Interesting article, but I had a problem paying much attention. I was too busy trying to figure out if I'm a "geek" or "socially awkward".

I am sensing a lack of passion and enthusiasm throughout SL. But this lack of enthusiasm is probably for virtual worlds in general.

Although all the numbers and fancy statistics look fine, so what do I know.

I note that yesterday we hit a new concurrency high. It's getting awfully close to the 90,000 mark now, and just a couple of months ago the grid melted down at around 70,000.

I think reports of SL's death have been greatly exaggerated.

terribly written at best...

I started reading, but lost interest when I realized that someone from a high school remedial english class must have written the article, ...not to mention the obvious biasness against SL.

I happen to agree with some of what was said in the article pertaining to the decline of SL patrons, but I just couldn't bear to read the whole thing...it was like having vomit in my eyes...not to mention the terrible picture used on the page.

Can't help being overly cynical, I went to art school, I read alot, and I have a critical mind. Just felt the need to share the criticism.'

God...that was dumb. It is obviously written in the standpoint of RL businesses trying to make money in SL. Explain to me how Toyota, T-Mobile and Coca-Cola thought they were going to make money in a virtual world?

Once you do get past deciding if you are a geek or socially awkward- you find out all the "normal" people left SL...

Wait a minute.

According to the article,

From: someone

Mr Kingdon, who took over as chief executive of Second Life last year after its creator Philip Rosedale stood down from day-to-day operations, claims the site is attracting new players at the rate of one every 10 seconds and is adamant that a “good number” of companies are still present in the game. But he refuses to state how many, claiming Second Life does not keep a record of businesses in the game.

I need to go back and look- doesn't Linden Lab reguarly report on the number of "profitable" businesses in Second Life? How do they know how many profitable businesses there are in Second Life if they don't keep a record of it?

(If someone points me to that link in which Linden Lab claims the number of profitable businesses in Second Life, I'd appreciate it. I want to save it in my Shenanigans file.)

I think I'd pretty much agree with that, based on my experience.

Was there ever any in SL to begin with?

Another doomsday article, another "ZOMG SKY IZ FALLIN!!!111!!!" I'd love to see the stats on RL businesses that are profitable in RL at the moment, let alone SL.

Well if it's Celebrity Media Venue Death Pool here, my money is on the Telegraph dying before SL does.

Just saying.

Kinda, sorta. See http://secondlife.com/statistics/economy-data.php where there's a in_world_business_profits.xml and .xls -- but as I recall, the definition of a profitable business is pretty fanciful... accounts with net positive L$ cashflow not counting tier or land fees, or something like that.

I like this part:
From: From Article
Paul Jackson, of Forrester Research, warns that if Second Life is too draconian in clamping down on its seedier side it risks alienating its current users without the guarantee of securing new followers.

M. Kingdon is an absolute idiot.

Period.

every time i see an article where someone rants about "SL is nothing but sex, that is why all the RL companies left" i can't help but wonder why anybody would want REAL LIFE companies in here.
There's not much use for a nissan altima for free that runs on a badly written freebie vehicle script. especially not compared to manji type-911 and similar.

and the ranting about the sex sounds like the fable about the fox and the sour grapes...

and for anybody who actually believes the "nothing but sex" bullshit, go watch the fizz cup this summer.

That was it. Thanks.

(Actually, I'm almost positive there was an LL blog article or something touting these numbers, but this is to what it was referring.)

Valleywag and respected in the same sentence? Oh come on!

Valley Wag, the respected Silicon Valley gossip blog, has meanwhile created a Second Life “death watch” as it believes the site is on its last legs.

Which is in and of itself, hilarious, as Valleywag is a failed technology blog that was neutered and absorbed into Gawker (now, there's a company that should be on "death watch";) last year.

For added lulz, Gawker made the Time (yeah, I know) 2009 list of Most Overrated Blogs.

From: someone
Gawker made its name by dishing dirt on high-flying Manhattan media and business titans. But the economic downturn and the near-collapse of Wall Street has made Gawker's snarky worldview seem not only cruel but pointless. Why kick someone that's already dead? All that's left for Gawker is to report on its own demise.
