I'm just looking for general opinion here, so feel free to chime in about it and how you feel.

My question is: Would you rather have intricately designed, prim heavy, scripted items (bling or colorchanging or texture changing or skirt sitting scripted items) to wear or do you, as a consumer or creator think about the impact the item may have on the sim performance, client lag, etc? Do you not purchase or purchase items based on their supposed impact on sim performance, client lag, etc (attachments like hair, jewelry, dresses, shoes anything)

I hope this question makes sense, if not I will elaborate.

Thank you. :)

bling=evil

That said, I buy what I like, but actually use the things that don't lag my sim.

I pick choice C - I buy what i like, however, I don't wear a lot of scripted items and if I'm out shopping and I notice lag, I start removing stuff (non clothing stuff of course)

I hate bling... when I see it... I make a "judge a book by it's cover" judgement. As wrong as that may be, I do... I fully admit it

I avoid bling and color change items like they're Smallpox. Won't buy 'em. I buy flexi stuff but that's all skirts and hair, and even now I find myself mostly moving away from the mega-flex hair. If I'm going to a sim with lots of people, I'll dress down, i.e. no flex anything.

Not into bling at all. Do not use color changing at all. Rarely wear jewelry. Do want my hair to move for sure - that's very important. Rarely wear flexi clothing, not a criteria to buy at all. What I do have came for free and if I wear it, it's only because I really love the outfit for other reasons - not because of the movement.

i am interested in the sit skirt script ive seen being used and talked about and how much lag it would cause cuz it would be nice to be in a dress that sat properly or in silks that sat properly or knelt properly

other then that i try to avoid scripted items but my ao and dances that are all on one gadget

People are lucky I even bother to wear pants. I don't think I own anything with bling. I guess my ao is scripted, but I turn it off all the time if I'm actively doing something like dancing or using a piece of furniture with poses and if I thought it was contributing to lag, I'd turn it off then as well. I guess my hair probably has some extra prims, but it isn't scripted. I don't think it adds enough to lag to be a real problem.

I honestly never really thought about it. I just don't like really blingy stuff because it looks silly, but I don't care what others wear. If an area is laggy, I'll leave. If I see something I like, I'll get it and wear it regardless of whether it's prim heavy.

Oryx is very civic-minded. I'm just the opposite. I love mega-prim, mega-flex hair. I love color-change items, and items with adjustable bling, because they offer so much more flexibility.

That said, I have one pair of shoes, and some hair, that came with their own HUDs. That's just Too Much. I'll use the HUD to adust the item initially, then detach it. I mean, these shoes have adjustable everything: multiple walks, multiple walk sounds, footprints, particles, bling, color, shine...they should come with a course in Shoe Operation.

/me blinks innocently.

And of course, I'd encourage designers to use low-lag scripting techniques in all their products. We Must All Do Our Part To Conserve Processor Cycles.

ps - on the other hand, the absolute bestest shoes I own are a pair of black sculpty pumps from Tesla. They're just plain shoes...but the most beautiful, realistic shoes I've seen anywhere. So...build quality first, features second, price third.

I buy what I like and don't give it much thought. I despise bling or anything that causes particles so I don't have to worry about it too much.

Haha.... I know the feeling...

I have many sets of shoes and boots.... but the best that I wear most often are a set of close to 3 years old simple shoes....

when attachments attack...
10-10-2007 13:35
Those of us who weathered the storms of release 1.3 *know* that attachments can mean death. As a result of that trauma, I may be the only avatar left with non-prim hair.

I bought some sandals the other day and I still look at them with fear and loathing knowing that they are just waiting for an opportunity to snag on a sim boundary.

I hate bling and particle effects so they're a no-no for me. No keen at all on colour changing stuff, personally. I do tend to think about the hair and outfit I'm wearing if I'm going to busy places, so going to a music venue means low-prim hair and no flex outfits. That said, I love my ballgowns and do have some wigs that are pretty heavy on the prim and flex count, but I wear them sparingly. Don't have an AO (am I the only one?) and pretty much drop unnecessary scripted stuff if in busy places. Just my two pies worth.

