I spent some time last night helping a friend get started in SL by sitting beside her at the computer. She picked the female "nightclub" avatar to start out with. No more than two seconds after she arrived on Orientation Island, some guy came over and started trying to pick her up. He had all the best A/S/L lines: "Where r u from?" and "How old r u?" And the best one of all, "u r hawt." Never mind that there were probably at least 10 other identical avatars within a 20 meter radius. So as a first lesson, I showed my friend how to click on people and view profiles, and we found out he was over a month old. Is this common now for people create alts and linger forever in the Orientation trying to pick up newbies? And is this really the first impression LL wants people to have of SL?

Lol! So typical. Tell her to just tp out immediately and find some less newbie friendly areas to hangout in :) Places that don't have "7000" people listed as being there!

Yesterday, I was searching for some new places to dance. One place I searched for sounded really promising, a salsa club. But somehow found myself in one of those newbie areas (and believe me, I'm long out of that stage!).

I was horrified how fast those guys swarm around you, totally forgot how that goes. Took me 1/2 a minute to TP out. I was chatting with my one of my male friends at the time, telling him what was going on and laughing about it, what else could you do?

I play dumb with those simpletons. "What does Hawt mean?" "a/s/l? what does that stand for?" If they persist I tell them their Mom is calling them to come up from the basement and take out the trash.

These type of newbies serve a very useful purpose sometimes and that is giving me an outlet after a frustrating day at work. 5-10 min in one of these areas, bashing their "sure to get them" lines (or sometimes leading them on and then bashing them), can relieve stress faster than a drink or two. Then I can sit back and properly sip my drink, ready for a night of fun.
:D

I equate them to telemarketers, annoying but, someone out there must be bitting. Even the dumbest animal won't continue doing something for no reward. It must eventually work... How sad, some women must actually believe they're 'hawt'.

LOL...all you ladies have good techniques in this thread that crack me up...I have seen this so many times in SL and a few times the /b/tard was so out of line when they got turned down that I stepped in and I'll just say I'm a bipolar psychotic in RL and ex-bodygaurd in SL and leave the rest to imagination :P

...not that I'm a "playa hata" doh "LULz" (tm)

I go to Orientation Island every few weeks or so when I get real bored...Nova Albion is better for my purposes though, cause I go cause I'm bored and I want to "adopt a noob" for an hour or so...by the time I'm done with em people think they're an Alt because they look and act like they've been in-world for at least a month, lol

I dont have enough time right now or I would be a volunteer

That is a total crackup! Since I started running around with a boar's head on, at least the pickup lines are more interesting..."I love the way the Windlight sunset glints off your ivory tusks...wanna cuppa corfee?" lol. I think my favorite way of overzealous suitors was shown to me in Victoria City an age ago. Some guy (not a noob) was trying to hit on me and another viccy girl. After not taking our less than subtle hints that we weren' interested, the other girl rezzed this great teleport machine, so when he asked if we knew of anywhere we could go to be alone she says "yes, this will teleport you to my favorite place to be alone" and she set it for some 500m up. The silly chap actually used the tp! we were cracking up so badly. When he landed he called us Cheeky Monkeys, the retort almost redeemed his incredibly bad pick up lines previously.

LOL! Thats just classic...man...I'm cryin' here...I think it's possible to die laughing after all

I almost dropped the laptop on the floor

I SWEAR more people should take videos for YouTube of some of the things I hear on these boards, SL can be funnier than John Cleese on acid, and that's daily :D

I've had some rather.. persistent wannabe suiters in my time as Raudf. A simple folder slip, and a "OMG!! GIANT LIZARD!!" later.. I'm giggling lots.

Heh.

Yes. I am a mentor and I get this ALL the time on the Orientation or help islands.

In fact the 2 most common questions asked after how to change a skin are "How do I do the sex here?" and "will you be my girlfreind?"

I usually direct them to the SL Adult Entertainment Menu. Its shortcut is Ctrl+Q.

Basically those are the same guys who in college would try to date high school girls.

I'm good at dealing with chatters-up in a polite way. Doing occasional nude dance sessions at popular beach venues has provided great training in defensive diplomacy!!

Of all the dumb things LL does this is the one that surprises me the most. How many people arrive in SL and deal with idiots like this or the low level griefers that like to just push people around, etc and figure the entire world is just full of losers? My guess the number who just say "to hell with this", leave and never come back is huge. Why LL doesn't set up a more pleasant arrival for noobs I will never understand.

I can see you as an OI Casanova Brad...........

They should do something. THAT'S where I'd place some Rent a Cops if you ask me. Get some trained volunteers, give them a small stipend, free Premium, something. Give them maybe land owner tools and have someone dedicated to their AR's. Brad's right, I bet a lot of customers are chased away by these morons.

I managed, somehow, to avoid all the creepy guys at first, but then the other day it was a swarm!

This one guy, all of 1 day old, im's me with "u look like a b****, I dont got money, u wanna f***"

I was in a Newbie friendly place and told him he was in the wrong place so he comes back with "wana go someplace"

I muted him and reported him.

Who thinks that's a good pick up line? Seriously.

OK, let's think. Where is the absolute worst place we can send these mutants to? We can give them a Landmark to it, tell them it's our place and we'll send them there.

actually with the amount of drama newbies in SL collect, the Casanova's might reap their own punishment.

Maybe the simplest solution is best: Either an LM to a really remote ocean bottom, or else to one of those zombie-avatar farms where they all sort of flicker because they're all posted in the same spots and overlap?
