I was wondering what sort of market there is for 'collectables' in SL. I mean the sort of thing where some people just HAVE to have the full set. I can imagine some people would collect stuff like heraldic shields, promotional T shirts and then there's the classic example of the Linden bears. Collectables are unlikely ever to become valuable in SL, I assume, because they can either be copied from scratch, copybotted or the original creator could always revive an obsolete item! But they could be a steady earner, I imagine.

for it being a ton of full perm freebies, Arcadia Asylum's wide range of product comes to mind as being collectable. perhaps highly so.

I kinda consider limited edition items to be collectible items.

Is it really possible to have a limited edition in SL, though? I could sell my giant silver trophy as a limited edition of 100 and when they are all sold, offer more of them as copy/transfer freebies! I wouldn't do that, but I could

the little cottages series from coco's cottages. its a series of small prefab houses where each model is available for free for the first month, after that it costs money.

People can get pretty rabid about collecting all the 7Seas fishes. Once you've got the database that shows you everything there is to collect, it's easy to find yourself saying "one more cast" for hours on end.

I was in a clothes skin store last week that sold limited editions of items. they are all placed in bags and set out. once said bags are gone theproduct is discontinued and becomes history. I freakin LOVE this idea. I dont have to worry about seeing a million copies of me running around If I buy a certain really cool pants shirt or skin. you could tell just by looking at the display what was hot and what wasnt (assuming display setout dates were the same) I cant stress how awesome this was and i'd be willing to pay extra for this option. it puts more stress on content producers but its a great way to see whats working. btw I saw a new store not open yet called YUMMI tonight. OMG its AWESOME!!!!! look it up in a few, Um better yet. dont, its horrible stuff. hehe, go away, its my find!!!! Yummi I think its some of the best stuff i've seen in S.L. congrats!

From: Void Singer L$ 1 on xStreet (sorry that was mean, but yeah the theft is really out of hand in SL) /me grabs a gun and heads for slex.. They wouldn't DARE! /me finds nothing obvious and puts the gun down.. Yep.. Any real Starax piece except his freebies are certainly collectable. The freebies are collectable too, actually, and considerably cheaper.. Anything made by Light Waves, too.

Not that I don't think someone might be that ... tacky? yeah that's the word.

A year or so ago, I did a limited edition skin.
Each one was numbered. There are only 10 in existence.
They were my most expensive Skin, the one that I personally prefer to wear and They sold pretty damn well. I might do it again.

I build prim avatars. In special ocassions such as Halloween, Christmas, Easters, Valentine Day and other hollidays I released a limited edition robotic avatar (with different effects and modifications each time). I still do. I made this with the idea of collectables in mind starting almost two years ago so yes, there are collectables in SL. But I don't sell a limited number of copies, I sell for a limited number of days (usually a week).

Especially considering the quality of her work and that people are still finding other artifacts left behind, stashed away in the deep recesses of their inventories. (^_^) I remember rezzing her Phantom of The Ghetto organ in a sandbox once and someone commented, "This is the first time I've actually seen Arc's work in person." She is surely a missing asset to the grid. (^_^) On the other hand... I collect Mamesando avatars and ultra low pants. I kinda made it my personal mission to find the seller of the lowest rise pants on the grid without resorting to open-fly. =^-^=

From: Lexxi Gynoid Sounds interesting. How do I learn more about this activity? They are like Easter eggs. Is not a organised effort really except for places like Betacourt and the lost city there. Easter eggs are just something that various Lindens and now Moles leave when they build stuff on the mainland. Sometimes stuff is left permanently. Sometimes not. If youre curious about things that dont appear to fit with the build or seems a little odd then you find them. I first discovered this at OIP. ooo! whats that doing there. Thats odd. ooo! is a treasure. The treasure of OIP. kool !!! thx =) In itself this treasure is nothing special as an object. Is just that its called a treasure and is there. Is not hidden under anything. Is just sitting there and only the curious would give it a second thought in passing even if they noticed it. So what else is there I wondered hmmm! and then I found the once-famous pile of prims at OIP that you could mod. Paving stones and ropes and posts that apparently were left over from the build and were just hidden on the island. So I made a flintstone house out of them at OIP. Was quite bewildering for the people who saw me doing it. Specially those who checked the objects. Was quite disconcerting for them to see someone not a Linden, building a house on OIP with Linden-owned objects =) Was quite fun to live on OIP in a house I made for myself that I would break up into pieces and hide again when I wasnt there. Some other people would do the same sometimes. Was quite fun really as well to see what people could make out of such a limited range of objects and shapes. Like many things it came to an end one day and they all got locked. o well was fun living in a house I made myself at OIP for the time I was able. All locked now except for the infamous floating paving stone of OIP. Which is another story =p =) Although thats probably going to get locked to, now I have written about it here. But the Linden or Mole who gets the job of doing this, will have to find it themselves because Im not going to tell them or anyone else where it is. Is not difficult to find but you know. Their own little treasure hunt ya =p =) As for other treasures, some are part of the theme of the build and are easy to find. Others not. Like Magellan and his bear. Magellan is the Holy Grail of SL quests ya. Where ??? I think you have to find for yourself. This the mystery and fascination of fables and legends. Is not a quest otherwise. I would also suggest to any Linden or Mole reading this who does leave eggs and treasures to make them no-transfer. If people are just given these things by others then the legend of any treasure doesnt endure. And the most fabled treasures of SL are moved elsewhere from time to time so that the quest for them can begin again and the legend grows.

I have a "one of two" necklace from Miriel... She did some exclusive pieces as a prize in her treasure hunt a couple years ago. Not only is it gorgeous, but finding it was an amazing challenge too, so I value it WAY above what her similar necklaces might be valued at. Those of us lucky enough to own Last Call outfits certainly treasure them too although they aren't transferable so not "collectible" I suppose. I also made a unique outfit for an SL friend to auction, raising money in honor of a deceased SL friend. It was designed with elements and colors she loved. I have no idea if the recipient values it higher than other similar outfits? So far there is no eBay in SL though, if I could create it I would!

From: Lexxi Gynoid art, and the severed heads of zombies.
sounds like a book title... but, what do you do with the bodies? if they're stacking up, i'll take them off your hands. there must be SOMEthing i can build with them. perhaps a fence surrounding the soon to be open Pornsylvania. Vlad the ImPlayer...