I got an open sourced sit skirt script if you want to contact me inworld to test with.

Thanks so far on the responses.

I virtually never wear Bling items. There are a few things that I own which I did not realize at purchase time had bling scripts in a shoe or in a pin on the scarf. I rarely wear them, because of that.

I refrain from wearing hairstyles that have lots of twisted toruses, to avoid lagging myself and others.

I *will* wear prim-heavy avatars, like my Furry forms, but if I see that a sim is laggy, I drop to a "Low Lag Human" form that doesn't even use prim hair.

I'm not into bling at all. I find it rather excessive and tacky to my eye (but that's a very personal opinion). The same for colour change shoes which seem a bit of a gimmick. I don't own or use any of these kind of items.

Now prim skirt scripts I DO use in my own designs and also in the skirts I buy. The one I use is called Smart Skirt which according to its creator will shutdown automatically when things get laggy.

It is so much nicer to have a skirt that hangs correctly when you sit down or walk.

If you need another person to test that script, sign me up :) I saw what the 'original' cost and almost lost my skirt over it.

I always try on demo hair first, and I check its prim count, along with whether it makes me look like a doofus, before pulling the trigger. I try to keep it below 100 or so. I have a couple "beanie hair" styles for crowded situations.

That said, some things are sufficiently cool to justify the load on resources. It is, after all, a game to be enjoyed. I kind of enjoy being a good citizen, so not much existential conflict on this issue for me :D

I buy what I like. Have some sparkle type bling on a couple things and have a great deal of prim & script heavy jewelry, armor, weapons, hair, etc. My quick pal folder is me with barest necessities, which I am usually wearing. But when I get decked out, I go for broke.

That said... Multiple choice options are always good. For instance, make a packaged deal with several options.. w/wo bling (if the scripts have to be reset with every log and tp, make one without a bling script), maybe a stripped down version, along with the more prim heavy one. Include one with color change script & a few choices of preset colors with no script.

Make seperate deals of the packs and a special on them all together. See what sales. I'm thinking if your items look as good as the care I'm sensing, everything will sale. ;)

Most important, have fun!

I too am of the "I buy what I like and wear what I want" variety. Since updating from a single core, 32-bit machine to a multiple *physical* core workstation for general usage - I have yet to see any of this lag anyone speaks of. :3 Or rather, I do not see any of the issues that spurred this thread into existence that I *used* to experience on my older, weaker system. Bling, flexi-prims, particles - are all rendered client side. If they cause an issue, you need to be looking at what's under the hood of your computer. *giggle* :D

I agree with Bodie. I have a couple of friends that always, and I mean always, tell me as soon as I appear that I'm "ruthed" or short, while everyone else tells me I look normal. Pretty much, given the same group of people in my presence, the same couple of people are the first to ask me to de-rez my horse because its causing them major lag.

I've ridden my horse on a fairly busy sim with not much performance problems on my end, so...

To the original question, I don't like bling either on myself or others, but that's just me. Color-change, depends on the object. It's pretty straightforward to script a color-change object to be low- to no-lag, if you're talking strictly about allowing a person to Touch the object and change the color of it. For something to continually cycle through color changes then, yes, I don't care for anything like that.

Lately, I have been worried more about textures, but I could be worng about their impact. I was looking at a freebie hat I have and noticed it was using 512 px textures even though the hat itself is small, so I switched them out for 128px textures. The hat looks just as good but loads almost instantly now.

I would love to see vendors who offer "fast-rezzing" items that use up less of my video ram but still look good. :)

I like subtle bling and like flexi skirts & hair. I don't like the ones with too many flexi panels - I hate that supposedly soft flowing hair that drops everyone's FPS by 10 frames.

I don't own any color-changing jewelry, though. Artwork is different - I like the moving artwork.

I love mega-prim, mega-flex hair. I love color-change items, and items with adjustable bling, because they offer so much more flexibility.
