There are big problems with a lot of UK users with the main viewer in the evenings due to isp restrictions, First Look doesn't have the problem. Why don't they have business using the client which has been publicly advertised?
Way back, there was something called "Focus Beta". recently they renamed this "First Look".. frankly I think they should rename it again to "Beta Client"
There are two versions of the client (viewer, application, program, whatever you call it). the "OFFICIAL" release, and the "we're currently testing this, if you wanna help us out, try it.. we need feedback"
Unfortunately, the "First Look" client is so prominently featured on the downloads page, it seems that most "newbies" are downloading this INSTEAD of the OFFICIAL client. With their first experiences of SL being filtered through unfinished, Beta software.
As a result, Linden Labs gets to feel good about their viewer.. "look thousands of people have downloaded this! and most are using it and not complaining"... Of course they seem to fail to compare this number against the creation dates. So there's thousands of noobs out there.. using a half working testbench client.
The problem comes.. that product developers develop for the OFFICIAL client. That's the only way to do it. The beta client changes every few days. We build, and program, using the established official standards. Using practices that have worked for months or years.. code that is well established in the LSL wiki, etc. Along comes the Beta client, and suddenly it doesn't work.
Issue is.. the noobs think they're using "the latest, best client" so when my product fails.. they come to me, complaining about the product. I find that telling people to log out, download and install the official client, and try again.. solves this "my hud doesn't work" problem 100% of the time. In this case, it's not my product that isn't working.. it's the beta software they're using.
Frankly... I really have a problem with an "Open Beta" process.. particularly in this case.. but I have MORE of a problem with the fact that the new users are being shown the beta client on their first visit to the downloads page. And the term "First Look" makes it look tempting and exciting, with new features... without mentioning to them that it is not considered "STABLE" (a term long used in the software world)
Second Life Client 1.13.3.2 OFFICIAL (stable)
Second Life Client 1.13.3.55672 BETA
While I see that they've made an slight effort to explain the situation to people on the download page.. I don't think it goes far enough, and I suspect it doesn't translate well into other languages. (a lot of my FL using noobs seem to be French or German). A lot of noobs simply don't understand that "the client" can get in the way of everyday issues like "clicking buttons on a HUD" or "interacting with a vendor". I think it should be remanded to a separate page on the website, and that the name should not sound "exciting" with a "buzzword" feel.
