UK govt department leaks the personal details of 25 million citizens to.... well....who? US sub-prime morgage lenders basically borrow billions of dollars from banks all round the world to 'give away'. With RL doing such silly things, I'm not too worried about anything that might happen to meee in SL!

You can't help but wonder why some folk think that such security breaches aren't worthy cause for concern or conversation. Personally, I think the original poster has a good point. And to those that think the security scam is no big deal; it could well turn out to be one of the biggest mistakes the government has made. And let's face it, they're really good at making them - aren't they

Conifer the discs contain bank and building society details of twenty five million child benefit recipients not to mention other details such as national insurance numbers.Anyone with a criminal bent and a talent for fraud could easily make use of that information. Ironic that the government is telling us more and more to cover ourselves against crimes such as identity theft.

Why worry about LL giving out your personal details to another company that 'might' leak/lose them when your own goverment lose discs with all the personal details of everyone who has a child in the UK....including bank account details.

Too true. But I tell ya, one thing they're not going to do next, is put 'my' details onto an ID card, there's nothing so sure as that.

Why should we worry about Linden Lab's age verification contractor when it's a known fact that the contractor is in the business of selling personal information? Your personal information won't be accidentially leaked, it will be sold.
Only a total nut would freely give information to a company so they can sell it for a profit.

Ironic that the government is telling us more and more to cover ourselves against crimes such as identity theft. But there's no evidence yet that the discs have been stolen - they have gone missing. In any case most of the information on them is available elsewhere.

Was at the houses of parliament yesterday, had a little look but couldn't find them anywhere. But it's a pretty big building and everyone was busy watching the England v Croatia game.

Agreed but that information would be a prize for a criminal with the know how if it got into their hands and lets face it there are people who will make criminal use of that information. What did amaze me though was that a commons announcement was made...Alistair Darling looked ready to keel over as he read the details out. My thoughts were his head is on the chopping block or the news was released to cover something much worse Certainly it will have done the governments plan to implement id cards no good whatsoever.
