks and advatages of each situation, then you make an informed choice that is best for you.

I live and own a shop on the mainland, in two different sims. I've never had any problems. Like everyone has said, there are issues with either renting on a private sim, or buying on the mainland. Some of us prefer one over the other (I know I do) and some of us could go either way.

I wouldn't stress out about the new adult thing from LL.

Its safer to buy on the mainland rather than a private estate.
This is because on a private estate you can be expelled without refunding your money

Technically buying land on someone elses private estate is closer to a lease than a real purchase even though many insist on calling it a purchase.

Many estate owners will of course never do that and are very reputable
Unfortionately there is no way a newbie could know the good ones from the bad ones, and linden labs doesn't get involved if it happens.

If you're up in the air you're going to miss the lapping of the waves rolling in on the beach.

You're going to have a few more control features as owner instead of renter. There are going to be some annoyances creep in as a renter, and a lack of control over those....that might irritate the heck out of you. Kind of like RL.

I'm thinking the ability to immediately ban someone from your property is a big one. The ability to terraform. The ability to change your land options, music, etc. The ability to change home/landscaping at your own whim, if they have something already in place.

The ability to tell any of your neighbors they can F Off on any given day without ramifications from a landlord monitoring and judging your behavior and every move, based on consistent complaints from neighbors with mental problems....and odds are, there will be several of those.

And just like RL....landlord can kick you out at any time with no reason.

Any decent landlord will be able to give you all the same land control features that you would get by owning through the use of a group.
Also... in RL a landlord can NOT "kick you out any time with no reason". At least not where I am from.

There are many private estates that have zero sense of community and also there are areas of the mainland where the community connection is very strong.

Hey Flack. I rent land on a very good sim in SL. I have a 6144m lot with 2800 prims. I know they have a 2048m lot giving you 937 prims for 4k per month. That works out to be less than 20 USD per month. It's a great sim and the owners are fantastic. Just as an example, I had the 2048m lot and even though I had time left on it, they let me upgrade with no problems and they rolled the money I had in rent left to the new lot.

If you want, IM me in world and I can give you the LM and name of who you should talk to. Very friendly community and a great deal. I won't move from there if someone paid me... well... depends on how much they offer ... lol
