How large is the "world" of SL? Does anyone know? How many islands/servers are there? I would like to get a feel for the scale of the "place" - I'm sure it's vast but does it compare with the real world for its scale?

Second Life is, technically, smaller than an atom - being comprised solely of electrons.

Second Life is, technically, smaller than an atom - being comprised solely of electrons. Technically, your head is made from electrons (and protons) and yet it's huge! |

Not sure of the number of servers but there are almost 15000 sims in sl _____________________

Technically, your head is made solely from electrons and yet it's huge! Untrue - it has quarks, protons and neutrons in it too. _____________________

Yes I know about the electrons but I'm talking from the point of view of my avatar. She sees the little whizzy things all the time... Anyhoo, 15000 sims sounds MASSIVE. Thanks! |

My mother doesn't believe in atoms. She thinks it's all a plot by the government.

Anyhoo, 15000 sims sounds MASSIVE. Thanks! This is just a little more than the area of New York City which is listed as having an area of 830 km² (322 square miles). So compared to the real world, SL still has a long way to go ![]() |

In terms of population (registered avatars) SL is not far off from NYC, but fortunately only about 0.5 % of the population is out on the streets at any one time ![]() WOW! only 0.5% of the population of NYC are out on the streets at any one time, what are the rest doing? ![]() _____________________

This is just a little more than the area of New York City which is listed as having an area of 830 km² (322 square miles). There are hundreds of independent countries that are smaller than Second Life. If you take the economy into account, the picture is a bit different. If my calculations are right, SL has the economic volume of Bangladesh - being the size of Martinique. Besides that, you cannot compare concurrency numbers with real people in real cities. Imagine real people would simple cease to exist when they sleep, work or do other things. NYC would be as empty as SL probably. |

Not only that, you have to consider Alts as one person, which means that SL is probably actually about as big as Bayonne, New Jersey. _____________________

Maybe that's why the residents are so negative? Well, *I* got a chuckle out of this anyway. |

See the economy stats, published monthly, if you want precision on this:
http://static-secondlife-com.s3.amazonaws.com/economy/stats_200712.xls As of Nov. 30th, there were roughly: 939,110,000 m2 land total (~14,330 sims), of which: 184,000,000 m2 mainland (~ 2810 sims) 755,100,000 m2 islands (~ 11,522 sims) _____________________

Per this article, SL is now at 16,000 servers and 98 terabytes of data:

A long time ago - in another avitar and another SL life, I was told that SL is the size of Manhattan. I may be wrong but I was impressed by the avitar's knowledge. I also vaguely remember an old map you could access from the main web that shewed SL. I actually have land now in equivalent of downtown Manhattan. But what size is it now? Land mass I mean - not people pop.?

What is 939,110,000 m2's ????? _____________________

I looked this one up and it seems there are about 50 countries smaller than SL.
We past up Cyprus and are right on the heels of Lebanon now. _____________________

I wonder where SL ranks economy-wise.
Hmm, is there something we can call SL's GDP? _____________________

Not only that, you have to consider Alts as one person, which means that SL is probably actually about as big as Bayonne, New Jersey. /me giggles at this, as a former (short term) resident of that crappy town. And, remembers that there was a bar on nearly every corner, similar, to SL. _____________________
